Will the same proportional concept work into figuring out how certain body parts overlap for figure drawing?

The ideas for proportions work with any object that we're drawing. The human figure has a distinct proportion of the head height dividing into the rest of the height of the body. The most important concepts to understand for figure drawing is proportion and foreshortening.

@@KevinMcCainStudios I have been learning more about forshorting, proportions, and perspective in figure drawing but a few things I am still confused about. For perspective when drawing the figure does each unit of proportions have to go to a vanishing point or multiple vanishing points? What about difficult poses such as running or laying down how do you know what limb is coming towards or and away from the viewer? How about when if a person is doing a superman pose. How do I tell which limb is going to what vanishing points and how to forshorting them correctly?

Hello Katie, So you could talk about every movement of the limb and and twist of the trunk would have different vanishing points and you could break it down in a very advanced exercise of perspective. Simplicity is always the best way to go. If you have a extreme perspective view people most artists would build the basic block or box the figure would fit in and then track the landmarks on the body, like the head, armpit, navel, center of the body, middle of the knee and feet as a basic. The easiest way to deal with the figure when starting out is breaking the body down into cylinders. The arm is just 2 cylinders with a hinged joint. Take a roll of paper towels and rotate it into different foreshortened views. As you get used to drawing foreshortened cylinders it will be much easier to draw as you break down the trunk and limbs into cylinders. check out the book Jeno Barcsay, Anatomy for the Artist has some great examples of foreshortening the figure.
