Thank you!! I like how you explain what the casting directors are looking for in a slate, but the advice to personalize the camera as a dear friend just completely demystified for me how to actually do the slate. Love it!
Although I've learned this before, it is always phenomenal for me to hear it again and again and again from genuine people like yourself small market actor. Keep on doing what you're doing, I'm loving the videos.
Hey Kurt, thanks for this. I looked this up because this is the first time I'm going to be doing slate for a casting outside of Singapore, and I wanted to make sure I do it great. Your advice about how to establish that personal connection was gold. Thanks buddy. I'm excited about what's ahead for me after I do this and submit my audition. All the best to you too. Cheers, Kris from Singapore.
I love this channel! There seems to be all the information I need as I step up in this industry... I’ve booked a good number of jobs ( through backstage).. paying and non paying gigs.. ( I think we should do non paying gigs as well to get my face name and most importantly gain experience in this field.. hell.. I even booked a modeling job ( paid).. so I just got a self tape audition and in the directions they asked for a “ slate “.. not knowing at all what this was ( hey .. I’m brand new huh ? Give me a break ).. I went straight to this channel! And of course... here was the answer... thank you again! Your videos are a huge help to me
I take an Auditioning Technique class in my training course and I'm honestly quite horrible at it. Slating is difficult because I don't want to come off as fake and the camera makes me awkward so I will try pretending it's my best friend and see if that helps next week. Thanks! :)
I just wanted to say I saw you in Jerry and Marge go large. I was so excited. I usually do when I see you now. Just wanted to say you were really awesome in your part and glad your getting so many roles. I'm definitely a fan! ❤️ Supastar!!!😎
I am doing an audition tape soon, but I have a birth name and a stage name, which is actually the name I go by. Should I state my stage name, birth name, or both?
Rickitha S. D. If you’re under 18 years old you have to say your age. It depends what you’re audition for. If you have an auditon sheet to fill out it might say what you have to include.
Thanks so much for your videos! I really like them, I have a question based on your recommendations for a back drop. If I order the blue and grey one can I use the colors blue or grey for my slates as well?
I just did a slate where I looked like I would punch a baby so I came to find out how to be better, this helped thank you (also I don’t punch babies I just have a rbf)
Hi Kurt, your advice is definitely appreciated. But what if the scene you're auditioning for isn't a happy one at all? Like, say, a scene where a stoic character is emerging from the wreckage of a burning building that his family just died in?
Great question! There are many differing opinions on whether or not to adjust the slate depending on the role being auditioned for. I think slight adjustments can definitely work in your favor, but don't go too far as to slate in character. In your example of someone emerging from a burning building where his family just died, a straight faced (non smiling) slate would definitely work. Some people would go as far to be crying during the slate but I think that's a bit too much :)
Excellent, thanks for answering my question! By the way, I'm very impressed by your presenting skills. Your delivery is smooth as hell and you look/sound like a well-seasoned professional. Do you have any experience as a news anchor or program host?
Thanks so much for this info Kurt! I have a question because I have seen various example/variations for slate shots uploaded to Actors Access. For Actors Access specifically, what is the best way to slate (per headshot)? Is it close up, state info and then zoom to full body...is it full body, state info....etc. I'm not sure what is best and what info is best to state. Name & height? Thank you!!!
To be honest, all of those are fine. I've heard from so many casting directors that slate shots are useless and they never look at them. The only time they come into play is that they can help your submissions rank higher when you submit for an audition.
I know you posted this comment a year ago but it's still something that I think about all the time as well. There's so much varying info out there on this. Personally, I just add a slate shot to my headshots just because I figure it's better to put everything up there because ...well it can't hurt. Mine are from the waist up.
Hi Kurt, I love your videos. I have a question regarding slates. I am originally from Australia, therefore I have naturally have an Australian accent. When I slate, should I slate in my natural accent or my character accent? Thank you!
The thing to remember is that you're acting from the instant you enter that room until you leave, even when you're just introducing yourself. A lot of times Casting Directors already have an idea of whether or not they want to cast you the instant you walk in the door. Your very first impression is SO important because if they see the character in you from the moment you enter the room (or video) then all you have to do is nail the audition. But ultimately that's up to you, try it both ways and see which one gets you booked more frequently and use Kurts audition tracker to gather some statistics over time. Also, look up John Schneider and his audition for the character of Bo Duke on the show "The Dukes of Hazzard". There's a few videos on TH-cam of him talking about it. Try searching for "John Schneider - how i got the part". "Don't act what they want... BE what they want" - John Schneider.
You mean if it is a self tape audition? I don't think it is necessary to add the graphic. If you really want to, I would do it as a text overlay and make sure it doesn't cover your face.
do you recommend slating at the beginning or end of your audition when no direction has been given from the casting director ? also what about adding height and union status?
For commercial auditions, I put the slate in the beginning. For film and tv auditions, I put the slate at the end. If there are no directions, I just say name and height.
I would say just slate with your name and anything else they ask for specific to that audition. Keep it simple. I seem to get more traction with those tapes.
When I made this video, I was primarily auditioning for commercials. I think in the commercial world, slates are still used in the beginning quite a bit. In the film and television world, yes, slates are often at the end.
So I went to the audition today and they remembered me from another project we did together. Razorback tools you can see it on youtube. Im the construction worker with the light button downed shirt. So back to it. They gave me a digital slate with my name on it. What was odd they just asked me to hold up the slate, took a pic and then they ran speed and action. Is that ok, I never got to state my name or company. Waht do you think?
Yep, some casting offices are moving to digital slates. Hooray for new tech! Whenever you're at an audition, their specific directions always trump general info. Most of the time, you'll be asked to say your name and agency. But occasionally you be asked to say something different or, as in your case, just hold up your name and not say anything at all. It's just their preference. Watched the Razorback tools video; nice job!
I want to start off by saying thanks for the feedback your videos are really helpful and done very well. You can tell you are genuine and subscriber feedback will only boost your sub numbers. I will recommend your channel to all I know who need tips and tweaks in their own approaches to this industry. Oh and thanks for the compliment on the Razorback job. I have some other things coming up. But I will keep you updated on how your tips help me in my future projects.
My challenge is when I am alone to do a slate. We have this protocol where we pan down with the camera to show full body shot. I can`t do that when I am alone. Anybody here have the same issue? If so what do you do?
+thabile lindelwa magwagwa Hello! If they are asking for a profile in your audition video what they want is a profile view of your face and body. This is usually done after you slate. So, after you slate your name to the camera, turn to the side and stand for a few seconds so they can see your profile. For example st.depositphotos.com/1032561/1364/i/950/depositphotos_13648511-Indian-woman-full-body-from.jpg
Here’s my secret to a natural smile showing teeth: Place the edge of your upper teeth halfway between the bottom of your lower lip and the inside of your mouth. Now keep those teeth there as you smile.
I would not recommend it. If you really want to say your joke, add it to the end of your slate, AFTER you've provided all the information they've asked for

Well done!!

I definitely should not talk to the camera the way I talk to my best friend. But I'll try smiling!
Thankyou Sir
SO HELPFUL
Who else was forced to watch this by their theater teacher for whatever reason

Appreciate it
'm going to try this today. Thank you. :-)

I really want to act
What's stopping you? Just do it.
I'm worried that you might fall backwards into that bright white void.
If you are not yet represented by anyone what else would you need to say outside of your name in a slate?
often they will ask for your height and where you are located (city)
Ye dude fell you talking to me 😂☺️even if that was 7 years ago 😩

💌
Kurt, slate before or after the audition when editing? I heard to do after??
If they don't specify in the audition instructions I typically do it after.
My challenge is when I am alone to do a slate. We have this protocol where we pan down with the camera to show full body shot. I can`t do that when I am alone. Anybody here have the same issue? If so what do you do?
I just do the full body shot on it's own and then edit it together instead of panning.
Kurt Yu-eh? I was saying it wrong. I thought it was Kurt You.
I started saying "You" because it's easier for casting directors to pronounce :)
@@ActingCareerCenter People have trouble pronouncing my name too. Maybe I should change it before I get famous.
