OCTOBER 4TH IN PERSONA 3 SUCKS... BUT IT'S GOOD! | (P3 10/4 ANALYSIS)

  • October 4th is easily one of the most recognizable and hard hitting dates in the entire Persona franchise, and this is no coincidence. It's an amazing moment for the story at large and it affects how the characters would act from then onward... but is it all good? No. Absolutely not. While I love this part of the narrative, there are some massive, glaring flaws that I've began to notice over time, and in this video I'd like to share them with you all.

    "Persona 3 Reload is a 2024 role-playing video game developed and published by Atlus. Reload is a remake of Persona 3 (2006), the fourth main installment of the Persona series, itself a part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. As with the original game, the protagonist is a high school student returning to his home city a decade after his parents were killed in a fatal car crash. He soon gains the potential to summon a Persona-the physical manifestation of his inner spirit, and joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.), a group of like-minded Persona users. Together, they are tasked with defeating Shadows and uncovering the mystery of the Dark Hour.A remake of Persona 3 was oft-requested by fans following the series' push towards global popularity thanks to the success of Persona 5 (2016), as was officially acknowledged by Atlus themselves. Reload began development in 2019, and was announced in June 2023. Reload faithfully remakes the main story of Persona 3, with various graphical and functional updates that bring the game in parity with the series' later installments. Shigenori Soejima oversaw overhauled art direction by Tomohiro Kumagai and updated character designs by Azusa Shimada. The music was primarily handled by Atsushi Kitajoh, with additional arrangements by Shoji Meguro, and vocal tracks performed by Azumi Takahashi and Lotus Juice.Persona 3 Reload was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 2, 2024. The game received positive reviews from critics. It sold 1 million units within its first week of release, making it Atlus' fastest-selling game."

    One more note about the movie version is the fact that Akihiko is being held back by the strength arcana while Shinji is about to be killed is a parallel to the fact that he was being held back by the adults at the orphanage while his sister was dying in the burning building. It is proof that all of his training to become stronger didn't change him at all. Strength doesn't prevent bad things from happening, it gives you the ability to push forward after bad things happen.

      If I remember right, Akihiko went to look before everyone else but didn't know where they were. Akihiko is also very much in denial about Shinjiro's state of mind. He knows that Shinjiro is taking the drugs, but he's hesitant to get too involved because he doesn't want to push Shinjiro away. If you talk to him in Tartarus, he thinks the matter is resolved just by Shinjiro rejoining SEES. So if you keep that in mind, it makes sense that he wouldn't go to the most obvious place for where they would be.

    None of these scenes deserve "fixing" they're completely fine the way they are and I'm glad they didn't change them, it highlights every single character involved flaws perfectly. People are taking the added Reload scenes too seriously. The fact of the matter is that Mitsuru up to this point in the story of the original was a very closed-off person who rarely opened up to anyone with the exception of maybe Akihiko. She was almost robotic in her lack of subtlety and regards of the feelings of others. Also just because she's a "genius" academically doesn't mean she's know it all in every other field, there's a reason why YOU the MC are the Squad Leader and not her. Mitsuru just looks at S.E.E.S as a means to an end to clear her namesake, It's one of the reasons why I prefer her to Makoto from P5, in a lot of the scenes in the OG she can be morally ambiguous with the way she acts instead of being this perfect waifu that every newcomer constantly goons over.

      It was still poorly thought out in FES and Portable too the added reload scenes didn’t change my opinion of that, only added to it, and it’s funny you say it highlights the characters flaws perfectly and then only talk about Mitsuru when there are several other things I talked about. We can agree to disagree though

      @@YandereGogeta I highlighted the Mitsuru thing because it's the only criticism of yours that has any semblance of weight to it. Everything else is semantics. Akihiko having a feeling but not being 100% sure about what was going on with Shinji and Ken makes complete sense and as for Shinji and Ken meeting up It makes sense, Ken could have left Shinji a letter or simply gave him a passing talk about meeting him there, I don't see why we NEED to see that or explain at all, not everything needs to be onscreen and it makes sense for the characters. The only other thing you pointed out was Akihiko getting there at the same time as the rest of the team. I mean......okay? Does it really change that much of anything? I guess they could've had him split up just before they enter the dorm but it's such a minor thing to make a video over, it's an over exaggeration.

    I wonder if 10/4 would be improved by just not having it be the date Shinji happened to kill Ken's mom 2 years ago. Like, just have Ken find out shinji did it and then decide to kill Shinji during the next full moon. It would make aki and mitsuru seem less irresponsible and make them just as lost as the player.
    How the movies did 10/4 was absolutely amazing. Watching Ken find out about Shinji after he idolized him for so long makes me so emotional. 😭

      I think that would’ve made it at least a decent amount more reasonable. Still a bit of an eyebrow raiser but a bit better for sure

  • @PrivatePikachu1
    @PrivatePikachu1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Here's my idea for fixing this scene, for what good that does:
    Ken is the one who hesitates on joining Shinji. Obviously, he wants revenge but he's obviously got some doubts about doing it and he dithers a bit (especially if he ditched the operation, boy is gonna feel guilty as all hell). That way Shinji's parked in one place and waiting while Ken finally musters up the energy needed to confront him.
    The operation goes as planned, but the second Akihiko and Mitsuru realize something is up, Akihiko immediately knows where Shinji and Ken are but even at his top sprinting speed he knows he likely won't get there in time. Mitsuru however, in a moment of clarity, tells him to come with her back to the dorm and tell the others to haul it to the station outskirts. Aigis specifically is told to go as fast as she can there, the others can follow.
    The reason is that Mitusuru and Akihiko go on her bike and tear it to the station as fast as they can. The rest of SEES _might_ get there first if they just book it as fast as possible but Aigis with ability to fly/use jets on her feet is actually able to make it there first, with Akihiko and Mitsuru not far behind her. All while this is happening Shinji is confronting STREGA and is trying to buy time. He knows he and Ken can't beat them but he's also realized that the others are likely on their way over. If he can just buy some time, maybe he and Ken can make it out alive.
    Then Aigis gets there, then Mitsuru and Akihiko. All bets are off and Shinji gets shot anyways. It gives Aigis her first experience with death as Shinji collapses in a bloody heap to protect Ken, while Akihiko and Mitsuru are powerless to stop Takaya before its too late. Shinji dies in Akihiko and Mitsuru's arms and that's when the others arrive, after it's all over. You still get the big emotional scene for everyone, but it actually works out a little better. Is it perfect? Nah, not really but hey it's better than nothing.
    ~Or alternatively, they could've kept Shinji alive but we can't get nice things~~

    I disagree with the statement that this is the worst written part of the narrative, that title goes to Ikutskis Sabotage some time after the 12th shadow is defeated.
    Because theres just no build up or any form of hints at foreshadowing that led up to that event. The story literally puts him in the scene suddenly and paints him as an antagonist. It couldve been written better in so many ways that wouldve actually been good, or at least seem more of a threat.
    I dont know if the P3 movies wrote it any differently, but from the 3 games perspective, its just an overdone monologue that feeds too much information to the player, and to the team as a whole to try and salvage what form of writing there was

    • @YandereGogeta
      @YandereGogeta  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @noisetank0994 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@YandereGogeta a few things I've thought of that could've made his character better, provided he still is an antagonist:
      Starting with his build up throughout the story
      •I felt like he could've alluded to helping more with the 12 shadows being defeated, like saying "Takeba (Yukari's dad) was very important to me. I want to defeat the 12 shadows in his honor, and to end the dark hour." This would then be a twist to his already current goal, to defeat the 12 shadows and end human life, to start a new (that's from what I remembered his goal being)
      As for the scene when he goes against SEES, it could've gone like this:
      •In this iteration of the game, he has stated that he can't summon a persona (the beginning of the game). What if, it could've been him leading the team on, for him to awaken to his persona right when he needed to fight SEES. It would make it so that Fuuka isn't able to identify him as a Persona user
      (This would also make it so that you as the protagonist, can fight Ikutski and Aigis. This boss battle would allow interesting mechanics, such as Aigis firing at the MC or the others, and dodge last second to free the other members one by one, and they gradually get added to you in the battle. Then the rest get freed after the fight, and the cutscene with Koromaro plays out as well as the death of Mitsuru's father
      Supposedly, it is heavily hinted that from an unused Persona 3 Battle Theme (found on the website of P3R at the time) that Ikutski WAS going to be a boss fight. (It's only speculation, but I heavily believe that this is the case)
      Lyrics discussing a backstabber, heavily links to Ikutski
      th-cam.com/video/qYdHxoxEFG4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TR1uZWpmQ0TxiyuZ
      Aside from all this, I still liked your video a lot. I wasn't aware that the P3 movie did 10/4 a lot better. I'll definitely give them a watch when I get the chance. Thank you for the vid I enjoy your content! 🤘

      @@noisetank0994I'm kinda confused you say that he helps sees fight the 12 shadows but the only way he helps is by saying it's what Takeba would've wanted that doesn't really point to him being a villian since we don't about the tape footage of Yukari's father being altered until after Itkuski's death and I think he was trying to find a way to gain the potential but was stopped by Mitsuru's father

    You have to keep in mind that Ken was left in limbo for two years as an orphan and none of the characters even bothered to check what happened. Mitsuru and Akihiko didn't intervene when Ken joined, Akihiko because he saw it as a chance to get Shinjiro to rejoin and Mitsuru because of her trust of Ikutsuki and her lack of trust in SEES and feeling guilty because her motives are ultimately selfish.
    If you talk to Akihiko in Tartarus after Shinjiro joins, he literally thinks the entire matter is resolved because Shinjiro rejoined SEES. Probably what he's thinking is that as long as Shinjiro is close, things will work out. He's shown multiple times to not know what Shinjiro is thinking at all and is also very blind to how narrow-minded he is.
    For example, he is very thrown off by the fact that Shinjiro took the drugs, but doesn't push it any further. It's a kind of thing where because the two are close, they already know what will be said and already know neither wants to hear it.
    This is something neither of them take any steps to fix until after October 4th and from my reading of it is a character flaw from them both being high schoolers. Neither Akihiko nor Mitsuru actually know how to handle any of the stuff they're going through. Just as they didn't know how to handle things when the incident first happened, they still don't know how to handle things.
    From the main character's perspective, they're older so they should know, but both of them have always deferred to the Kirijou Group to handle everything. The first person in SEES to actually question what was going on was Yukari.
    Fuuka's ability is also not infinite range. She does have telepathy, but I don't think there's a single time in the game where she used her ability and wasn't at least in the general area of the person she's talking to. For example, when the main character went to the Moonlight Bridge after the medical exam, she did not know he was with Takaya.

    Personally I’m not the biggest fan of the movies besides the 4th one but yeah it’s just better pacing to do how movie 2 does it. It just feels so awkward that Akihiko wouldn’t have thought to meet Shinji in the outskirts considering they already had a conversation there (not gonna count the linked episode though considering that was made after the story.). It also feels super awkward to have the rest of the gang show up at the dorm and then MITSURU of all characters just forgot something important and then the rest of the gang head out. I also have to ask why doesn’t anyone try a healing spell? I mean i get that dia only makes a wound stop hurting and doesn’t restore the body to how it was but an attempt would be nice.
