I totally agree with "wary who I follow". Comparison is a killer of joy. Regarding "limiting your gear" advice, last month I took a big old 6D and two lenses along with a small no-name analog camera for my photo walk. 6D didn't even make it out of camera bag. It was the first time since a long time, that I really felt joy of photography. And shots from that day turned out to be the best I've ever taken. No gear and settings to worry about let me focus on the moment and composition. It is good to sometimes limit your choices, so you could get creative despite all the limitations.
