I bought my 5d classic in July of 2023, and I like it. A lot. But that's not why I'm writing this comment. No. I'm commenting because this video took me home. I grew up in a Norman Rockwell painting, a small Maple-lined-street village in Michigan where our neighbor Bud Gilmour delivered our milk, where we played in the woods and fields and rode our bikes until the streetlights came on and we had to go inside for the night. Where I would lie on my back in the tick-free tall grass to watch the summertime clouds drift and dance and make bunnies and lions and... I like my 5d very much. But you took me home, to a distant time and place that is the very core of who I am, all these decades hence. And I'm grateful. Thank you Chris.

Nice video. I bought the D30 when it first came out, then the 10D, then the 5D in 2005. I stopped there because it just felt like the right one for me. It still does nearly 20 years later. Wishing you success.

I purchased the 5D new in 2005 with kit 24-105L for over $3000 , still have it. I recently purchased 2 more 5D bodies for $30 each in mint condition. Time may have changed the cost but it didn't change a great camera.

Agree it is such a great camera for its simplicity and image quality. Something about not seeing the image on the back screen due to its low resolution and then the surprise you get when you see the photo result on a monitor. Also have the 6D and that is a great camera too (with close but not same colour as 5D Classic) and few extra features for those times you need to get the shot.

    I had the Canon 1000D, Canon 30D, Canon 100D
I sold all of them but after a while I felt like missing the Canon vibes so I bought the 20D
And after all these years I do believe that there is nothing that can beat the Canon,s Color Style
I do hope to find a good used 5D because its a legendary camera
Here in Germany it’s really hard to find a one with a good shape

Forced myself to consolidate gear as too many options (batteries, chargers, lenses, adapters, filters, flashes...) were becoming an impediment to the process of just getting out and doing some shooting. Ditched my 5D, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, Lumix G85, etc. I will miss the 5D classic the most. It brings me pain to see any of my old shots with it. The 5D classic renders files so good it's almost stupid. One day, maybe when my kids are older and out of the house and there's more time for me, I'll be able to find a copy as nice as the one I sold. Such a fabulous camera that delivered wow routinely.

  • @jimmay8627

    What a pleasant video.
I bought my 5D at launch in August 2005, going straight from 35mm to digital with no "crop" step. I kept shooting the way I did on my film camera - trying to get it right in camera instead of post (though I did shoot RAW to have that option). I even purchased the Ee-S focusing screen for it, to make manual focus easier as modern cams lack the old focusing aids like split prisms etc..
Having shot that way for so long, I still tend to shoot like that with my Panasonic G9, though I will now shoot more shots now that the card could hold over a thousand of them.
And now that one of the radioactive 50mm Takumars has fallen into my hands and I've caught the vintage lens bug, I've found myself going back to the 5D as well. I was going to declutter the old fella, but reconsidered when I saw that the 5D had itself reached vintage status, and the EF mount is by far the best for adapting to other mounts.

Damn I don’t have a memory like this with a certain camera body being that I’m new to photography but last year my Gf and I took a trip to CDMX (amazing city btw) and I took a pic of this pay phone in the neighborhood of Condesa and man it brought me back to my childhood no doubt. I shot it with ilford HP5 and when I got my scans back I was instantly transported to the time when I would call my mom to pick me up from the movies from a pay phone. Much simpler simpler times then. She trusted me to call her. I had 50 cents to make the call. It was so nice back then. She’s gone from this world but that photos takes me there every time I see it.

Very cool. It was the camera with which I left film photography. I had gone as far as I wanted in film, having learned photography in 1980 in my senior year (we all learned on old Pentax 35mm cameras which was the norm then). My last medium format film cameras was a Pentax 645nII, a beautiful and high-tech beast of the era. My other favorite was a Mamiya 1000s with an 80mm f1.9 lens. I sold them all for the Canon 5D. I still own three 5D cameras--can't give them up. I have paired one with a Sigma 50mm f1.4 lens. The old meets the new. Anyway, good video.

I've spent probably months fantasizing about upgrading my a6000 to an a6700 or an a7c to match the new Sigma Art lens I just bought. Yesterday I saw a Canon 5D and a 17-40mm L lens on facebook marketplace for cheap and I felt compelled to buy it, so I am. This video made me nostalgic for a camera and an experience I've never felt before, but this video got me excited for an almost 20 year old camera and a whole untapped amount of new experiences to feel.

The 5D was my first Canon. I got it when already was a "classic" in 2014. Nice color output. You have to learn to walk around it's corks because camera's technology was different back then. I don't see it as a negative thing, I take it more like a challenge, it makes you think and slow you down -- in a good way -- so you can enjoy more the process. Great review, Chris.

I learned everything I know about photography with this camera. My first street photograph, first long exposure photograph, first paid photo shoot. Broke the back screen and treated it like a film camera. It was paired with a Helios 55 f2. Bought another one in 2021 and that was paired with a petzval lens. Now I’m contemplating on whether I should buy a a7s mki or the 5dc. Leaning towards the 5dc but the focus peaking on the a7s is a plus. I highly recommend the 5dc. The shutter is crisp!

I've not used the original 5D, but I've got a mkii, as the old adage goes, it's not what you've got but what you do with it. As an experienced photographer, I would be happy to take on an inexperienced photographer with the latest Hassleblad and be quite sure I would get a better image. As the old saying goes, it's not what you've got, it's what you do with it. As an owner of both the 5Dmkii and the mkiv, I'm more than aware of the exceptional image quality that they can achieve, thank you for keeping these incredible cameras alive

I understand, but I somewhat disagree with a little of what you said.
I have used many cameras over the years, starting from the 300D all the way to mirrorless of today. I have been lucky to use a lot of expensive equipment and lenses.
I bought myself a 5D Classic a few years back and its almost the perfect camera for landscapes and portraits for me. I would struggle with sports and wildlife, and anything that moves fast, but generally its fantastic at what it does. I have a range of lenses from the cheaper nifty 50 through to some expensive L glass.
The only two complaints I have are that only the middle auto focus point is consistently tact sharp, where the other ones can sometimes miss, and that I wish I had just a couple more megapixels on occasion - just 4-6 more maybe? When I crop sometimes I know I am starting with only 12 and if I want a larger print this can cause issues. Other than that, I love how analogue it feels to me, rather than EVFs, touch screens focusing etc. I feel I have to work for the shot rather than relying on the camera so much.
The thing I love most though is the colours from the 5D classic. I have not yet found a camera that matches the colours I enjoy so much. I adore this sensor.
It is obviously personal choice, but as I am a slower paced photographer and not shooting off 1000s a photos each time I go out, maybe the 5D suits me more that it does you? I would recommend anyone starting photography as a hobby to pick up a 5D classic, and maybe a 35, 40 or 50mm lens, and just learn by doing.
All that said, I love the story telling and the video mate.

Megapixels too. I love that camera also :)
