Love the video. My experience is very simmilar to yours, I was such a werewolf guy, play a lot in college, but since I discover Blood on The Clocktower I havent play a single werewolf game. To be fair I was more a fan of One Night Ultimate Werewolf, wich is a game that already fix some of the issues of normal Werewolf (player elimination, more unique roles, etc). The only part that I disagree is the end. I still play other social deduction games depending of the situation, like less then 8 people, not enough time for a full game, or more then 21 people. For example Werewolf has the advantage of basiclly being able to play with a infinity number of people as we often did in college with the freshman. Deception: muerder in Hong Kong, its not only faster but combine the genre with the "guess the word based on clues" genre wich is a change of pace that I like a lot (still prefer BOTC) Edit: In the grimm example you gave at 18:34 you forgot to add the +2 outisiders, and should have only be one minion with 8 players. You probably know this and it is just an example, but idk maybe someone could got confuse
DISCLAIMER: I noticed that in the upload, the introduction to this video has a minor audio sync issue. It's not terrible but it is noticeable, sorry about that. After the introduction, this issue goes away. Thanks!
First time viewer and new subscriber here, and it was the bit you said at the end about dreaming about BotC that made me decide to comment! Late last year, I got a particularly bad bout of flu, and it sent my ADHD into overdrive so much that I slept something like 4 hours in 3 days combined, and most of that overdrive was hypothetical BotC scenarios, but flying around my head at the speed of light and keeping me awake, so not quite dreams about it, but involuntary waking "dreams?" Anyway, great video, loved how much you love this game, same as me! If you ever want to play some time, let me know!
The major thing BotCT as a game solves is that it makes good use of dead players. It makes the game almost always enjoyable to play for the whole game, regardless of when you die. It truly fixes the worst part of almost all the other social deduction games.
I always love seeing the spark in a new player's eyes when they die and they ask if I am about to reveal their role and when I say no and that they can continue participating, their eyes light up and they always get excited.
i do have 2 corections 1 you cant die the first night the demon first kills night 2 also ravenkeeper dies when they are killed by demon they wouldnt be able to be hung the next game
I certainly see how BotC can be superior to Avalon, but seriously talking about Avalon drawbacks with the player count of just 5 player while BoardGameGeek clearly states you need 7-8 players for a good game is a bit dishonest. Other than that, fully agree, great review!
No, even Blood on the Clocktower creator admitted that it wasn't perfect, and scripts were inherently imbalanced, some more than others. Plenty of times people get voted off due to vibes, at early parts of the game in particular.
I’ve found this happens more so when you’re playing with a group that doesn’t know each other that well. Which is definitely the case when you’re just joining random servers with different people everytime. That’s one of the reasons I don’t play with random people very often, and instead continue to stick with my consistent group, even online. Maybe that could be considered a flaw? I’m not sure, that’s up for each person to decide.
@@115-Gaming Not a flaw from my perspective. I think most of the time, it's players being chaotic or sometimes, a meta develops if you play with the same people online. "X is always evil so lets just execute them now" *All hands go up immediately.
Much agreed. I initially had a 5 minute intro! 😬 waaaay too long. So I went back and cut it down to 2 minutes, it was the best I could do. I just wrote out a lot more in my script for this video and I didn’t quite realize how long it would be until the initial cut was 45 minutes long. This is the MUCH trimmed down version, believe me.
There is no problem with mafia. Theres dozens of roles you can interchange to your liking. Player elimination is not a problem, thats just your preference. My group has no problem with player eliminations You are right though, Clocktower is much more interesting but its MUCH more involved, and I'd argue it gets too confusing
I think I’ve just seemed to experience the same issues consistently with multiple groups throughout the years when it comes to Mafia/Werewolf. But I know that there are groups out there that have no issue with any of the things I’ve experienced!
Man, I've never seen someone hate social deduction games this much. You seem to prefer social subterfuge to the deduction part. It's clear you don't like that part of the game and so this review is super hard to parse.
That's fair, to head this off, my initial cut of this video was much longer, and detailed my history with the many social deduction games I've played, what I loved about them, but why I eventually fell out of love with them (the games, not the genre). Unfortunately, the video was just initially way too long (at 45 minutes) and so I cut the video in half by length to make the video more accessible and less rambly and to get the main points about BotC faster. I think that has led to the video seeming like I hate social deduction games, I don't! I love them, and loving them for so many years is why I feel BotC is the one I enjoy the most. I'd still play Mafia/Werewolf if my group preferred it. I hope that makes sense :)
That wasn’t my take at all. It sounds like he loves social deduction, but BoTC just made the the other games look weak by comparison. He’s spot on. Played three games of BoTC, and am giving away a stack of competitors games now. Awesome video. BoTC has me hooked. Expansions are insta-buy even though the game ships with three games in the box already. Light enough to play with Grandma. Heavy enough to have multiple podcasts dedicated to just this game, discussing the strategy.
Whut. What do you even mean? Define the distinction you make between « social deduction » and « social subterfuge » (which is not an actual concept used and known, so you can’t throw it around so carelessly), otherwise your comment is impossible to understand.
BOTC should honestly become a subgenre of social deduction. Where the social and deduction parts are equal. And both teams are offered a fair chance.

This is such a well-done introduction to BOTC, and more importantly a hell of an advertisement for the game!

Absolutely! I am always down to play. And stay tuned because I'm in the process of writing a new series on BotC advice and strategy :)
@@115-Gaming I should do one of those, but called "How NOT To Play As..." because I do some pretty wacky plays 😅 they do pay off though! Sometimes...

That’s totally fair. Although because I played Resistance/Avalon with my family… the 5 player count is what I played with the most.

If you play BoTC online, you'll find that executions often happen for no reason or evidence.
