Tbh I'd recommend playing Fusion then playing Dread as Fusion is Metroid 4 and Dread is Metroid 5 - i.e. a direct sequel. Then you can take a break from Metroid and return with Prime and revisit the remakes etc.
This was exactly how I felt after playing super metroid for the first time a couple of years ago. I just couldn't stop gushing about it and being amazed at how interesting and fun it is to play. It was all I could think about for days... I've since replayed the game countless times and it is definitely one of my favourite games of all time and made me a full on Metroidvania fan
I think breaks are good esp for not feeling saturated but I agree with other comments, cant reccommend enough Dread. If you loved super you will like Dread a lot. I think it balances the strengths of Fusion and Super very well. While Super is still my favorite in the series I have many good things to say for Dread. Glad the series is being so loved!!!!!!
Watching you play Metroid on the plays channel is what got me to finally stop procrastinating trying the series for myself which I had been wanting to do since Dread came out. I enjoyed Metroid 1 and 2 significantly more than I thought I would but Super Metroid absolutely captivated me. The controls were still a little too loose feeling for my liking but every other aspect of that game was basically perfect for me. That being said, I’ve noticed it’s harder for people to go back to if they’ve play later games like the remakes or Dread so I wouldn’t mind seeing a remake of Super sometime down the line. But as it is now I think Super is a great introduction to Metroid for people who have never played it before and I highly recommend everyone try it!
I finally played Super Metroid myself for the first time once the streams were about to start. I had previously played Zero Mission, the Prime games, and Dread; and Super held up really well. I missed some QoL improvements that were in the later installments, but it was still a lot of fun. Man, I can't wait for you to play Dread someday. I think it's my favorite in the series, and it'd be a joy to see you react to some of the stuff in that one .
The recent release of Zero Mission on NSO inspired me to finally play Super. I have some nitpicks, but it was great overall. What surprised me the most was the feeling of pure exploration. There were no objective markers, nor obvious waypoints. It felt like _my_ journey. When I found items like the X-Ray Scope, it was something _I_ earned, not something the game just gave to me. That’s a feeling I rarely (if ever) experience in other games. I’m very glad I finally played it
I have played Super Metroid several times and it is easily my favourite SNES game. I didn't know half the tricks that chat told you when playing. My mind was blown.
I cannot wait for you to play metroid dread! All of the mainline metroids are great and I hope you continue through with them all. Also the secret beam effects, they're shown in the main menu demo! There's also another one called crystal flash, which you can convert your ammo into health when at low health.
As someone from a newer generation (gen z) I love super metroid. From the way it looked, to the secret moves you have all game and just all about was an amazing way for me to be introduced to the metroid series and the metroidvania type games (currently playing hollow knight.) I think that for a game before i was even born 😂 I think it's easily in my top 10 favorite games.
Agreed. I really, _really_ liked the ending of Super Metroid, the plot twist with the final boss. Super cool. For a game that came out thirty entire years ago (god I'm old and I hate the beginning of this sentence), it still, like you said, holds up and plays well even to this day.
Have you considered playing Zero Mission and Samus Returns? They are both remakes for Metroid 1 and 2 respectively and are pretty good reimagining of the originals. And as for doing a randomizer, I recommend playing a rando of a game you are most familiar with, in your case it should be Earthbound. That's not to say you shouldn't try playing a Super Metroid randomizer or another rando eventually, I actually find playing one a good way to learn new things about a game and familiarize locations. But it's best to start with a game you already know well.
I played through Super Metroid myself for the first time ever last year. Loved every second of it and constantly was thinking to myself how well it aged.
Super Metroid is the best single player games I’ve ever played, along with Majora’s Mask, Little King’s Story and well, some of the other Metroid games!
If you want the authentic Metroid series evolution experience... then after you finish Metroid Fusion wait 19 years before you play Metroid Dread. (Don't actually do this) I mostly just wanted to express that I just realized that Metroid 5 (2021) released NINETEEN YEARS after Metroid 4 (2002). I am old, and WOW that was a long time.
I beat super Metroid 100% 3 times before learning about the special beam combos. Unfortunately, they aren’t that useful from what I remember, but thankfully the prime games (well, prime 1 really) fix that and make them more obvious.
Although SNES had many all time classics that have stood the test of time, Super Metroid just has such an incredible atmosphere and cinematic element to it that feels so special to experience. Feels like everyone should experience it if they have any interest in the genre. The ending really hits so well and really is the cherry on top. It would still be great to see what you remember of Fusion and the ways it flips some conventions from previous Metroid games. I definitely think it's important to play before Dread/Metroid 5 as there are important references to Fusion. Maybe remakes like Zero Mission and Samus Returns are off the table, but they feel pretty new and have new content if you wanted to try them after Fusion before going into Dread. There's plenty of time before Prime 4 comes out, they might still fully remaster 2 and 3 like 1 so revisiting those games later would make more sense.
Super Metroid is definitely a classic icon for a reason & I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was before my time but I knew someone with a SNES when I played it. However, I cannot wait for you to play my childhood favorite, Metroid Prime! Whenever that day comes that is! 😁
"if you weren't as thorouuuuugh......" i think the word you're looking for is "stubborn." If you werent as stubborn trying to do things you clearly were supposed to wait for an upgrade for, it would be quicker. :p
Having finished Super it would be really good I'd you wanted to come back to it to check out AM2R. The community has by this point rebuilt the game from the ground up. Otherwise diving into Zero Mission would be good for adjusting to the modern controls for Fusion. Plus Zero has more of that sweet sweet lore for the series.
As I've said elsewhere, I didn't play any Nintendo games till 2008 but really liked the original NES Metroid; I never could get into this one, but your playthrough has made me appreciate it more. Mostly because it felt like organic exploration whereas most playthroughs are unwatchable as they're people who already know the game well sequence breaking so the narrative is lost.
Super Metroid is the only Metroid game I've beaten, and only one of three Metroid games I've played, with Prime and Samus Returns being the other two. It is without a doubt my favourite SNES game, and probably my favourite game to have come out before I was born. At some point I will attempt to blast my way through the other games as well. Saw NintendoCapriSun's Fusion run and that one looked great.
I know you're most interested in the real-world history and development of games and their series and thus would be inclined to pursue Prime next because of its chronological existence in the series. But I really suggest looking at Dread first because it's a direct sequel to Fusion. To maybe put this into some other terms you might understand better: Imagine you've just finished _Super Mario Bros 3._ Well, even though there's quite a development gap and even the fact that it's on a new console, _Super Mario World_ is clearly the next game in the series and follows the core foundational principals of the game. But instead of playing that, you decide that you're actually going to play all of the currently released entries in the _Mario Kart_ series first. Yes, they're both Mario. Yes, they share a lot of design principals, character designs, themes, and general aesthetics. But _Mario Kart_ is still its own thing and just sorta runs parallel to the main series. If you're looking to play the core Mario series, you'd really be best off setting those to the side in favor of the mainline sequel. Metroid Prime is the _Mario Kart_ of the Metroid series. Wildly popular. Delightfully fun. Preferred by many over the mainline games because of their differences. But really best considered to be its own parallel series of games.
It's funny how things turned out. Back when they were still being developed, a lot of people thought that Metroid Prime would turn out to be just a trend-chasing fps and counted on Fusion to be the true Metroid experience, but when they released it turned out that Prime was the real successor to Super all along and Fusion was the radical departure.
Tbh I'd recommend playing Fusion then playing Dread as Fusion is Metroid 4 and Dread is Metroid 5 - i.e. a direct sequel. Then you can take a break from Metroid and return with Prime and revisit the remakes etc.
He said on the stream that he's stopping at fusion for now to take a break and then he'll decide what he does after that
Super Metroid’s soundtrack is so iconic too. Red Brinstar theme is one of the best ambient tracks in gaming history
If you like to have moves from the beginning but learn about them only later in game, you should play „Tunic“ blind. 😊

Stephen finally knows what we have known for decades
I played through Super Metroid myself for the first time ever last year. Loved every second of it and constantly was thinking to myself how well it aged.
SM is an all time classic. Love it. First beat it in 2008 on Wii Virtual Console and 100% it in 2020. So good!
Super Metroid is the best single player games I’ve ever played, along with Majora’s Mask, Little King’s Story and well, some of the other Metroid games!

Super metroid was my first metroid cause I played it on the snes classic and it's honestly one of my favorite games of all time
I love Super Metroid! One of my favorite games of all time

Please play until Dread. It's absolutely incredible as well. It's up there with Super Metroid for me.
Fusion was my first Metroid, I know it gets hate but I love it.
FUSION
I haven't had new vods since June 19th. Is that right?

good game algorithm comment
It is, but I think you will warmly welcome the quality of life changes and quicker, snappier controls of the newer games!!
Spoiler:
6:48 just that makes the linearity of Fusion so baffling
It's funny how things turned out. Other M's still an option. It's fun even if the plot is subpar. Needed more time to refine that bit.
NOOOOO PLEASE STEPHEN YOU HAVE TO PLAY DREAD! You can't stop at Fusion when you're so close to the end 😭😭😭
It's kind of a big deal
