  • In this video I attempt to disassemble and clean a vintage Leica Summicron-R f2 50mm lens. The lens has large amounts of internal fungus and debris.

I just wanted to say how useful this was to me. My summicron belonged to my dad and I would never have dared to take it apart if not for you showing us the way! Many thanks!

I was concerned lately that the old "hot breath" method of lubricating the optical surface for cleaning was passe, or even "wrong", because none of the manufacturers recommend that practice. Instead they want to sell you some expensive concoction or impregnated tissues. A Google search recommended AGAINST this technique, but I was not convinced. Understand that I'm a Cinematographer and I'm mostly concerned with the front elements of lenses that cost as much as $40K or even $100K for zooms. I am greatly reassured by your empirical example in continuing to clean lenses with my own hot breath; I've found that it is still the best method, even for oily finger prints. FYI, I learned at the same time (early 70's) to use "nose grease" to lubricate tight lens mounts (especially CA-1 mounts on Eclair NPR's).

Just a little advice, warm water may produce balsam separation. I personally ruined a Rokkor 57 f1.4 using warm water. So just be careful.

Your breath is creating pure h20 to condensate on the lens, its fine, and it will not spread around a thin film of oil the way alcohol does.

Awesome job but you really could have gone further... e.g. if you've torn the lens down to the element group as you've done here, you may as well do a better job on the really cleansing them. For fungus like that my best results come from a dip hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes. I then wash them very gently with warm tap water, gently/lightly rubbing with my fingers using a drop of dish soap. If the lens is very very bad, I've sometimes resorted to a bit of naphtha (lighter fluid) but *only* if the fungus is stubborn (it usually isn't) and/or if there's a large amount of oil/grease haze present. Isopropyl will work to a lesser degree but is safer overall. And isopropyl is what I finish with to remove all residues, handling only with a fresh microfiber when reassembling (i'll often wrap each element in its own microfiber cloth and set them like that on the work bench until i'm ready for them - keeping dust and fingerprints off, but still easy to pick up and move).
All that to say - you don't want to go in again, and if you're just wiping the elements down you're bound to miss spots that will collect more dust quickly as time goes on and then you'll be disappointed if you have to tear it all open again. Which I say from experience. :D
Nonetheless still a fantastic job. And it does look leagues better than when you began... though... how could it not? Hahaha
    Cheers

Just small suggestion. you can use some rubber ring to release the ring elements instead of using plastic fuse coil thing

luckily leica got rid of those retaining rings in their modern design lenses. they now use screws mostly. also alcohol affects lens coating so the use of a breath is the best idea

Hi! Thanks excellent information, just one doubt: how exactly do you remove the front ring the cosmetic one, you mentioned that with tweezers but I’m stuck in this point, in all mi Leica lenses this part usually come of with my rubber tool and turning the thread or with a small screw under it please help! And thanks!

Hey it’s usually glued on, so you need to be very carful to remove it, you could try using a hair dryer to melt the glue or some type of alcohol

After popping off the label ring & unscrewing the tiny almost-hidden screw, I can't get past unscrewing the front shroud
I've spent hours trying to unscrew it... even purchased a proper rubber tool and still can't loosen it
    Anyone have any tips?

Amazing work! Thanks for sharing. Any suggestions for a sticky focusing ring?

    • @therealchickentender
      @therealchickentender 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That usually involved cleaning the old grease out of the focusing helicoid and regreasing.... Which is a whole other (pain in the butt) can of worms in my opinion.

so at 6:25 this normally isn't supposed to happen while taking off the rear element? About to do some of mine and don't know whether to expect it to do this or not lol

Zeiss liquid ( optical shops) soak for a while and then wipe, best of all.

Try lighter fluid instead of isopropyl alcohol. Also, try soaking the lens in lighter fluid before wiping.
