I’m glad to see someone appreciates the meta-ness of Joel. He knows the “black man dies first trope” realizes he is not handcuffed to Gale, is in too close of a proximity to Sidney and simply GTFO until everything is done. His exit also gives him a little red herring flare. Great ranking.
Joel was a great character. I love how he shows up at the end after he knows it's all over and is pretending to be all nostalgic for his and Gale's "old days". Like they literally knew each other for a day and half 😂
Zack Cherry I totally forgot that he had just met her when she arrived on the campus. That’s makes it even more realistic that he left when the deaths start. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
I also liked Joel's character, who was pretty fun, without wearing out his welcome. And maybe I'm over analyzing it, but I thought they were going for him as a red herring, since he disappeared shortly before Randy's killing, only to reappear to "discover" the body in the news van.
And after he reads the Woodsboro Murders book he doesn't want to end up like Kenny did in the original film. Even though Gale exaggerated his death in the book saying he was gutted when really Stu cut his throat.
I'd love it if Cici was one of Sidney's best friends, along with Hale. But I'm afraid it would have felt too 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', cause Sarah was really iconic as Helen.
When you mention Cici being a character that would have benefited from some rewrites, it’s actually rewrites that brought her to how she appeared in the final theatrical version. In the original script that was leaked, her death is much more elaborate and brutal and her body is found staged exactly like Casey Becker’s hanging gutted from a tree in the back yard of the sorority house. This is how Gale makes the connection of Cici being a common nickname for someone named Casey or Cassandra. That’s when they realize it’s a copycat murder and therefore they are all related and their group is being targeted. This actually leads to them discussing Tatum and scouring the campus to find every student names Tatum before realizing that the killer is after the “new” Tatum or Sidney’s new best friend, Hallie. The original story was so much better to me, and the rewrites to change things due to the script leak caused most of the plot and character problems in the movie.
It always bugs me that Dewy dismisses Randy ideas on who the killers could be claiming that ‘these people are your friends’. I guess Dewy forgot the last movie that the killers was also Randy’s friends.
@@melainatar And even though he never lived to find out who the Windsor College Ghostfaces were he was right about Mickey and him calling Mrs Voorhees a terrific serial killer ended up being right too since Mrs Loomis had similar motivations to Pamela.
Gale's arc is why Scream 2 is my favorite (and the increase in tension in the set pieces). The ending mirroring Scream 1's ending, but she decides to get in the ambulance with Dewey instead of closing out the film like in the first is incredibly sweet. I also like the Broken Arrow music that serves as her and Dewey's love theme
Totally agreed. Gale is always an exciting and unpredictable character because you never know how she's gonna react in any given situation - it's her fire and spontaneity that makes her character so interesting. Of all 4 movies, this is definitely the best showcase for her. She's assertive, bossy, vulnerable, protective, fiery.... I was in frickin' high school when this came out (I saw all 4 in theaters), and I remember fully starting to cry (at the end of a horror movie!!) when Dewey came out on the stretcher alive and Gale ran over to him lovingly. That's a true testament to Cox's performance (and truly, all of the acting across the Scream franchise elevates it from other b-rate horror). Great rankings!
Joel was such a fun character. I love the way he delivers his lines and comes back at the end. He was so underrated. Also, your intro is so AHS 1984 and i love it.
I think the point of Derek is to show how billy messed Sidney up... she gets a guy who loves her and is generally the mr nice guy.... his purpose is to show sidneys trust issues and how the first film made her paranoid and cautious He was used as a red herring but his role serves are bigger purpose adding more depth to Sidney and how she has progressed after the the first events (just felt like to missed that reason of his character purpose 😊)
Yeah. Sidney's paranoia that Derek might be a killer like Billy allowed Mickey to stop her untying Derek and gave Mickey time to kill him. Which is why Sidney is in hiding for most of Scream 3. She thought if she was on her own people wouldn't get killed and she wouldn't have to deal with Ghostface copycats trying to kill her. Poor Sidney. Any man she gets into a relationship with she's going to have the thought of what and who Billy turned out to be in her mind, always wondering if they really love her or are just psychos trying to get close enough to kill her.

I agree! This was the best movie for Gale Weathers. I like the duality she has in her Character in this one and starts to shift her priorities. They developed her Character really well. I remember when this came out in the 90's, Laurie Metcalf was the only killer reveal that really surprised me. She's always been one my Fav Ghostface killers for that reason. In all the other movies I feel like each of the killers went through my mind once or twice as a possibility where as I didn't suspect Debbie Salt might actually have any depth to her character. Scream 2 through will always be the best Gale/Dewey movie for me and also, I really really like Cotton! Every time I watch Ray Donavan I always think of him as Cotton!

Matt S Yeah! I liked Halle’s personality and it seemed like she was very loyal to Sydney. I liked that about her. She stuck by her side and wanted to help her.
I liked Halley, but her relationship with Sidney felt it was born from proximity, not feeling. That's not unusual, particularly in college, where you're thrown together in new situations, but Halley never resonated as anything more than Sid's roommate. When Halley died, I was sad for Sidney, because she lost someone else she cared about, but I wasn't sad for Halley because I never felt like I knew her.
2 has always been my first love in the series. Gale was already invested in Sid's life since her mother's murder. So it made sense that she could spot a " copy cat"
i also must say, Cici (i spelled it wrong in the other comment oops lol) is the first person i think of when i think of Scream 2, probably next ro randy 😂 Her character is also the best because while everyone out decides to go party (which we KNOW is an integral step to getting murdered in a horror film) Cici decides to stay home, which also creates a different dynamic to the movie, as the first one went along with many cliches which was cleverly pointed out IN the film... anyway, she is the one who decides to stay home, not drink and... not even have sex. shes home alone and is the designated driver for her friends, yet she is the one who gets killed which is so against the horror movie cliches but thats where it gets you by surprise! it also just steps Cici up as a character because you can see her character has more depth than the average sorority sister, partying and drinking at frats.
I find no fault in your ranking but mine is slightly different: 1. Gale (best chase scene in the whole franchise, imo) 2. Sidney 3. Cici I also saw Scream 2 on opening night and while we were waiting, (the line was out the door and around the corner when the theater was only a quarter full with the first film) a guy from the screening just before ours screamed the killer was Cotton and my friends had to hold me back. Obviously that wasn't true, but I didn't know that at the time. Scream was my life back then and when he saw me coming he hurried up and said he was just kidding. Memories! Agreed about the Gale chase scene. The sound barrier maze really adds a nice flare to it. Sorry to hear about you bad theatre experience. I also get really uppity about spoilers. Even when they're jokes. It becomes very consuming when you're seeing it for the first time. I think my friend at school spoiled Randy's death for me. And the original was spoiled for me by the friends I was watching it with who had already seen it.
I thought Gale’s chase scene was the best in the franchise as well. I remember seeing it in the theaters and being so scared. Those corners? So creepy.
Randy deserved so much better. He was amazing probably one of my favorite characters in all the Scream movies. I honestly think he would've been a good killer in one of the later movies. For Scream 5 it would honestly be really interesting if Syd had something to do with the killings like she's been through so much that she snapped.
Personally, i really disliked Mrs Loomis solely because she left her family and didnt even come back until a WHILE after Billy's death. she states that it was incredibly easy to find someone psychotic enough to help her, like mickey, yet it took her a very long time to get there. again with the hidden in plain sight thing, thats exactly what she did which is why it couldve taken her more time to not be suspicious but I personally enjoyed Emma Roberts playing the role as the killer in the 4th one much more than Mrs. Loomis, although i think Loomis has the better motive (of course) it still seems unfair for her to paint her son as this perfect boy when she had abandoned him and doesnt have a right to put the blame on anyone else, not that its her fault at all, but she just proves how hard it was for billy when she left him, that when he left her she went on the same psycho killer tangent? it almost felt like tugging at strings for me. nevertheless, i also think Scream 2 is the best of the sequels next to 4 (love 3 but still gives a different vibe to the franchise)
I agree somewhat. I think that was the point. She left and caused a lot of the pain and trauma, which brought out Billy’s psychotic nature. I feel Billy was always messed up, certain events just made it more so. As his mother. She also holds some psychotic delusions of how perfect her boy was because face it, she couldn’t own up to her fault and admit her son was messed up in the head. Also his mom left when he was like I assume 15-16. Like he used that as an excuse to be psychotic.

Its a great scene as it is. I don't know that I would have liked Cici to replace Hallie though, as I like her dynamic with Sid and I think SMG would have pulled too much focus.
Was kinda surprised to see her on the list, but Portia's "Murphy" definitely deserves some recognition. I think people probably sleep on Portia De Rossi's comedic chops because of how she looks, but she can be HILARIOUS...if you haven't already, you should check her out in a show called 'Better Off Ted'.

However, I think they do enough to develop the character and for me, by the time of her death, I feel as if I have fully bought into her character which was successfully done with the additional film class scene. The scene itself gives her enough substance as a sorority girl on the campus. This is enough for me and I can’t really see her having a justified link to Sidney and don’t necessarily think it’s needs any more development. It would be odd. In this scene, she does have a good enough link with Randy. The build-up and suspense of that scene warrants placing as an opening to the film and far superior to the one with Maureen and Phil, which is a combination of the script and acting from SMG. Her character would have been equally as good to establish the name linkage explored later (but perhaps more of a backstory would have been needed to justify who she was if this was the case). I would rank her far higher because of the likeability, wit/knowledge of film and importance of her giving meat to the plot reasoning. Those are fair points. I'm not necessarily saying the she suffers because she doesn't have ties to Sidney, but that they could have scrapped her character, and combined elements of Cici into another character that was already connected to Sid, just to condense the cast and give everyone more meat.. As far as the film class scene goes, it was definitely a better choice to include her and the three other students, since it made it feel more dynamic than just the back and forth between randy and Mickey that it was originally. But it's almost like SMG in that scene was a completely different character because she was speaking dialogue that was originally written for Randy. 10th place is not a bad spot for me, and things could have gone way worse. Thankfully Wes Craven and Sarah Michelle are good at what they do.
Also I feel like everyone overlooks the scene where Sid & Mickey are in the police station and he basically lets it slip that he’s the killer by recapping Sid’s Bf getting his arm slit- and her eyes widen. This is never revisited again which I thought was very interesting.
Zack Cherry I mean her eyes widened because she quickly connected the dots of “how would Mickey know Derek got his arm slit unless he was actually the one that did it” but they made it so anticlimactic and subtle and instantly cut to the next scene. But I do see what you’re saying in that Derek was made to look like the Red Herring throughout the film. So in a way, it was sort of retconned or the idea was dismissed, maybe a script rush?
At that point it seemed like they all knew what happened to Derek, and Mickey had just been questions by the cops. It makes Mickey look suspicious for being the one to point the finger, but I think in that moment it was meant more so as having Sidney reliving her past. Other than the original, none of the killers were properly set up to be revealed in the end. But Mickey does seem sketchy.
Zack Cherry you’re right. Like you said, Scream 2 had a shit ton of characters in it. Not to mention being the longest in the series thus far at 120 minutes.
I think we love Sarah Michelle Gellar from I know what you did last summer, the grudge and other films, but what you say its true, they could have done something more with her character, we barely knew her

A lot of people wanted her to survive, but I know what you did last summer wouldnt have been the same without her death
Not sure If anyone else has mentioned this but I think the second reason why Cici was targeted was due to her views blaming real life violence on entertainment. Mickey was going to use this as his MO and she didn’t agree with it (this is also why I think Mickey killed her and not Mrs Loomis)
I love Scream 2, it is definitely my favourite sequel. I just think they've really missed the opportunity of adding two great kills to this movie: the frat sisters. I mean, Rebecca was so iconic at this point, I just can't stop thinking about how cool it would've looked. Portia and Rebecca getting killed by Ghostface!
Fun Info for Scream fans here: My mum worked on wardrobe on Scream 2 and 3. She told me a lot of gossip from the set that the character of Sarah Darling in Scream 3 played by Jenny Mcarthy is actually an injoke from producers and Wes because Wes used to call Sarah Michelle Gellar "darling" a lot while filming Scream 2. Sarah Michelle was originally meant to be in a third scene in Scream 2 which Wes cut out at the last minute. There was a scene designed to make Portia de Rossi's character Lois seem like a suspect because in the scene Cici clashes with Lois and the other sorority girls over which sorority Sydney joins, it takes place right after the classroom scene. (You can see photos of this confrontation scene online). Apparently Sarah and Wes had tension while filming Scream 2. Sarah was very expensive, she was flown in for filming in between Buffy and I Know What You Did Last Summer promo, so Scream 2 filming was held up by Sarah as she was so demand. This frustrated Wes Craven a lot and they clashed during Sarah's scene because Sarah had ideas about her stunts which Wes rejected. Sarah was so athletic from Buffy filming that they put her in uncomfortable boots so she was not out running the killer. (ever noticed Cici is wearing high heel boots while relaxing on the couch?) The original Scream 2 script had Cici's death set up very differently too. It was longer and more similar to Casey Beckers death. The original script had Cici being found hanging from a tree by Sydney at the party but was changed. Sarah was upset with the sudden change in script as it was leaked and had to learn new lines at short notice and requested more time to prepare which frustrated Wes. Sarah was also dating Jerry O'connell at the time who played Derek and Jerry was often late to set because he was with Sarah which frustrated Wes even more and he saw Sarah as a problem. Sarah was not included in the S2 movieposter either at the last minute (which is strange considering her fame at the time and all the extensive press she had to do to promote the film as part of her contract. My mom said there was no proof but there was a suggestion that Wes had something to do with it.
yes she was the 2nd biggest reveal to me in the franchise which blew my mind, Mrs Loomis does still seem to be B tech Pamela and for ranking between Cotton the big 3 and Randy and Mickey it would be difficult because Scream 2 is my 2nd favorite

As much as I love Rebecca Gayheart as Brenda, I think her turn as the killer was a little too cartoonish for the Scream franchise. Works for Urban Legend tho.
Randy's murder is very smart. They had the guts to kill the most beloved character of the franchise before the half of the movie. I remember watching this for the first time and being shocked as hell. Brilliant ! Scream 2 is my favorite... Btw, nice video man !
Scream 2 is my favorite. I feel like after the success of the first movie allowed them to bring in great actors who were very willing to toe the line heightened emotion and camp. It's like a good pop song, it's extra, but it's not too much.
I gotta say Mickey's my favorite character of the movie, and my favorite killer of the franchise. He may seem completely crazy and out of control, but he's actually smart. He wanted to go to trial, prove "the effects of cinema violence on society" and get deemed non-guilty. Many people think it was one way, that Mrs. Loomis was using him, but I'm pretty sure he was using her as well and had even planned to kill her had she not done it first.
Great Video. However, My notes of criticism: Derek and Hallie should have been much higher. Phil should have been on the list, since his kill was so memorable. That said, I am glad that Randy ranked so high and it makes since why Gale gets the rank she does.

Zack Cherry I think he is the worst in comparison of all ghostfaces(?, but he is on top of Mother Loomis because even tho I enjoyed Mother Loomis’ character, I think it could’ve been better, more scenes with her, make her mysterious (Even tho that was the surprise fact for me, she wasn’t mysterious, she even looked like a filling character, like she’s just there and that’s it) And that’s something that we didn’t have with Mickey, he had this mysterious creepy guy look and personality, so that ruined the surprise fact for me.

To prepare for the upcoming film, not only am I watching the series all over again, but also your videos too. I absolutely adore this franchise, and I love how you share the same compassion. And I completely agree that Mickie and Mrs. Loomis are severely underrated. Mickie steals every scene he's in, and Mrs. Loomis has the most real, believable motive of all the killers.

I feel like this movie succeeded where the original Friday the 13th "failed" in having a twist villain. Like a lot of people, I was flabbergasted when I discovered Mrs. Voorhees doesn't pop up until act 3. Also, I think Phil should have been ranked... or given proper credit. Either way
i must be biased, because Buffy The Vampire Slayer has been my favorite show... pretty much my whole life and i LOVE SMG... but CeCe is definitely my top character aside from the mains.
Have you thought about doing a best death ranking from horror movies? Some characters get a chase, some are killed in interesting ways, some are shocking deaths to the audience. I’d like to see your take on it.
I think Scream 2's Gale Weathers might be the best character in the whole series. It's unfortunate that Randy had to die for Gale to finally realize the gravity of the situation, but, it was a much needed attitude adjustment that didn't really sink in after Scream 1. Scream 3 needed this version of Gale Weathers, but then again, the whole movie went for a more comedic tone. I liked Scream 2's version of Randy too. More mature and distinguished, and confident among his people (film lovers). I get conflicted about Dewey. You made a good point about him being the heart of the story, especially in relation to Sidney and eventually Gale. It's hard to balance screen time with him though because so many other characters lack development. He's a cop, but, Gale was/is seemingly better at investigative work, while Randy provides a better understanding of plausible theories and establishing motives. Dewey is an important character that the various characters communicate with though, but, he didn't seem to ever see Sidney after their chat at the beginning of the movie. It's tough to get his role right, like in Scream 1. In retrospect, Mickey was quite terrifying. He blended in pretty well, and just wanted to see if he could get away with a killing spree.
I personally wasn't a huge fan of Mrs. Loomis just because I feel like she came too much out of nowhere (although your everyone is a suspect thing does make me rethink that a bit.) I really liked in the first movie how ingrained the identities of the killers are to the whole movie and even though there is the big surprise that there were two killers, the reveal feels so natural when it comes and I just felt dissapointed that Scream 2 didn't do that. I did think it was cool that she was Billy's mother, but even that felt under developed to me. Watching all your scream videos this last week though and learning about all the behind the scenes stuff going on, I think it explains all my thoughts on the sequels pretty well and I have really enjoyed watching them.
I agree. There was a lot of planning involved in setting up the killers from the original. Every sequel it could have been anyone as there isn’t really any proper set up since the actors themselves didn’t even know. Maybe Emma Roberts did, but that’s it.
I have two big issues with the Mrs. Loomis reveal: 1. There was no way for the audience to know she was Billy's mom, so that revalation felt cheap. She's such a peripheral character there's really no reason to suspect her. 2. Why would Gail not recognize her? With as much research as Gail would've done for her book about the first movie's murders you're telling me she never found pictures of Billy's estranged mother? His entire motivation for why he started killing? I don't buy it.
Issue #2 is a really good point. Sidney did say that Mrs. Loomis lost a bunch of weight and had plastic surgery. Maybe because Gail didn’t know her irl like Sidney did is why she wasn’t able to recognize her.
You should read the original 'Scream 2' script that was leaded online back in 1997 and do a character reranking as it has diff killers, diff character developments etc...
I've read it. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it doesn't have an ending. Or at least it ends with Cotton killing Sidney. They definitely improved on it for the final cut of the movie.
@@ZackCherry in the one I read it has 4 killers, Derek and Haley operated by Mrs. Loomis and then Cotton is revealed after Sidney kills them. Need to reread again I think, haven't looked at it in years.
mickey is the perfect killer,he is agent 47 after all. the greatest hitman of all times. also agent 47 was named the ghost which means he is never seen when he makes his kills :)
Haha. It's funny you say about GALE sitting out of the films climax in this film. Scream 4 was worse, she was hardly in the last half 🤣. But yes GALE is number 1 for me too. As for SMG that scene could have easily been an opener for the 2nd film. It had strong build up, was lengthy enough and SMG was in IKWYDLS at that time, but I am so glad it wasn't because its similar to drews scene. It is nice to have that similarity but in the middle of the film as it was 👍. They needed something different for the second time around opener and that they did. The setting, The actors, the 10,000 ghost face masks. I think it worked well 👍. Good move. Ranking. 5. Dewey, 4. Randy, 3. Sidney, 2. Cici, 1. Gale 👍
Yeah, I haven't even considered Scream 4 but will be getting to it eventually. I think Deweys contribution to the climaxes are even worse. Fake out deaths in the first 2 movies, and then knocked out with a bed pan in 4 haha

I agree with your ranking. I love Courteney's portrayal of Gale and she definitely deserved the #1 spot. I have to be honest where the character of Debbie Salt is concerned, I wish they would've picked a different actress. Every time the character was on screen all I could think of is why is Roseanne's sister Jackie in a Scream movie. Others may not have had this problem, but knowing her so well as Jackie was really distracting.
Haha I can understand that, like seeing Buff the vampire slayer as Cici. I never did watch a lot of Roseanne though, so I can't say I have the same issue.
Derek and Mrs. Loomis should be higher on the list, IMO. And I would rank Elise Neal over Jada Pinkett. Derek, Mrs. Loomis, Halle, and Dewey were my favorites from this installment. Phone-head!
1. Gale (She was absolutely amazing in this movie even more than in the first one. She had some sort of redemption arc here and I think possibly the most relevance out of all the Scream movies) 2. Randy (I liked him in the first movie already, but I started to love him here. I think the class scene was one of the most importants of the movie since It serves to know better some of the surrounding characters and that really made me appreciate the character more. But that didn't stop there since I loved every single scene in which he was involved during the movie, always craving for more) 3. Dewey (he's always a pleasure to watch and once again his scenes and storyline with Gale were really entertaining) 4. Cotton (I was really surprised to see him again since I thought he wasn't supposed to be an important character when I first watched the movie, but I really liked him here and most than that I liked the idea behind the character: accused by Sidney, he doesn't hold a grudge on her but desperately wants to be a celebrity and get money. Also, he's sort of the hero here) 5. Sidney (I would have wanted to put her higher but honestly I liked her very much only in three scenes: the opening, when she answers the phone to the prankster; the acting scene on stage; the finale with her clash with the killers. Other than that, she doesn't even look like the protagonist that much) 6. Mickey (ok, here I was and still am really frustrated because they really wasted his character. I know there were many characters here, but he shows up in just a few scenes during the movie and is the less relevant of Sidney's friends, at the point that the first time I watched Scream 2 I was sure he was at least one of the killers, since he disappeared after the cafeteria scene and wasn't a victim either. I was so frustrated that at first I hated him and considered him an horrible Ghostface. However, every time I rewatch Scream 2 I found his character and performance post-reveal amazing and captivating. He's a psycho, but in a different way than Billy and Stu. He's not funny at all, he's really intimidating and the actor did a great job with him during the finale) 7. Debbie Loomis (of course didn't saw her reveal coming at all, but I love the fact that she was present during the whole movie but never considered a suspect and even though She never met Sidney during It, she instantly recognized her. Also, she's a psycho in the finale and her acting his great as well) 8. Joel (funny and he was used pretty well to make you believe he could actually be Ghostface since he was off-screen when Randy was killed and ran away afterwards. Also, his shoes and jeans were very similar to Debbie's when Ghostface was shown leaving the van. Great decoy) 9. Derek (he's a nice guy, just not relevant at all) 10. Maureen (great character for the second best Scream opening sequence) 11. Cici (the first time I watched the movie I was really looking forward to hwr character for the class scene alone. I didn't know She wasn't meant to be there at first, but I'm so glad she was included) 12. Hallie (never liked her. She's possibly even less important than Derek and shows no personality out of her wanting to enter the sorority) 13. Sorority girls (annoying, can't consider them as individuals) 14. Hartley (at least I remember the sorority girls for being annoying. I keep forgetting chief Hartley is even in the movie)
I love Laurie Metcalf, but I am a fan of Mrs. Loomis simply because her motive was the most logical verses all the other killers in the franchise... & that was "An Eye For An Eye"; In her own words, "Good old fashioned, revenge." & though she hated Maureen Prescott, it all still u-turned back to her avenging the death of her son.

I’m glad to see someone appreciates the meta-ness of Joel. He knows the “black man dies first trope” realizes he is not handcuffed to Gale, is in too close of a proximity to Sidney and simply GTFO until everything is done. His exit also gives him a little red herring flare. Great ranking.
Joel was a great character. I love how he shows up at the end after he knows it's all over and is pretending to be all nostalgic for his and Gale's "old days". Like they literally knew each other for a day and half 😂

I also liked Joel's character, who was pretty fun, without wearing out his welcome. And maybe I'm over analyzing it, but I thought they were going for him as a red herring, since he disappeared shortly before Randy's killing, only to reappear to "discover" the body in the news van.
Michael L Yeah, they wanted you to think it was him. They even do a shot of his boots to show he is wearing all black boots like ghost face.
And after he reads the Woodsboro Murders book he doesn't want to end up like Kenny did in the original film. Even though Gale exaggerated his death in the book saying he was gutted when really Stu cut his throat.

Sarah Michelle Gellar steals the show in everything she is in so I can understand why they killed her off early. Scream is all about Sidney.

I'd love it if Cici was one of Sidney's best friends, along with Hale. But I'm afraid it would have felt too 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', cause Sarah was really iconic as Helen.
When you mention Cici being a character that would have benefited from some rewrites, it’s actually rewrites that brought her to how she appeared in the final theatrical version. In the original script that was leaked, her death is much more elaborate and brutal and her body is found staged exactly like Casey Becker’s hanging gutted from a tree in the back yard of the sorority house. This is how Gale makes the connection of Cici being a common nickname for someone named Casey or Cassandra. That’s when they realize it’s a copycat murder and therefore they are all related and their group is being targeted. This actually leads to them discussing Tatum and scouring the campus to find every student names Tatum before realizing that the killer is after the “new” Tatum or Sidney’s new best friend, Hallie. The original story was so much better to me, and the rewrites to change things due to the script leak caused most of the plot and character problems in the movie.
It always bugs me that Dewy dismisses Randy ideas on who the killers could be claiming that ‘these people are your friends’. I guess Dewy forgot the last movie that the killers was also Randy’s friends.
He didn't say that to dismiss his ideas, he said it like "these people are your friends, you know them, how can you not know who the killer is?"

Gale's arc is why Scream 2 is my favorite (and the increase in tension in the set pieces). The ending mirroring Scream 1's ending, but she decides to get in the ambulance with Dewey instead of closing out the film like in the first is incredibly sweet. I also like the Broken Arrow music that serves as her and Dewey's love theme

Totally agreed. Gale is always an exciting and unpredictable character because you never know how she's gonna react in any given situation - it's her fire and spontaneity that makes her character so interesting. Of all 4 movies, this is definitely the best showcase for her. She's assertive, bossy, vulnerable, protective, fiery.... I was in frickin' high school when this came out (I saw all 4 in theaters), and I remember fully starting to cry (at the end of a horror movie!!) when Dewey came out on the stretcher alive and Gale ran over to him lovingly. That's a true testament to Cox's performance (and truly, all of the acting across the Scream franchise elevates it from other b-rate horror). Great rankings!

Joel was such a fun character. I love the way he delivers his lines and comes back at the end. He was so underrated. Also, your intro is so AHS 1984 and i love it.
I think the point of Derek is to show how billy messed Sidney up... she gets a guy who loves her and is generally the mr nice guy.... his purpose is to show sidneys trust issues and how the first film made her paranoid and cautious

Yeah. Sidney's paranoia that Derek might be a killer like Billy allowed Mickey to stop her untying Derek and gave Mickey time to kill him. Which is why Sidney is in hiding for most of Scream 3. She thought if she was on her own people wouldn't get killed and she wouldn't have to deal with Ghostface copycats trying to kill her. Poor Sidney. Any man she gets into a relationship with she's going to have the thought of what and who Billy turned out to be in her mind, always wondering if they really love her or are just psychos trying to get close enough to kill her.

I agree! This was the best movie for Gale Weathers. I like the duality she has in her Character in this one and starts to shift her priorities. They developed her Character really well. I remember when this came out in the 90's, Laurie Metcalf was the only killer reveal that really surprised me. She's always been one my Fav Ghostface killers for that reason. In all the other movies I feel like each of the killers went through my mind once or twice as a possibility where as I didn't suspect Debbie Salt might actually have any depth to her character. Scream 2 through will always be the best Gale/Dewey movie for me and also, I really really like Cotton! Every time I watch Ray Donavan I always think of him as Cotton!

I liked Halley, but her relationship with Sidney felt it was born from proximity, not feeling. That's not unusual, particularly in college, where you're thrown together in new situations, but Halley never resonated as anything more than Sid's roommate. When Halley died, I was sad for Sidney, because she lost someone else she cared about, but I wasn't sad for Halley because I never felt like I knew her.
2 has always been my first love in the series. Gale was already invested in Sid's life since her mother's murder. So it made sense that she could spot a " copy cat"
I love both one and two and go back and forth on which is my favorite as they both are better than the other in certain ways.

i also must say, Cici (i spelled it wrong in the other comment oops lol) is the first person i think of when i think of Scream 2, probably next ro randy 😂 Her character is also the best because while everyone out decides to go party (which we KNOW is an integral step to getting murdered in a horror film) Cici decides to stay home, which also creates a different dynamic to the movie, as the first one went along with many cliches which was cleverly pointed out IN the film... anyway, she is the one who decides to stay home, not drink and... not even have sex. shes home alone and is the designated driver for her friends, yet she is the one who gets killed which is so against the horror movie cliches but thats where it gets you by surprise! it also just steps Cici up as a character because you can see her character has more depth than the average sorority sister, partying and drinking at frats.

I also saw Scream 2 on opening night and while we were waiting, (the line was out the door and around the corner when the theater was only a quarter full with the first film) a guy from the screening just before ours screamed the killer was Cotton and my friends had to hold me back. Obviously that wasn't true, but I didn't know that at the time. Scream was my life back then and when he saw me coming he hurried up and said he was just kidding. Memories! I'm new to your channel, thanks yt algorithm, and really enjoy your content.
Agreed about the Gale chase scene. The sound barrier maze really adds a nice flare to it. Sorry to hear about you bad theatre experience. I also get really uppity about spoilers. Even when they're jokes. It becomes very consuming when you're seeing it for the first time. I think my friend at school spoiled Randy's death for me. And the original was spoiled for me by the friends I was watching it with who had already seen it.

Randy deserved so much better. He was amazing probably one of my favorite characters in all the Scream movies. I honestly think he would've been a good killer in one of the later movies. For Scream 5 it would honestly be really interesting if Syd had something to do with the killings like she's been through so much that she snapped.
Personally, i really disliked Mrs Loomis solely because she left her family and didnt even come back until a WHILE after Billy's death. she states that it was incredibly easy to find someone psychotic enough to help her, like mickey, yet it took her a very long time to get there. again with the hidden in plain sight thing, thats exactly what she did which is why it couldve taken her more time to not be suspicious but I personally enjoyed Emma Roberts playing the role as the killer in the 4th one much more than Mrs. Loomis, although i think Loomis has the better motive (of course) it still seems unfair for her to paint her son as this perfect boy when she had abandoned him and doesnt have a right to put the blame on anyone else, not that its her fault at all, but she just proves how hard it was for billy when she left him, that when he left her she went on the same psycho killer tangent? it almost felt like tugging at strings for me. nevertheless, i also think Scream 2 is the best of the sequels next to 4 (love 3 but still gives a different vibe to the franchise)
I agree somewhat. I think that was the point. She left and caused a lot of the pain and trauma, which brought out Billy’s psychotic nature. I feel Billy was always messed up, certain events just made it more so. As his mother. She also holds some psychotic delusions of how perfect her boy was because face it, she couldn’t own up to her fault and admit her son was messed up in the head. Also his mom left when he was like I assume 15-16. Like he used that as an excuse to be psychotic.
Cici was my all-time favorite character in Scream 2. Loved SMG’s acting in this role.

Was kinda surprised to see her on the list, but Portia's "Murphy" definitely deserves some recognition. I think people probably sleep on Portia De Rossi's comedic chops because of how she looks, but she can be HILARIOUS...if you haven't already, you should check her out in a show called 'Better Off Ted'.

Reasoning for Cici: I completely appreciate your reasoning for your ranking of her in your video. However, I think they do enough to develop the character and for me, by the time of her death, I feel as if I have fully bought into her character which was successfully done with the additional film class scene. The scene itself gives her enough substance as a sorority girl on the campus. This is enough for me and I can’t really see her having a justified link to Sidney and don’t necessarily think it’s needs any more development. It would be odd. In this scene, she does have a good enough link with Randy. The build-up and suspense of that scene warrants placing as an opening to the film and far superior to the one with Maureen and Phil, which is a combination of the script and acting from SMG. Her character would have been equally as good to establish the name linkage explored later (but perhaps more of a backstory would have been needed to justify who she was if this was the case). I would rank her far higher because of the likeability, wit/knowledge of film and importance of her giving meat to the plot reasoning. Those are fair points. I'm not necessarily saying the she suffers because she doesn't have ties to Sidney, but that they could have scrapped her character, and combined elements of Cici into another character that was already connected to Sid, just to condense the cast and give everyone more meat..
As far as the film class scene goes, it was definitely a better choice to include her and the three other students, since it made it feel more dynamic than just the back and forth between randy and Mickey that it was originally. But it's almost like SMG in that scene was a completely different character because she was speaking dialogue that was originally written for Randy.
10th place is not a bad spot for me, and things could have gone way worse. Thankfully Wes Craven and Sarah Michelle are good at what they do.

Also I feel like everyone overlooks the scene where Sid & Mickey are in the police station and he basically lets it slip that he’s the killer by recapping Sid’s Bf getting his arm slit- and her eyes widen. This is never revisited again which I thought was very interesting.
I think it was setting up Sidney's suspicion of Derek throughout the film, and then was paid off later when messed with her head some more.
Zack Cherry I mean her eyes widened because she quickly connected the dots of “how would Mickey know Derek got his arm slit unless he was actually the one that did it” but they made it so anticlimactic and subtle and instantly cut to the next scene. But I do see what you’re saying in that Derek was made to look like the Red Herring throughout the film. So in a way, it was sort of retconned or the idea was dismissed, maybe a script rush?
At that point it seemed like they all knew what happened to Derek, and Mickey had just been questions by the cops. It makes Mickey look suspicious for being the one to point the finger, but I think in that moment it was meant more so as having Sidney reliving her past. Other than the original, none of the killers were properly set up to be revealed in the end. But Mickey does seem sketchy.

Not sure If anyone else has mentioned this but I think the second reason why Cici was targeted was due to her views blaming real life violence on entertainment. Mickey was going to use this as his MO and she didn’t agree with it (this is also why I think Mickey killed her and not Mrs Loomis)

Fun Info for Scream fans here:
My mum worked on wardrobe on Scream 2 and 3. She told me a lot of gossip from the set that the character of Sarah Darling in Scream 3 played by Jenny Mcarthy is actually an injoke from producers and Wes because Wes used to call Sarah Michelle Gellar "darling" a lot while filming Scream 2.
Sarah Michelle was originally meant to be in a third scene in Scream 2 which Wes cut out at the last minute.
There was a scene designed to make Portia de Rossi's character Lois seem like a suspect because in the scene Cici clashes with Lois and the other sorority girls over which sorority Sydney joins, it takes place right after the classroom scene. (You can see photos of this confrontation scene online).
Apparently Sarah and Wes had tension while filming Scream 2. Sarah was very expensive, she was flown in for filming in between Buffy and I Know What You Did Last Summer promo, so Scream 2 filming was held up by Sarah as she was so demand. This frustrated Wes Craven a lot and they clashed during Sarah's scene because Sarah had ideas about her stunts which Wes rejected. Sarah was so athletic from Buffy filming that they put her in uncomfortable boots so she was not out running the killer. (ever noticed Cici is wearing high heel boots while relaxing on the couch?)
The original Scream 2 script had Cici's death set up very differently too. It was longer and more similar to Casey Beckers death. The original script had Cici being found hanging from a tree by Sydney at the party but was changed.
Sarah was upset with the sudden change in script as it was leaked and had to learn new lines at short notice and requested more time to prepare which frustrated Wes. Sarah was also dating Jerry O'connell at the time who played Derek and Jerry was often late to set because he was with Sarah which frustrated Wes even more and he saw Sarah as a problem.
Sarah was not included in the S2 movieposter either at the last minute (which is strange considering her fame at the time and all the extensive press she had to do to promote the film as part of her contract. My mom said there was no proof but there was a suggestion that Wes had something to do with it.

As much as I love Rebecca Gayheart as Brenda, I think her turn as the killer was a little too cartoonish for the Scream franchise. Works for Urban Legend tho.

Randy's murder is very smart. They had the guts to kill the most beloved character of the franchise before the half of the movie. I remember watching this for the first time and being shocked as hell. Brilliant !

Scream 2 is my favorite. I feel like after the success of the first movie allowed them to bring in great actors who were very willing to toe the line heightened emotion and camp. It's like a good pop song, it's extra, but it's not too much.

I gotta say Mickey's my favorite character of the movie, and my favorite killer of the franchise. He may seem completely crazy and out of control, but he's actually smart. He wanted to go to trial, prove "the effects of cinema violence on society" and get deemed non-guilty. Many people think it was one way, that Mrs. Loomis was using him, but I'm pretty sure he was using her as well and had even planned to kill her had she not done it first.
Great Video. However, My notes of criticism: Derek and Hallie should have been much higher. Phil should have been on the list, since his kill was so memorable. That said, I am glad that Randy ranked so high and it makes since why Gale gets the rank she does.

#8- Mickey (Um I don’t like his character, it was a little obvious. He is just a Billy copycat, a fvcked up dude who is trying to take Sid down. I guess Mother Loomis was looking for his son in Mickey... Btw, I think Mickey is the worst Ghostface😳)
#7- Derek (I really like this character, I felt so sad when he died, Sid deserved to have a little relationship love!!! also this character is very romantic which adds that little of cliche love to the movie)
#6- Cici (Her death scene is just iconic, one of if not the best of the entire saga, it feels like she could’ve been a principal character if the writers wanted)
#5- Cotton (I don’t like Cotton and that’s bc of this movie, but I love how they added this “crazy for fame” side of Cotton)
#4- Sidney (I agree, I also think she is really insecure and dramatic in this movie, BUT I understand her bc of her trauma)
#3- Dewey (I think this Dewey is one of the best, not like the S1 Dewey but he has this annoying thing against Gale which I hate so, that takes away a lot of points... But he shows a lot of confidence and I really like that)
#2- Randy (So sad to see one of the best characters die, he didn’t deserved that, he was the entire BRAIN of this movie, but I guess that title is now for Gale 😌)

Zack Cherry I think he is the worst in comparison of all ghostfaces(?, but he is on top of Mother Loomis because even tho I enjoyed Mother Loomis’ character, I think it could’ve been better, more scenes with her, make her mysterious (Even tho that was the surprise fact for me, she wasn’t mysterious, she even looked like a filling character, like she’s just there and that’s it)
And that’s something that we didn’t have with Mickey, he had this mysterious creepy guy look and personality, so that ruined the surprise fact for me.

To prepare for the upcoming film, not only am I watching the series all over again, but also your videos too. I absolutely adore this franchise, and I love how you share the same compassion. And I completely agree that Mickie and Mrs. Loomis are severely underrated. Mickie steals every scene he's in, and Mrs. Loomis has the most real, believable motive of all the killers.
As surprising as your list was, I kinda have to agree actually.

I feel like this movie succeeded where the original Friday the 13th "failed" in having a twist villain. Like a lot of people, I was flabbergasted when I discovered Mrs. Voorhees doesn't pop up until act 3.

I feel like SMG is the main kill in Scream 2. Its such a specific scene that it seems both part of and separate from the film.
i must be biased, because Buffy The Vampire Slayer has been my favorite show... pretty much my whole life and i LOVE SMG... but CeCe is definitely my top character aside from the mains.
Cotton is my favorite character in this movie. Very well rounded, and I like that he's the hero in the end.
Have you thought about doing a best death ranking from horror movies? Some characters get a chase, some are killed in interesting ways, some are shocking deaths to the audience. I’d like to see your take on it.
I think Scream 2's Gale Weathers might be the best character in the whole series. It's unfortunate that Randy had to die for Gale to finally realize the gravity of the situation, but, it was a much needed attitude adjustment that didn't really sink in after Scream 1. Scream 3 needed this version of Gale Weathers, but then again, the whole movie went for a more comedic tone.
I liked Scream 2's version of Randy too. More mature and distinguished, and confident among his people (film lovers).
I get conflicted about Dewey. You made a good point about him being the heart of the story, especially in relation to Sidney and eventually Gale. It's hard to balance screen time with him though because so many other characters lack development. He's a cop, but, Gale was/is seemingly better at investigative work, while Randy provides a better understanding of plausible theories and establishing motives. Dewey is an important character that the various characters communicate with though, but, he didn't seem to ever see Sidney after their chat at the beginning of the movie. It's tough to get his role right, like in Scream 1.
In retrospect, Mickey was quite terrifying. He blended in pretty well, and just wanted to see if he could get away with a killing spree.

The only thing I was a bit disappointed with Dewey is that he never mentioned his sister’s murder, let alone mourned her
I personally wasn't a huge fan of Mrs. Loomis just because I feel like she came too much out of nowhere (although your everyone is a suspect thing does make me rethink that a bit.) I really liked in the first movie how ingrained the identities of the killers are to the whole movie and even though there is the big surprise that there were two killers, the reveal feels so natural when it comes and I just felt dissapointed that Scream 2 didn't do that. I did think it was cool that she was Billy's mother, but even that felt under developed to me. Watching all your scream videos this last week though and learning about all the behind the scenes stuff going on, I think it explains all my thoughts on the sequels pretty well and I have really enjoyed watching them.
I agree. There was a lot of planning involved in setting up the killers from the original. Every sequel it could have been anyone as there isn’t really any proper set up since the actors themselves didn’t even know. Maybe Emma Roberts did, but that’s it.
I have two big issues with the Mrs. Loomis reveal:
1. There was no way for the audience to know she was Billy's mom, so that revalation felt cheap. She's such a peripheral character there's really no reason to suspect her.
2. Why would Gail not recognize her? With as much research as Gail would've done for her book about the first movie's murders you're telling me she never found pictures of Billy's estranged mother? His entire motivation for why he started killing? I don't buy it.
Issue #2 is a really good point. Sidney did say that Mrs. Loomis lost a bunch of weight and had plastic surgery. Maybe because Gail didn’t know her irl like Sidney did is why she wasn’t able to recognize her.

You should read the original 'Scream 2' script that was leaded online back in 1997 and do a character reranking as it has diff killers, diff character developments etc...
I've read it. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it doesn't have an ending. Or at least it ends with Cotton killing Sidney. They definitely improved on it for the final cut of the movie.
@@ZackCherry in the one I read it has 4 killers, Derek and Haley operated by Mrs. Loomis and then Cotton is revealed after Sidney kills them. Need to reread again I think, haven't looked at it in years.

mickey is the perfect killer,he is agent 47 after all. the greatest hitman of all times. also agent 47 was named the ghost which means he is never seen when he makes his kills :)

Haha. It's funny you say about GALE sitting out of the films climax in this film. Scream 4 was worse, she was hardly in the last half 🤣. But yes GALE is number 1 for me too.
As for SMG that scene could have easily been an opener for the 2nd film. It had strong build up, was lengthy enough and SMG was in IKWYDLS at that time, but I am so glad it wasn't because its similar to drews scene. It is nice to have that similarity but in the middle of the film as it was 👍. They needed something different for the second time around opener and that they did. The setting, The actors, the 10,000 ghost face masks. I think it worked well 👍. Good move.

I agree with your ranking. I love Courteney's portrayal of Gale and she definitely deserved the #1 spot. I have to be honest where the character of Debbie Salt is concerned, I wish they would've picked a different actress. Every time the character was on screen all I could think of is why is Roseanne's sister Jackie in a Scream movie. Others may not have had this problem, but knowing her so well as Jackie was really distracting.
Haha I can understand that, like seeing Buff the vampire slayer as Cici. I never did watch a lot of Roseanne though, so I can't say I have the same issue.
Derek and Mrs. Loomis should be higher on the list, IMO. And I would rank Elise Neal over Jada Pinkett. Derek, Mrs. Loomis, Halle, and Dewey were my favorites from this installment. Phone-head!

Randy thought sequels sucked so maybe he underestimated the rules too successful survive a horror sequel.
1. Gale (She was absolutely amazing in this movie even more than in the first one. She had some sort of redemption arc here and I think possibly the most relevance out of all the Scream movies)
2. Randy (I liked him in the first movie already, but I started to love him here. I think the class scene was one of the most importants of the movie since It serves to know better some of the surrounding characters and that really made me appreciate the character more. But that didn't stop there since I loved every single scene in which he was involved during the movie, always craving for more)
3. Dewey (he's always a pleasure to watch and once again his scenes and storyline with Gale were really entertaining)
4. Cotton (I was really surprised to see him again since I thought he wasn't supposed to be an important character when I first watched the movie, but I really liked him here and most than that I liked the idea behind the character: accused by Sidney, he doesn't hold a grudge on her but desperately wants to be a celebrity and get money. Also, he's sort of the hero here)
5. Sidney (I would have wanted to put her higher but honestly I liked her very much only in three scenes: the opening, when she answers the phone to the prankster; the acting scene on stage; the finale with her clash with the killers. Other than that, she doesn't even look like the protagonist that much)
6. Mickey (ok, here I was and still am really frustrated because they really wasted his character. I know there were many characters here, but he shows up in just a few scenes during the movie and is the less relevant of Sidney's friends, at the point that the first time I watched Scream 2 I was sure he was at least one of the killers, since he disappeared after the cafeteria scene and wasn't a victim either. I was so frustrated that at first I hated him and considered him an horrible Ghostface. However, every time I rewatch Scream 2 I found his character and performance post-reveal amazing and captivating. He's a psycho, but in a different way than Billy and Stu. He's not funny at all, he's really intimidating and the actor did a great job with him during the finale)
7. Debbie Loomis (of course didn't saw her reveal coming at all, but I love the fact that she was present during the whole movie but never considered a suspect and even though She never met Sidney during It, she instantly recognized her. Also, she's a psycho in the finale and her acting his great as well)
8. Joel (funny and he was used pretty well to make you believe he could actually be Ghostface since he was off-screen when Randy was killed and ran away afterwards. Also, his shoes and jeans were very similar to Debbie's when Ghostface was shown leaving the van. Great decoy)
9. Derek (he's a nice guy, just not relevant at all)
10. Maureen (great character for the second best Scream opening sequence)
11. Cici (the first time I watched the movie I was really looking forward to hwr character for the class scene alone. I didn't know She wasn't meant to be there at first, but I'm so glad she was included)
12. Hallie (never liked her. She's possibly even less important than Derek and shows no personality out of her wanting to enter the sorority)
13. Sorority girls (annoying, can't consider them as individuals)
14. Hartley (at least I remember the sorority girls for being annoying. I keep forgetting chief Hartley is even in the movie)
In the script, Mrs. Loomus' first name was Nancy which is a reference to ti the actress who played Annie Brackett in 1978's Halloween.
