I’m one of those sewists who will make or buy a pattern then make 4 or 5 with slight detail variations. No one ever guesses because if I change the sleeve length or add a cuff, a shirt changes. Pants, I love getting creative with hems and outer seams. Sewing is fun, and your videos just keep me wanting 10 more hours in each day.

I am with you on this one 100%, will done! - other people will never know it is the same pattern and for you it is money saved, time saved and no guessing game if it will fit like you want since this is already a tried pattern!

PERFECT Alisa, you don't need to buy a pattern every time if you have a good base to start from
eg. I have a skirt pattern I purchased back in 1982 and still going strong as a base pattern for so many other skirts

It took me a bit of experimenting to get a kimono sleeve top to look good, but once I did, l made quite a few of them in knit fabrics. I lengthened the sleeve and added some wide bands to the sleeves and they look great!!

I prefer high necklines as well. The top your mom gave you is so pretty. Reminds me of clothing from long ago when they took the time to do beautiful embroidery on it. My grandmother had gowns that were just exquisite.

I really enjoyed this video. I love that you can use the same pattern for different tops and just make a minor adjustments.

My exact method of sewing a wardrobe. Plus, I like to take a pattern for a cardi type jacket or top and use the same fabric as a top for a nice, pulled-together look.

I recently watched a video on how to draft a cowl/draped neck (or back) top and I'm planning on hacking my Kristen Kimono Tee pattern for that with long sleeves (in knit fabric). I'm hoping I can make something that I can wear with the the cowl either front or back depending on how I want to style it. I only have 7 or 8 patterns that I use and hack so many different ways because I'd rather spend my sewing budget on fabric than patterns. Not that I don't covet a huge pattern library, but a budget is a budget for a reason lol. My next completely self drafted project will be your raglan sleeve top, I'm excited to learn a new sleeve option! Thank you for all your hard work and inspiration! ❤

OMG thank you thank you thank you so much!!!!! This was inspiring. I am going to do this! I just wish I had the courage to post a video about it though lol! You are so right about how the fabric makes the tops

Yes!! You can also attach a simple gathered skirt, maybe while also making the top a little longer or shorter. Or just extent the top to dress length for a shift dress. Let the fabric do the talking!

I keep trying complicated top patterns and they have yet to come out well. I need to try this one next.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity

Complicated stuff - from the store bought pattern or self drafted, needs adjustments almost always to fit perfectly not only to the body, to your design idea but also to the fabric. I do find that in anything we do, starting with simple and practicing on less complicated things builds up confidence for the next steps.

I gave up sewing some decades ago. Now retired and rethinking my hobbies. I always try to find cuts that fit well and feel good on then I buy or make multiple colors, fabrics, patterns. Why not?

Do you have a tutorial or know how I can self draft the pattern and how do I work out amount of fabric to buy?

Off topic, but I'm hoping to get some input. I purchased some kids type fabrics to make some tops to donate, but I have no idea what age group they are intended for. I have rainbows, panda bears, flamingos, and unicorns to name a few. Can anyone help me figure out what age/size these are appropriate for? Thanks much!!

Hi Alisa!! Love your tops.. I’m one that if I like a pattern, I will make it multiple times but make changes to it.. Most times nobody will guess you modified a pattern….
