Norfolk Southern Unveils New Locomotive in Celebration of GoRail's Tenth Anniversary

  • March 12, 2014 -- GoRail and Norfolk Southern announced the unveiling of its one-of-a-kind GoRail locomotive today to commemorate the 10th anniversary of GoRail, a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to educating the public about the benefits of moving more freight by rail. Founded in 2004, GoRail mobilizes support for policies that would lead to more freight moving by rail and opposition to policies that would limit the freight railroads' ability to meet growing freight demand. The GoRail locomotive will enter into regular freight service on Norfolk Southern's system.
    "We are honored that Norfolk Southern has commissioned this special GoRail locomotive and excited for its debut," said GoRail President Russell McGurk. "We believe it will help GoRail spread awareness about the many public benefits of rail, including more jobs, improved safety, less pollution and less energy consumption. When the public understands that America's privately owned freight railroads invest billions of dollars each year in the nation's rail network, so taxpayers don't have to, they are eager to get behind pro-rail policies."
    The SD60E model features a paint scheme combining the infinity lines of the Norfolk Southern livery with the tracks of the GoRail logo. The lines end in an arrow to depict movement, and the GoRail colors carry through the modified speed lines to show the unity of GoRail and Norfolk Southern, creating the look of land as seen from above and signifying freight movement. The GoRail locomotive joins Norfolk Southern's 30th anniversary fleet of 20 non-traditional locomotives painted in the schemes of key predecessor railroad companies and the veterans' locomotive painted to honor those who have served in the military and reserves. The GoRail locomotive was painted in Altoona, involving 14 Norfolk Southern employees using 60 gallons of primer and paint over a 40-hour period.
    "Our industry has a great story to tell, and GoRail does an excellent job of educating the public about the benefits and strengths of the American freight rail system and the continuing high levels of freight rail investment to drive safety, service and growth," said Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman. "We are pleased to help promote GoRail and their pro-rail mission."

    What a fabulous video. Did we ever appreciate how much work goes into the painting/prepping of a locomotive? I do now. Thanks Norfolk Southern for caring enough to show us. The message about rail freight being good for America is just as true now as 150 years ago.

    How do railroads, such as NS and even historical groups, repaint locomotives in defunct railroad color schemes perfectly replicating logos, etc. NS recently painted a 42 year old SD45 in EL colors exactly as it was when new complete with EL logo and "Radio" lightning bolts. Amazing. That's not to mention their heritage feet. How do they do that?

    Really nice work. It is to bad NS won`t exert that same effort in re-opening the Cincinnati District also known as the Peavine. The fuel and time savings realized by using this route versus taking the long way to Cincinnati from Portsmouth through Columbus and Dayton is truly very inefficient. It is high time that NS gets this line back up and running instead of just letting it sit and waste away.

    I will never figure out why they, the different railroads, always leave the wheels and couplers that rusty color. They could at least paint them black also and then it would look complete.

    • @bradcliff7099
      @bradcliff7099 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was a railcar mechanic awhile back and I believe the reason is for inspections of the wheels . One thing most don't realise is that thereb really isn't a wash bay to pull into and clean cars and locomotives like a car or truck! If you think about it, the wheels being made obv. of steel and rolling on steel rails, over time they will get a thin layer of a rusty hue along the bottoms of the locomotive and all cars. which is nothing more than the result of friction between the wheels and rails.

    If I was the President, "I would make America great again" and start by giving railroads massive tax breaks and incentives to industries to ship by rail. When America was great, as I recall, the railroads played a major role in the economy, more so than now. We nee to get back to those days again. More trains, more industry, more manufacturing- and all of it linked by railroads.... but I'll never be the President. Oh well.

    While most sane people advocate a return to Rail freight (Railroad Express Agnecy) we must remember that when Rail made the US great it did so because the government had not developed an interstate highway system, trucks were used only for local deliveries from freight depots and the government did not tax the living daylights out of the railroads while giving tax breaks to trucking companies - often started up by returning veterans. The railroads were also taxed on track mileage thus giving incentive to remove as much of the parallel trackage that had been built. We must also remember that this taxation occurred when the engines and rolling stock were worn to the bone by 4 years of intense service during WW-II. Also, while being taxed to the hilt the operating companies, that had made huge investment in new locomotives and rolling stock in the early 1940's began to scrap this investment in favor of diesel. Their big error was not running the steam units until they came up for major tear-downs for boiler service thus minimizing the capitalization for now engines and maintenance facilities and all the cost of retraining the service and operating crews to run them.

      Here in the US, we refer to those as 'trucks'. The locomotive, while in the paint booth, was on shop trucks (basically standard railcar trucks), for whatever reason (maybe the locomotive trucks were being rebuilt). They are unpowered and allow the locomotive to be moved from area to area. The 3-axle trucks are the standard locomotive trucks on these EMD SD60 series locomotives.
