    The comparison with the voigtlander f2 would be interesting. It's a fraction of the price and it checks a lot of boxes: aperture, size, build, price..

    I totally understand the rationale for going with with Summicron. Camera hardware all involves compromises, and in this case the compromise is price. You give up more cash but in return you get a lens you could use the rest of your life and will likely hold most of it's resale value. I would like to see a shoot-out between the Summicron, the Voigtlander and the 7Artisans. 👍

      Yes, that were exactly my thoughts. 👌 I'll try to get my hands on the Ultron when I am back home.

    I've tried the voigtlander 28 f2 and loved it but I wanted a more shallow depth of field. The 7 artisans 28 1.4 is awesome! From what I see it's sharp enough in the center but I don't like the size and weight. I only use it when I know I'll be doing portraits with my friends. Otherwise the voigtlander 35 1.4 is stuck to my m240.

    The summicron is a very nice lens. I've got the ricoh gr 28mm 2.8 ltm on my mp. This is a tiny little lens produce by Schneider kreuznach in the mid 90's. On Film it renders so nice. That's my go to lens. Keep up your good work.

    I use to have the 7ARTISANS 28/1.4 it’s optically good but as you mentioned it’s too big and heavy. Then I bought the Elmarit version 2. It’s lovely but also too big for my taste. In the end I sold this too and bought a used Elmarit ASPH. Nice and small. For M4/3 shooters I can highly recommend the Panasonic Leica 15mm. Great video as always!

    I have the 28mm 2.8 M-Rokkor. It is much cheaper than the Leica but it's hard to find one that doesn't have issues with the coatings. The focusing tab doesn't have an indentation either so it might be harder to use compared to a traditional Leica tab.

  • @wilsonlaidlaw
    @wilsonlaidlaw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Be very careful how firmly you screw on that lens hood. The latest version shares a weakness with the previous version in that the front section of the lens is only secured from unscrewing by three tiny grub screws. These are made of quite soft steel and tend to work loose. Frequent retightening of these soft screws will quickly damage their slots. It is disappointing that Leica did not cure this issue by using larger diameter hex socket grub screws in place of the tiny slotted ones. My previous version 28 ASPH Summicron is going to have to go away to have damaged screws extracted, as the front section of the lens is now slightly loose and the screws can no longer be tightened.

    I have the Zeiss 28mm f2.8 and am very happy with it on my Leica M240 and M8. I am very interested in the Voigtlander 28mm f2. It would be great if you could do a review and comparison with the Leica 28mm f2. Many Thanks again.

    • @ZachBie
      @ZachBie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      cfagil I’ll second the Zeiss f/2.8.
      I have one and the two photos in my office are taken with this lens. It has a good look.
      I do find that this lens is best paired with the Zeiss 50mm f/1.5. I have noticed that the Zeiss 50mm f/2 is a bit sharper and has a different look that doesn’t quite match the 28mm look as well. They also take the same filter size.
      If people need ultimate resolution, the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 is a sharper (and smaller lens). And it better matches with the look of the 50mm f/2.

    • @zambam3
      @zambam3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I had a few questions about the Zeiss lenses. I have an M8. Do the Zeiss lenses have a different filter size? Do they have the 6 bit coding and is this important? I am new to this stuff. Cheers, Rob.

    • @ZachBie
      @ZachBie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      zambam3 Zeiss lenses do not have 6-bit coding as they never made a digital camera and their film camera wouldn’t need that information. Also I think that it might be a Leica patent. With Leica cameras it will “read” the code and know what lens is being used and I believe that it will then also apply some software to apply a lens profile for each lens. I don’t know if this matters to you or not.
      The current lenses have generally 43mm or 46mm filters, but I think the 35mm f/1.4 is maybe a 52mm filter.
      I shoot film cameras and have an M3, M4, and M6.

    • @cfagil
      @cfagil 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zambam3 Zeiss lenses' filter sizes are:
      46mm for 28mm f2.8 and 35mm f2; 43mm for 21mm f2.8. Zeiss lenses do not have the 6 bit coding. It is not important since the 6 bit coding does not tell you much anywhere. It tells your post processing software (e.g. lightroom) what lens you used for a particular photo. It has nothing to do with frame line selection at all.

    • @cfagil

    I find the 28mm focal length to be a very strong lens and I own a few. I think this is the widest lens that I would suggest for most shooters as anything wider starts to get pretty tricky to use and make strong compositions.
    I really wanted the 28mm Summicron, but ended up with the 28mm f/2.8 Zeiss ZM. I love that lens a lot and the look of the images that it gives. But it is not like the Leica. However, it was $700 and I am more comfortable using this more “affordable” option.
    I think for many people, 35mm and 50mm lenses are easier to use for street and people photography. The 28mm is wide and is a harder lens to master because you can get more distracting elements into the frame.
    I traveled to S.E. Asia for a month and took a 28mm and 58mm two-lens kit which was just about perfect for my needs. Landscapes, portraits, street, etc.

    I own the Voigtlander 28 f2 m-mount, to share some experience, its extremely sharp, corner to corner, like absurdly sharp wide open, shaper than my 35 summicron asph in the corners, the distortion is minimal, I haven't shot at a brick wall but its pretty unnoticible in 28mm standards. Two issues of the lens, first is that the actual transmission is lower, wide open side by side with my 35 summicron its about 1/3 to 1/2 stops darker, which is a problem for me as I shoot lots of film at night and it was the reason I went for the f2, the 35 summicrion is not the brightest f2 to start with, and the ultron is darker. Secondly, not much of an issue but its considerably bigger than the leica 28 summicron, consistent with other lens, all other brands compared to Leica is always, worst quality if same size, and bigger size if similar quality, its takes 46mm filters and much longer, the size profile is very similar to a leica 50 summilux, for reference.

    *Good video:* The Leica 28 mm Summicron is indeed an absolute beauty! I would like to see a video on the Voigtländer 28 mm Ultron. If you are looking for something much cheaper, but still good, Zenography recently posted an interesting review of four inexpensive 28 mm lenses th-cam.com/video/L3eDidMYJqo/w-d-xo.html

    Auch wenn ich selber mal kurzzeitig eine Leica (M4-P) hatte, aber die verkauft zu haben bedauer ich gar nicht. Dafür aber keine Zorki 4K mehr zu haben (war/ist ne tolle Kamera, der ehemaligen Sowietunion, die echt Spaß gemacht hatte zu nutzen)...
    Worauf ich hinaus will: Bei aller Qualität zu Leica Produkten, aber ich persönlich empfinde die Preispolitik als kackendreist (man verzeihe den verbalen Durchfall)! Die Produkte stehen in keiner Relation zu den unverschämten Preisen, die keineswegs besser (oder schlechter) sind als die, anderer Kamerahersteller. Das kann ich mir einfach nicht vorstellen! :/
    Ich mein, 6.500 Euro in etwa für ein 28mm f1.4 Objektiv oder eben 4.000 Euro für das 28er Summicron? Hallelujah! Und dann auch mehrere tausend Euro für deren Kameras, die denen von Sony, Fuji und co sicherlich nicht überlegen sind? Ich weiß ja nicht. Designtechnisch sind Leica-Produkte schon schön anzusehen, keine Frage, aber wie gesagt: Rechtfertig das den Preis? Ich hab einfach so viele Bedenken bei dem Thema, dass ich da jedes mal Bauchschmerzen bekomme.

      Andy, du scheinst dich persönlich angegriffen zu fühlen. Ein Lambo kostet auch viel mehr und aufregen tut sich darüber auch niemand, bei Leica sieht das anders aus. Bei Leica zahlt neben dem "made in Germany" auch für die Infrastruktur mit. Leica hat eigene Läden, die auch oft noch Galerien beinhalten usw., das ist halt der Luxus den man mitbezahlen muss. Gegenüber anderen Herstellern hat man auch gleichsam eine Preisstabilität, die man sonst fast vergeblich sucht. Und dann nimm mal z.B. ne Sony A7rIV in die Hand und vergleiche diese mit einer Leica SL2 und da wirst du haptisch schon einen sehr großen Unterschied feststellen. Immerhin hat man Option und für so ziemlich jedes Budget findet sich was passendes. 👍

      @@therealsirrobin Ach wo, alles cool, angegriffen fühl ich mich nicht und du dich bitte auch nicht! Ich stelle nur den Sinn des ganzen in Frage, ob das denn wirklich sein muss. Klar hatte ich mal über einen Freund ne Leica SL in der Hand, frage mich aber auch hier, warum das jetzt 6.000€ wert ist. Vielleicht bin ich (kindlich) naiv, dass ich den Wert nicht verstehen kann (oder will?), aber dieser horrende Preis führt eben auch dazu, dass sich manche (nicht alle) über den Preis und nicht die Eigenschaft einer Leica definieren. Genauso Frage ich mich ob n Lamborghini sein muss oder n Mini nicht auch seine Sache tut.^^ Wie gesagt: ich persönlich finde nicht, dass diese Firma Sachen besser oder schlechter macht (zumal es eh auf den Fotografen ankommt), aber der Preis lässt einen glauben, dass sie eben etwas viel besseres ist als eine Fuji, Sony, Nikon etc.
      Und wie auch gesagt: nimm das nicht persönlich! Ich denke nur vieeeel und oft über (unnötige?) Sachen nach und wäre ich so auf Krawall gebürstet würde ich deine Videos auch gar nicht schauen. 😅

      ich habe seit kurzem das Summicron 28, schon seit 3 Jahren das apo Summicron 50 und dennoch stimme ich dir völlig zu. Die Sinnfrage so viel Geld zu versenken, ist sehr wohl relevant und sollte heut zutage mehr denn je gestellt werden. Ich kann akzeptieren, dass Leica einen hohen Fertigungsstandard und nur eine geringe Stückzahl produziert, dennoch kann das die Preise nur zum Teil erklären. Besonders auffällig ist die Diskrepanz zwischen den eigenen Produkten. Eine SL2 ist deutlich billiger als eine M10R, bei der Q2 bekomme ich für einen geringen Preis sogar noch ein gutes Objektiv dazu. Es ist offensichtlich, dass der momentane Run auf die M den Preis beeinflusst. Einen Grund für eine solche Investitionen möchte ich dennoch nennen, und zwar die Wertstabilität. Mein apo Summicron 50 ist gebraucht kaum unter 5000€ zu bekommen, bei den Kameras ist ein gleicher Trend zu beobachten. Eine Geldvernichtung ist Leica eben doch nicht, arrogant sind sie aber schon.

    You mention Garry Winogrand, regarded as one of the greats, and then proceed to show your pictures so the audience slip the notoriety of the former into the appearence of the later. It's grossly manipulative and dishonest.
