Can't believe this Jam is now 27 years old. I've been listening to it on a number of my chilled days and it never fails to make the day a whole lot better!
Check out ( or listen again to) Do What You Like he did with Blind Faith in the 60's he was getting his taste of free form fusion back then bc that tune had a flavor of Brubeck Take Five.
My dad was a Sax player, so thank him I started listening to this kind of music, Sanborn was his favourite sax player, and now he's mine. I love music of several genres, but this song represents my dad, and I listen to it often in the night...bye daddy! (Thank you Marcus, I'm a bass player now!)
im a regular visitor here never tire of the seamless way they interact just musical heaven and thankyou Dave Sanborn for your playing over the years and very much RIP
Clapton and Marcus Miller have a fantastic musical chemistry, and the fact that it's worth noting amongst two of the best ensemble players in music history makes that even cooler.
What makes them so unique is that while there is such cohesion between them while playing together yet all of them have very distinct and recognizable sound. You can tell each an every one of them from other musicians playing their respective instruments.
That rhythmic section, that one there... it's like having Zeus and Apollo playin for you. And as far as David; have a good journey to eternity maestro!
On the many Cream bootlegs, Clapton duets with Baker and holds fluidity and time tightly with Ginger’s challenging changes with the amps blasting.....back when he was was 22. EC is the most imitated player in history of recorded music.... more than Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, t bone walker....more than even his influences. Hendrix and he invented the modern language. So to the music school geeks out there who hate on him, guaranty your favorite guitarist learned to play slowing down his records and trying to copy his game.
Damn i remember watching the DVD of this. I can't believe that 22 plus years has gone by since this show. Wow and it still sounds so good and fresh. Perfect for quarantine entertainment
Love Clapton such a feel phrasing everything like some of the jazzy links in hear love that tone great musicians as well with him on a another level what to pick my guitar up now 🤩🤩🤩
Clapton is a solid rhythm player, for those who may miss it. Ginger Baker stated that Clapton had the gift of time, which is one of the reasons Cream worked so well, being that Jack and Ginger were jazz guys ;-)
Clapton knows these guys. He worked with Sanborn on the 'Lethal Weapon' movie and Steve Gadd has become one of his closest friends. I think Clapton enjoys these kinds of jams because he doesn't have to be HIM. He can just be a musician stretching out a bit - free from the "hits" and the regular expectations.
stevedrums agree but he's also smart - he only plays with quality musicians. At one stage his regular band were Nathan East Greg Philiganes Steve Gadd and Billy Preston ffs ! All journeyman legends. Another year he's in stage with George Harrison and Bob Dylan. Another B B King Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Clapton is GOD indeed.
You can see Clapton really enjoying the set, which is quite different from his career. His blues-oriented solo adds a unique flavor to the jazz/funk tune and it works well.
He's NOT only the guy the crowd came to hear. To call Miller, Gadd or Sanborn "superb musicians" seems a little bit belittling the place they occupy in music. My ignorance makes that I didn't hear of Joe Sample before, but he has clearly his place amongst those GIANTS. I think the was excited about hearing how all of them would play together ! Wow!!
I am getting sick and tired of people always bitching about Clapton only using the pentatonic scale. So what??? He does at times wander outside the this scale!! An octave has as far as I now 12 notes (including the half notes or flats/sharps) and every scale is using these notes. So how can one scale be more difficult or complex than another? It is just 12 bloody notes. Everyone can learn these scales, dorian, pentatonic, phrygian, vegetarian or whatever they are called. It is how you use them that matters. Clapton is using the pentatonic scale to the max. Maybe his focus is a bit narrow, but hey, he is a BLUES GUITARIST!! Other players use other scales. It is not more or less difficult, it is just a matter of personal taste. So stop calling Clapton a bad guitarist, he just has his style, Satana, Vai, Mclaughlin have their style, each to his own. They are all fantastic players in their own right!! Clapton was a pioneer, the first rock guitar hero in Europe!! So stop complaining and enjoy the music whether it is Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Di Meola, John Williams etc!!!
sometimes a bluesy or funk solo over jazz chords can be way better than complex jazz solo's. Anyway in this track (which isn't really that jazzy), all players played great
I think the description given is spot on! I lost interest in Clapton long ago. His pairings with Santana were, IMO, quite catastrophic. He fairs much better here but as described, the program was tailored for him which places great limitations on the other legends.
Can't believe this Jam is now 27 years old. I've been listening to it on a number of my chilled days and it never fails to make the day a whole lot better!
The dream team . Rest in peace David SANBORN
Da real legends 😀. Miller's solo with Steve gadd reminded me when I youst to play drums with my father on bass when I was just 9 years old.
Just incredible. Nobody is trying to be king of the stage. They are all kings of the stage.
You nailed it . True musicians / big ears/ no ego
Eric Clapton doin' jazz. Oh man...Mr. Slow Hand ♥️
Check out ( or listen again to) Do What You Like he did with Blind Faith in the 60's he was getting his taste of free form fusion back then bc that tune had a flavor of Brubeck Take Five.
I come back here a lot. Never disappoints.
me too, its just too good.
Les Héritiers de la Stax Records
This is literally the best jam session I have ever seen.
Yeah, just replace clapton and it would be perfect.
@@gunthervonschneider1380 There were other songs & I think they did several concerts together. Did you not like any of them?
What an era,for smooth jazz.
Can't spell crap without rap.
I had a Friend that introduce me to Jazz and because of my name he intruduced me to Joe Sample... THANK YOU TINGA AND MAY YOU REAT IN POWER
My dad was a Sax player, so thank him I started listening to this kind of music, Sanborn was his favourite sax player, and now he's mine. I love music of several genres, but this song represents my dad, and I listen to it often in the night...bye daddy!

Mine also
That's why I love Eric Clapton and always will. He will play anything and there's nothing musically that man couldn't do.
Synergy of musicians inspiring each other
I had never seen Clapton doing Smooth Jazz... This is friggin' over the top!
ginger baker claimed cream was a jazz band so eric is right at home
This isn't smooth jazz
He is playing the same blues licks that he plays in every other song of his. Smooth jazz, wtf?
Only using pentatonic scales.
@@faggotsmoker9588 Yes great blues licks, but thats all. No jazz scales.
Now that's a SUPERGROUP!
Joe Sampler! RIP to this maestro!
The communication between soloist and accompanists is beautiful!
Marcus Miller taught them what bass can do!!!

Clapton and Marcus Miller have a fantastic musical chemistry, and the fact that it's worth noting amongst two of the best ensemble players in music history makes that even cooler.
Marcus sound during Steve solo is just wonderfull. Great vibrations and groove.
This is what good music is all about! So good, I can listen to it every day.
This was killer! I’ve listened to it so many times.Everyone just playing their hearts out!!!
Any tune David touches is mesmerizing 😊
Great Spirit of the Seventies in reliable hands !!!!!!
What makes them so unique is that while there is such cohesion between them while playing together yet all of them have very distinct and recognizable sound. You can tell each an every one of them from other musicians playing their respective instruments.

Ouais ! Une magnifique brochette de stars du jazz fusion. Bravo les gars !!

Very refreshing to hear Eric Clapton play in this kind of setting! Simple and effective.
effective is a typical men's perception (IMO)
He's done it many times before both at Montreux and elsewhere. Are you just discovering this now?
Not sure what to write , I change my opinion on who’s the bomb on every solo but the Bass got to me
MARCUS MILLER!!!! is amazing
Marcus! The Doctor is in...

GerMart ‘other great players’ You are joking...right? Clapton? Seriously? Maybe you are not a musician.
Exactly--You Can't BE A MUSICIAN [and] Not Know The Legends [They ALL Started Out About The Same Era]
Plus he gets to just be a guitar player.
Incredible. What a line up!
When you search perfection on internet this video appears. Just fucking amazing.

Some people may not know this, but Clapton is a Great rythm player, and it shows here, also his sounds is very good here. much appreciated upload :-)
i was thinking the same: what fantastic rythms Eric plays here!!!!!
His playing rhythm on further down the road last waltz is a great example
Yeah, a rythm player but not a melodic player at all, can hear that.

Gotta love Joe Sample.
