I know.a guy who lives in a tent. The guy is x-forces and we talk about ham radio. the guy is a genius and deserves so much more in life. He in passing told me about potentially going to visit you in ealing! now i gather that was many moons ago! *super moons included* .. I told him you're in staines now. i doubt he will actually visit (given his circumstances) but I am going to give him a dh808 or something similar. he will love it.

That Sony ICF-2001D has some of arguably the very best synchronous detection to this day. It's selectively and sensitivity makes it still one of the very best shortwave portables ever manufactured.
So much so, that when it was released it was the radio of choice for foreign spies to tune into numbers stations.
    This one is a sleeper, and a keeper.👍 (2E0HVU).

I would love that old multi band radio, reminds me off when I was younger. Sit up in the night listening to anything the radio would pick up. I do believe I did listen to Beacon Radio (west midlands) and the (shush) police.

Loving the old kit. The FT-290R, my first radio back in 1985. Boy, I loved that. 2.5Watts on SSB into a 9 crossed Tonna on the side of my parents' house, I worked so many stations.

The R1000 maybe working normally. Top Band and everything below 2MHz is on the MW ANT long wire connector. That range is not available via the SO 239. A quirk of the design. Nice receivers. I have on I bought second hand at a rally in the 80s. Dave G8UPO.

What a wonderful trip down memory lane that was. My first real communications receiver was the R1000 (bought from ARE) . I also had the AR2001, later owned both the Icom R71 and after that, a JRC NRD545. 73 to you all from M7CUN.

Hey Martin, I had a clone of the Hira,it was amazing (all I could afford back in 1983) as luck would have it I lived about a mile from GB3MH (when it was in Malvern) so I could hear the local repeater along with the local police occasionally.
If I recall it was branded Icon, similar to a much more respectable radio manufacturer, I don’t suppose they were too happy about that. .
Thanks for reminding me of a time before my G1 license.

Seeing all this lovely kit is making me happy though I do feel a bit sad that the old hollow state valve kit isn’t as desirable now. I have a heathkit HW101 and a Swan 350C as my main SSB rigs and a heathkit DX100u for AM. My yaesu FT767gx with all the modules and ctcss is my backup HF rig and main VHF.

That Hira is possibly the same receiver I had in the early to mid 80's. If I remember correctly it did hf, airband, 2m and 154mhz and we all know What you could pick up there. Anyway seeing that brought back memories. Talking about JRC's I bought a NRD545 and an AOR 5100 from Martin Lynch back in 2000' sadly they are gone now as trade ins. 😕 loved those two recievers. Also thanks I received the Morse paddle I bought today. Steve MM0SGQ

I’d love to pop in - I’d be kind a kid in a candy store! And broke too
The old radios though - do they really have a place in the modern era with the likes of that ft891 at £500?
What’s their purpose other than nostalgia?
The Icom 7300 just hammer’s their resale values
Saw a Kenwood Ts480 there awesome rig too sat or HX?
