China - Surveillance state or way of the future? | DW Documentary

  • China is building a huge digital surveillance system. The state collects massive amounts of data from willing citizens: the benefits are practical, and people who play by the rules are rewarded.
Critics call it "the most ambitious Orwellian project in human history." China's digital surveillance system involves massive amounts of data being gathered by the state. In the so-called "brain" of Shanghai, for example, authorities have an eye on everything. On huge screens, they can switch to any of the approximately one million cameras, to find out who’s falling asleep behind the wheel, or littering, or not following Coronavirus regulations. "We want people to feel good here, to feel that the city is very safe," says Sheng Dandan, who helped design the "brain." Surveys suggest that most Chinese citizens are inclined to see benefits as opposed to risks: if algorithms can identify every citizen by their face, speech and even the way they walk, those breaking the law or behaving badly will have no chance. It’s incredibly convenient: a smartphone can be used to accomplish just about any task, and playing by the rules leads to online discounts thanks to a social rating system.
That's what makes Big Data so attractive, and not just in China. But where does the required data come from? Who owns it, and who is allowed to use it? The choice facing the Western world is whether to engage with such technology at the expense of social values, or ignore it, allowing others around the world to set the rules.

I don't know what DW asked the Yu family to do, but his phone showed the screen for Sesame score, by Alibaba, only your activity within their apps are assigned a score for rewards, 550 sesame reward points and up.
24:23 what the docu said about how high score people can skip security is physically impossible.
In China xray machines are all placed at the entrance of the station, which means no one knows who you are, Metro cards are also not tied to your ID, any tourist can buy one and put money in it to use it.
So this documentary is being deliberately dishonest, which is a truly scary thought, considering you and many others have trust in media like DW that manipulates your views and some times outright lies.

Also all the stuff you said like Jan 6th and anti-vaxxers are due to older out of touch white people falling victim to con artists like Donald Trump, Fox News and far right content on Facebook... which yeah is destroying the US from the inside, but you can't really equate it with how if you say a fact or bring up something that upsets the CCP in China you're highly likely to be imprisoned and show up on TV a few month's later reading an apology letter to the Chinese people. The main issue is the combination of a surveillance state + a government that is likely to arrest you for stating facts, or wearing a shirt with Winnie-the-Pooh on it.

I used to live in China, both online payment and surveillance cameras are very convenient, you only need to carry a mobile phone, you can do anything, buy anything, go anywhere, reduce the risk of cash and card loss, as for the camera, there may be criminals and thieves in any country, the camera can quickly find the criminal suspects, speed up the time to solve the case. And some elderly people are easy to get lost, the camera can quickly find them, even for their own home, people are also willing to install a camera, because if you work in a far place, you can see the situation at home at any time, see the family, are very convenient.

I live alone so, I don't really see how things are. Even in their car, they were interacting more with the internet than between them. I bet they do it in bed together, and then go to sleep without really talking to each other. If i had a companion and kids around, you bet that i'd try to make things differently. When we go visit my parents, nobody is allowed to carry their mobile phones at the table or in the living room. There's a small basket at the entrance, we leave it there. I mean... I can answer for you. Being completely alone yet online is not the same as having family and friends around and being online. I still engage in social interaction, I still play with my brother irl. Oftentimes actually the stuff I find when I'm scrolling online (like memes), I do so to show to my brother, otherwise it's not as fun or interesting (the funniest stuff are when they're shared with others). It's not like my family's "fallen apart" just because me and my brother scroll on tik tok or because my brother plays roblox and my parents talk to family friends on facebook. Like, we still all speak to each other and go on trips like this summer we went to Alton Towers (theme park in the UK)
I feel like people who act as if technology is some social ill or act as if human interaction has died because they think people somehow can't meter their own use of technology are the exact types of people who would become internet addicts or can't meter their internet use. Normal, well-adjusted people can. It's not the end of the world bud

The protection of personal privacy in China is a controversial issue in the world! I personally believe that this is the result of technological progress, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages! Eliminate crime and various illegal activities! I personally support setting up monitoring facilities in public infrastructure!

my friend worked at a pool, without the company's knowledge, he got paid directly by customers and kept them money for himself; after almost half a year he quit his job as a swimming instructor and left the pool establishment. a few people have had their subscriptions canceled as they never got them registered and this guy actually skimmed the money. NOW a few months later, a policeman called him and told him that he's been waited for at his house etc etc, in fact that policemen was a customer and he illegally accessed the government citizen database to find out about this guy, his address, etc, to extort him on the money he paid for the courses at the pool. so again what my friend did is not ok, but the pool management is the subject that is affected, the customers have to go the the pool to get their money back and the pool management must address police on my friend. in this case a policemen privately and illegally accessed the database and went privately, called stalked my friend and extort him on his money. that what citizen databases are subjected to.

Dunno, China's cross-referenced databases, facial recognition, AI, and even personality-detection algorithms, censorship and 'ratings' etc. still seem wa-ay ahead of us. And yeah, the West might be headed there (covertly or otherwise). But they've still got a long way to go, so we still have opportunities to push back and impose 'limits' (if we can just get offa our lazy azzes).

It’s literally not even covertly, it tells you in the terms of use whenever you’re downloading apps, accessing webpages and etc…
And if that wasn’t enough Edward Snowden put his ass on the line by drawing more attention to it and people still didn’t and still don’t care…lol

@@LowenKM The US is a decade ahead in mass surveillance as Snowden has revealed. US govt spying over its own people is so advanced now that the CIA can track the movement of people by using routers and wifi signals as radar, even if the devices you use don't have a GPS/location system.
It's the big reason why Snowden is still a top target for the US govt.

I wouldn’t want my credit rating to take a hit either. It’s the ultimate form of coercion. You don’t even have to throw the disloyal troublemaker into the gulag - you can achieve much more effective compliance by tightening the noose more slowly and gently.

Or may be they are more satisfied with their government than their western counterparts. You people have to understand China was in abject poverty 30 years ago. From there they are now on the threshold of becoming the largest economy of the world. Why should then they be cross with their government? They are living a better life now than their predecessors.

This is a thing that can cut both ways I think. I believe a country is ultimately about the people. So surely the overall well being of people is important. But, deploy such tech and regulations ever more widely for a number of generations and you will end up with people who can hardly function unless they are in front of a camera and being told by their phone what to do. How can that be in the interest of the people? And if it's not good for the people, then how can it be good for the country?
