Zach’s Dmitry seems more lighthearted and childlike. Not like he’s immature but he’s very energetic in a brighter sense. Derek’s Dmitry seems more serious and solid - he’s a bit more confident and bold.
Honestly, I prefer Zach's more. But that might have to With the fact that i got to see him live, and I also grew up viewing the animated Dimitri as not only "hot" but also a goofball :)
Sorry for this really late reply! You're right though! Derek was portrayed Dmitry to show a very tough exterior despite being broken and beaten up on the inside; hence, having difficulty to fully address, express and accept his feelings for Anya. I saw Zach live and he was amazing! He gave the character a brighter, more open side. He himself acknowledges his feelings about life and for Anya.
I saw Zach as Dmitry back in October! It was a Sunday matinee and Zach was still the understudy, but he was absolutely AMAZING, one of my favorite actors in the show.
Mine, too! Zach was already the not thebunderstudy. I didnt know that Derek Klena was the original when i saw it. Im kind of glad because I didn't have any bias . I loved Zach so much!
At first I was like, "no, no, no! this new guy is too nice and friendly to play the cool Dmitry. But then, after watching some vids of him and how he makes his own version of Dmitry, I'm starting to love him too as Dima. I think it's really cool how we have 2 contrasting versions of Dima- the cool and proud one, Derek's, and the playful and more friendly one, Zach's. But whoever you prefer, both are excellent in taking their role I think. :)
Sorry for the late reply! I agree with you. I've seen *cough* bootlegs *cough* of Derek and he really brought animated Dmitry to life. He was a bit more sarcastic and rude to Anya than Zach's Dima (I saw Zach live), even if Zach's Dima was skeptical about Anya at first.
Derek’s hand motions and gestures are just perfectly spot on every time. He’s so authentic and he’s never exaggerating with an overload of body gestures!! And he’s a very good vocalist too, of course. I find it very hard for anyone to play the part better than him.
Wow this is amazing💕💕💕 both are good, but if I have to choose, I will say Derek, bc idk, but I think I feel more things when I listen him, I really feel he’s showing us a beautiful petersburg(? Xd
It’s not really fair to compare these two when one has been rehearsing this role nonstop and the other has been in the ensemble and only working on this role every once in a while since he’s the understudy. The point is that both are great and extremely talented.
I agree with you. I don't understand why people think this edit was made to compare them. All I wanted was a duet of them singing My Petersburg, thus creating this edit.
Oh god I can’t stop listening to this. They’re both incredible and when you put their voices together, agh, I can’t even explain it. It’s just incredible.
I do too, actually. But yes, Zach is a really good Dmitry 😄! Derek's rich tone fits Christy's voice perfectly, and in my opinion, Zach's light tone fits Kathryn's (Christy's understudy).
It's interesting how people can hear the same performances in such different ways. For me, Zach's voice is richer. There is a gravity to it that I just don't hear in Derek's voice.
hmm... I think Zach has a very bright tone so I wouldn't call it rich, it's more clear than Derek's but not really rich, Derek is most likely a baritone singer and Zach a tenor. But both versions in different ways :) I saw Zach in Anastasia but never had the chance to catch Derek before his final bow, unfortunately.
Sorry for the late reply! I've been trying to find clips of Cody ever since he started playing Dima, but I still haven't found anything. It's also gonna be hard since the show closed a few days ago and there's now a lack of source materials. 😞
I love how in the description, you specifically say that you didn’t make this to compare the two, but literally everyone in the comments is writing an essay as to why they prefer one over the other, as if you asked them to.
Thank you so much! I had to edit my description just to say what I actually mean. I never got to see Derek perform live, but he's amazing though. It was Zach who I saw live and he was amazing too.
Honestly, it boils down to preference. They both sound absolutely fantastic. Zach reminds me of Brad Kane when he voice Disney's Aladdin with his animated, light voiced and more youthful energy. Derek, whom I heard originally, just has a more deeper and richer tone which I don't hear often in roles like these. So it was a breath of fresh air for me. I say we the audience won for having both male vocalists give Dmitri's character to life.
I love two (2) men. but real talk thank you for making this I didn't know I needed this in my life, especially the parts where you edited it into a duet.
I LOVE ZACH ADKINS!! But Derek has a sense of richness in his voice when he sings. Zach’s voice sounds more fragile. Like when I hear Zach’s voice I feel like it’s a twig. But when I hear Dereks I feel like I’m standing in front of a boulder.
Let me just say, I do prefer Derek as Dmitry, but even so, Zach is AMAZING as well, I saw the show live a week ago with Zach, and he kills it! And I think Zach hits that final note a little better than Derek :)
Fascinating. They really are vastly different. Personally, I perfer Derek's Dmitry cause he is less lighthearted and I like characters a little broken.
Sorry for the late reply! Yes, they are. Each actor brings a new side to Dmitry. It's also true that Derek is very rough and calloused, and Zach is more lighthearted. However, from what I have observed from Zach when I saw him live, he was just as broken. On one hand, Derek's Dima was really close to the animated portrayal because it showed how broken he was, and that feeling of being broken was the foundation for his tough-guy and secretive attitude. Zach on the other hand showed that youthful, positive energy, and he was more open about his feelings.
I’m obsessed with the soundtrack to this musical, but I’ve never seen it because I live in Japan. And when I found out that I wouldn’t be able to see Derek as Dmitry, I was really disappointed, but this made me really excited to see zach as Dmitry too. Besides, I can listen to Derek singing as Dmitry on the soundtrack as much as I want anyways.
Sorry for the late reply! Funny you mentioned that, because Zach sounded exactly like animated Dmitry from the film especially in "A Rumor in St. Petersburg"! I think Derek embodied the animated version more though, but Zach's take on the character was just as amazing and it gave us another side of Dima.
It’s hard when derek literally looks like cartoon dmitry and the original one. Ahhhhh.
lynlovescake i agree
lynlovescake Honestly though!
Yeah, and while both are great, I feel Derek really nails Dimitri's personality.
It’ll always be Derek Klena. I can’t picture anyone else as Dmitry, even if I tried!
Helen Lorraine omg yes
Same, I love him
Zach’s Dmitry seems more lighthearted and childlike. Not like he’s immature but he’s very energetic in a brighter sense.
Derek’s Dmitry seems more serious and solid - he’s a bit more confident and bold.

@@TheRoyalMisfitMess Nice, do you have a full copy of Zack Adkins as Dmitry?
@@quicksilver83 hey there! My apologies, I unfortunately don’t have a copy :((
@@TheRoyalMisfitMess Sorry for the late reply, it's fine btw.
just have to say Derek because he is OG lol
Derek will always be the perfect Dmitry (for me)
Zach is amazing, but I'll always love Derek as Dmitry more.
They both give off very different versions of the character. I prefer Derek’s version better
I saw Zach as Dmitry back in October! It was a Sunday matinee and Zach was still the understudy, but he was absolutely AMAZING, one of my favorite actors in the show.
I haven't seen the show live yet, but I heard he's incredible! He was indeed the best actor to take over for Derek!
I feel like I’m the only one that might prefer Zach. Derek is amazing but Zach is such a goofball and so charming love him.
I like Zach too. He's amazing.
Derek will always be the original Dmitry and one of the best!
I officially need this as a duet
Completely agree with you!
Nadine Chui YES YES YES YESSS
Both are amazing! I really like the lighter and more mischievous tone Zach brings as Dmitry :)
I saw Zach as Dima a week ago, and he was really good! His Dmitry is very different from Derek's which is amazing!
Derek’s hand motions and gestures are just perfectly spot on every time. He’s so authentic and he’s never exaggerating with an overload of body gestures!! And he’s a very good vocalist too, of course.
I find it very hard for anyone to play the part better than him.
Derek! Why did he have to leave! 😢
I honestly enjoy Zach a lot! Derek is amazing, but Zach just seems like he’s having so much fun with it!
Zach is who I'll choose in here since Dmitry is a bit playful. And he sounded so playful in here. But I also adore Derek. I mean, who doesn't?!
Wow this is amazing💕💕💕 both are good, but if I have to choose, I will say Derek, bc idk, but I think I feel more things when I listen him, I really feel he’s showing us a beautiful petersburg(? Xd
Thank you very much! Glad you liked the video 😄!
derek shall never be replaced
Zach was my Demitri and wow oh wow, how I love him:) love the original as well, what a rich tone, but Zach is my Demy :)
Abigail Philpott same here!!!
Derek forever and always

TheRoyalMisfitMess very true!
Keira Williams very well put.
It's interesting how people can hear the same performances in such different ways. For me, Zach's voice is richer. There is a gravity to it that I just don't hear in Derek's voice.

Now we need one with Derek, Zach and Cody
Sorry for the late reply! I've been trying to find clips of Cody ever since he started playing Dima, but I still haven't found anything. It's also gonna be hard since the show closed a few days ago and there's now a lack of source materials. 😞
TheRoyalMisfitMess all good! It’s so sad that it’s finished on Broadway for good :(
I love how in the description, you specifically say that you didn’t make this to compare the two, but literally everyone in the comments is writing an essay as to why they prefer one over the other, as if you asked them to.

Derek, the original guy.
UUUUUGGHHHH not gonna choose because they are both so good.

Derek has the VOICE but Zach has the PERSONALITY OF DMITRI
It’ll always be Derek for me!
Derek foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Flawless
Both are exceptional tenors but if you listen them carefully you can tell that Zach's voice is more lighter, while Derek's is more dark.
I love two (2) men.
but real talk thank you for making this I didn't know I needed this in my life, especially the parts where you edited it into a duet.
Sorry for the late reply! Thank you so much! I really wish there was a chance we could get them to sing the song together.
If I had to pick one.........DEREK KLENA ALL THE WAY
What if they sang it side by side like from when you did “world burn” with the 2 reginas
Zachs dmitry is sweeter and more human in some sense but dereks voice is so strong and forceful so they both have merits just depends on what u prefer
Let me just say, I do prefer Derek as Dmitry, but even so, Zach is AMAZING as well, I saw the show live a week ago with Zach, and he kills it! And I think Zach hits that final note a little better than Derek :)
Sorry late reply! Zach changes up his ending sometimes and it's honestly one of the best things about his Dmitry!
DEREK KLENA ALL THE WAY!!!❤️

I think Derek embodied the animated version more though, but Zach's take on the character was just as amazing and it gave us another side of Dima.
Both are good and talented but i prefer Derek
Zach is derek’s understudy, right? Why wasn’t he the one who played dimitry when derek left?
he did! i actually got to see him play dmitry in 2018. he was wonderful!
@@TheRoyalMisfitMess oh but then how did cody came into the picture?
I’m biased towards Zach cause I saw him in the role two weeks ago in New York but they are both excellent performers 😊😊
Derek Klena all the way
I prefer zach probably because he is who I saw in september. Love love Derek's voice but Zach is my Dima
derek’s voice is more powerfully witch makes him more like Dimitri
Derek wins for me!
Derek is way better there are just no words for him.
Derek is performing the song with a little edge that it needs. Zach is performing this way too innocent and that's not the character...
We prefer Derek as Dyma...but he didn’t :( and he leave the project 💔🥴
