I stumbled into making a comic a few years ago. My husband was diagnosed with cancer and during his surgery and treatment, I had a ton of nervous energy. So I grabbed a cheap sketchbook and just started drawing. Looking back, I can see the growth of my ability as the comic progresses. It begins with circles for heads on sticks and by the end the characters (my family and the medical team in charge of my husband's care) have bodies and full faces. But using as tool for experimentation and learning to quickly and affordably try new things is such a great idea. Thank you for this video. I definitely see mini comics in my future now.

I'm an artist, but I'm not very good at writing, so what I like to do is take scenes from books/series and draw them in about three panels. It's good practice and also very fun!
Seeing those mini comics actually gave me so much hope. I am wanting to do manga myself but seeing that reminded me just how much it matters just to make "something". It's better to make something than have anxiety and make nothing. Tbh it kinda brought me back to how I started reading comics. Long before picking up manga and having a lifelong obsession with it I would always pick up Archie comics at the store and cut out Pearls Before Swine and and Calvin and Hobbes comics. I actually still have a lot of tuem hung on my walls. It's kinda the notion of getting it out of my head that something needs to be long to be worth it. Heck one of my favorite manga is actually super short, Voynich Hotel from Dowman Seiman is such a treat and yet it's these short episodic adventures pretty much the whole way through. It feels good to really think about how broad of a thing comics can be. Also makes it make a lot more sense why manga publishers tend to have up and coming mangaka submit one shots first. I tend to get overwhelmed by the fact that I usually have many chapters written out and thus the workload that entails, but the thing is to focus on the first chapter. Don't even worry about the others until it's done, it's fine to write stuff but don't worry about adapting it into drawing form until I have the previous chapter done. You are going on the list of people to send my work to once I have something, and this is the first video I have seen from you lol.
This is absolutely what i needed. I've been working on my own story while drawing out the characters and writing the first rough chapters of my comic for a while now, i knew where the story was headed. But i wasn't sure how i was going to approach it. Without a doubt i WILL be starting my first mini comic as soon as possible. Thank you soo much for the video!!!.
I’ve been wanting to start making comics for a little while now as a way to tell the stories of my oc’s & I went into this video planning to skim through & get some basic tips, but I ended up watching the entire video since you explain everything so well & the comics you showed really inspired me. Thank you so much for this!
I had no idea that mini comics were even a thing 😱 I’ve been interested in cartoons my entire life. My dad is an artist, and mostly does cartoon styles drawings/paintings. I’ve always struggled as an artist. I’ve tried drawing and painting, and always struggled finding my own style...but lately I’ve been drawing more cartoons, and it seems to come to me more naturally than the other things I’ve tried. I definitely want to try drawing up some mini comics now!
So, my partner and I have been plotting out this big graphic novel series so a while. But neither of us have the skill level to draw it yet. But this inspired me to get started on something to get us there. So thank you!
First, I have to say that this is amazing advice for beginners who have lots of ideas in their head, but is daunted when facing the paper. Remind them to start small, tiny small. Crawl before you walk or run. Second, I randomly found you recommended to me on my youtube feed. Probably one of the few times youtube has actually recommend a video that was useful and not fluff. Third, checked out your videos and found you to be grinding it out for 9 years. Keep up the good work and staying true to yourself.
Thank you so much for sharing this! Watching this has made me realize why I've scrapped too many comic ideas in the past: I always think I can pull off BIG ideas that slowly start to intimidate me. Like biting of more than I can chew; I fight with ideas inside my head too much with little action occuring. I think I'm going to give this a shot and finally do something. It looks like a fun activity to do, and I love the novelty of mini comics.
Thank you. My family has been going through a living hell these last 12 years and sometimes its so hard to think of a way out, to think of new ways to succeed, to remember there's always a way in. People like you making videos like this to help, to motivate, to inspire those that aspire to create...Thank You. God Bless
Hello so apparently your comment is still here. It never got deleted. This video gets a lot of comments everyday and sometimes life causes me to not be able to reply to everyone which I hate because I’ve always been big on replying to comments. That being said like I said in my reply to your other comment I’m really sorry your family has been going through a rough time. I can definitely relate. I think I’ve used the term “Living Hell” even on my vlogs on this channel to describe what my life has been like this past decade as well. It’s actually part of why I make videos like this when I can because I know how much of a struggle life is and things like this can really help even if your only able to chip away a little of creative work a day. I really hope things turn around soon for you and your family Josh! My wife and I will be praying that it it does. God Bless You as well man! Keep Your Head Up!!!
I think that's exactly what I need to do. I have so many ideas... It would be great to explore them. In the 90s, artists used to make "ash cans," comics that were basically what you described. It would be a great way to make promotional material, gain buzz & interest in a project.
Thank you so much for this video. The joy I can hear in your voice when you talk about comics is very inspiring! The accessibility of mini comics gives me no reason to procrastinate!
OMG, SO helpful. Thank you for addressing the intimidating factor. I'm an artist and just starting my first comics but it's a big project!! And though I've read books and watched videos, I still kinda feel like I don't exactly know what I'm doing. I think making some mini comics might help me learn stuff and relieve some of the pressure. Thanks again.☮
I was scrolling looking for other comic heads and found your page. I am currently working on my 2nd comic book and I was just telling a friend the other day I have SO many ideas but drawing comics take forever. I have done small web comic strips in the past, but I never made a mini comic book. I think you just inspired me.
Great advice thank you! I thought about being an author but realized my skills are more comic related, since I think more visually. I need to figure out my stories and get started! Thanks dude!
I took a "Comics in Society" class in high school and it was amazing fun. I made so many different short comics and I learned a lot about how to approach it. I haven't made comics in years, but after seeing your video I think I may start up again!
This os truly an inspiring video. During the early 2000 I was a "indi" publisher, I worked as a Graphic artist and illustrator for several print shops in my area and loved comics, I found out that there was a healthy community of other artists that were making their own comics and to make this story short managed to make regular schedule comic with a small but reliable fan base, make a comic strip for local biggest running news paper for 3 years and worked on several collective comics until 2015, then everything stops. Self imposed banishment mixed with apathy and depression kept me away of doing comics, I still do art and sell it but all the comics I've done during that time haven't seen the "light of day". At 51 I do have the respect of my peers but I also notice that I'm also seen as a hasbeen or old geezer pulling me back to my "hiatus black hole". Thank you for sharing this video, it truly gave me a new vision or approach to print my "lock away stored comics". You have a new subscriber. Thanks.
Thank you for making this video, sometimes we forget making a comic/manga doesn't mean creating a 300+ chapters masterpiece like the next One Piece or Bleach, you really toned it down to an healthy, challenge-able size.
I struggle massively with creating vague, grand ideas in my head and never sincerely starting them.. this video is DEFINITELY WHAT I NEEDED! Best way to practice is by doing, and it's satisfying to have something DONE in under a week..very motivating..THANK YOU SIR!!
Im 17 and comic writing is something I really been so into. I've been into drawing sence pre-school always looking forward to learn stuff and get better thanks. 😊
mini comics are a great way to flesh out ideas as well. at one time all i had on me were a small stack of blank 3x5 cards, that I used to sketch out images that would catch my eye. I outlined a comic idea with text and sketches that i used to create out a single sheet , no staple 8 page mini comic. Don't over think it, just pick up your pencil and *DRAW!*
When you first started talking i wasent sure what to expect but i can tell you the bar was pretty low. And now that I've watched it, all i can say is Thank you.
I loved this. When I was a kid in the 60s all I did was read comics and make mini-comics. This brought back a lot of memories. I had super heroes and hardy boys type stories and I think even a lost in space type one. I think I might start doing them again.
Using marvel as my frame of reference was pretty intimidating. Trying to draw out my big thoughts on page is hard, so starting small is a great idea! Thanks for the tips!
Mini-Zines are fantastic. I've been making and drawing short little gags for years. But am now on the path of creating my own feature... Aka 'Strange Floaters'. Great video!
I had been trying to find help to start a cartoon for ten years now. A writer who thought he had no artistic talent cause it was easier to not try. About a month ago now I finally decided to stop waiting for help and help myself. I have spent night after night grinding, getting better at art by learning how to learn. Last night I found and was able to comfortably replicate the artistic style I will be using for the first of three short web comic series to introduce people to the creative universe I have played with for a decade. Today I will be trying to figure out how to release in two different formats. The scrolly webtoons one, and the simple mini-comic format you have shown here. Thank you Marsh, For giving me one less excuse and one more busy day :)
As a child, my dad used to take me to the little comic shop in the arcade in town and I’d always run to the tank girl comics to add to my collection. As an adult, with every tank girl comic in my collection, I want to make comic books like that, I just never get off my ass to do it! This gave me that push, thank you x
This gave me motivation to work on my first comic. Even if my art is garbage, it felt great! Going to do another when I get time next week. Thanks a ton!
This is awesome. I'm so inspired. I have wanted to make my own comic book but I felt overwhelmed. I have that Marvel book and others. I studied a lot of Conan, Savage Sword of Conan. I wanted to do historically based comics. This really got me inspired. Thank you for this video.
Your advice is great. I would have never thought of this. Like you I am stuck reading dozens of how to do comics books and I have not started yet. I now know step one. Jezz man, thank you, I really mean it.
I found this video very inspirational. And I have already made 7 issues of my own mini comic! It's a horror anthology called God-Awful Comics. It's a great hobby to get into! I'll share this video on my Facebook page. Thanks for the encouragement!
Like I been saying in other videos, I'm already starting my comics. They're not even nearly done, but so many ideas. Might have been drawing them wrong, but hopefully I could edit them by adjusting the pictures and seeing if I could edit the erasing marks. They're not done by ink, only by my pencil led
You are a God-send! I've been looking how to start my story, and I've looked at the big leagues like DC and Marvel, but they make me feel like a small fish in a big pond. I believe in my story, but I have always been looking for the right "platform" to start my story from. I happen to come across your video today when doing my homework. Mini-comics to me feel so "NIRVANA". Anyway, thank you for this video! At this point it is up to me to make my dream come true, but let it be known, you were the right flavor I was looking for. Good night!
The mini comics are called zines (short for magazines) they have comics, writings, politics, everything. It’s an amayzing concept. It’s just a cheaply made and self published magazine
as someone who has made a few minor comics that got a small bit of liking and some hate, one thing I learnt is it's ok to fail. they help me learn and get better. when you're making a comic on your own time. it's ok to fail just learn from it.
Thank you. Thats all I can say. I have this great idea for a superhero story that was going to be a movie (I am an ametuer writer/director) and after realizing how daunting of a task that would be I turned it into a novel, but I am first and foremost a visual story teller. A comic book is the way to go and you unpacked it so simply and made it feel like an achievable goal for a first timer. Its late as hell for me right now and a school night too but I could care less, if I dont do it now I never will. This has been the most inspirational video Ive probably ever seen and you instantly earned my subscription.
Love the video. My favorite artist is Jim Lee, legendary artist of Marvel, DC, and co founder of Image. I’m working on a storyline, look, and whole new origin story/character of a new Spider-Man. It’s so fun doing concept art for every character, hero, villain, and thanks for giving me pointers like these. ✌🏻 Subbed
I really appreciate this video ;; I've been struggling real hard on how to start. I've built up this whole world and explored it so much it's hard to get it down on paper. Starting small is a good idea. and you're excitement and earnestness makes me feel better and that I can start. thank you
I’m 14 years old and I originally wanted to be an electrical engineer but when I studied I almost fell asleep. The job seemed boring. Not as fun as I thought it was gonna be. I decided to try something that was fun. Then I thought, I can try making comic books. So now I am thinking of coming up with a dog comic book character but needed to look up advice on how to creat him. So this video did help a bit.
How do you go about selling them & actually make money at it.... Making my own comics is something that I've thought about for years even attempted a few times.
There are tons of ways to sell comics but it's a real challenge to make good money in it. Not impossible though! I've talked in videos about it a lot but I'll have to do a dedicated video on it soon!
I really needed this, thank you! One of the biggest hurdles to wanting to make comics is to actually start, and you gave us many valuable tips and ideas. Thank you! You earned a sub
Thanks for subscribing to my channel! I just subscribed to yours. Awesome video. I know it can be overwhelming to try doing a comic like the 11x17 pages so doing these mini comics would be awesome. I used to do mini comics in the past years ago. I think I might want to get back into that again after watching this. Thanks! =D
I started drawing my character sketches and broke down how I want to do my comic in seasons by writing the synapses of each episode... this was very helpful
I recently was gifted a sketchbook with nothing but comic panels. It inspired me to take a look at the backstories for characters that have been marinating in the creative pot for way too long. I was still procrastinating because I didn't want to dedicate all my focus to one project when I also had so many other ideas and WIPs to work on. Your video was the final push I needed to actually start on creating, because it never crossed my mind to do mini comics. (I know right? I'm such a dingus.) Thank you so much for that final dose of motivation!
Thank you! Last night I started to layout a mini-comic of my son's work (he's 7) and today we found your video. Very reassuring and encouraging! He loved seeing all of the mini-comics because they looked a lot like his.
I'm currently making a comic, but I'm on page 11 and it took me a month to reach at where I am, I use office paper to make the pages and stick them onto each other to form a book like structure, I plan on making 20 pages in my comic chapter and make 5 volumes containing 30 chapters each.
I have a bad habit of rewatching this right before bedtime and getting all fired up to make comics. This is so motivating!
Ha ha thank you!! I'm honored and I definitely know how that feels LOL 😎👍

Your Welcome! Good luck! 😎👍
I'm making a police based comic book called, Fingerguns. It's sorta like Brooklyn Nine Nine
cool cool cool
Not cool any how bruh🙄🙄

I’ve been wanting to start making comics for a little while now as a way to tell the stories of my oc’s & I went into this video planning to skim through & get some basic tips, but I ended up watching the entire video since you explain everything so well & the comics you showed really inspired me. Thank you so much for this!
Your very welcome! I’m revisiting this idea myself to get back to kind of re build 😎👍
What markers are good for cardstock without it showing on the other side of the paper?
I had no idea that mini comics were even a thing 😱 I’ve been interested in cartoons my entire life. My dad is an artist, and mostly does cartoon styles drawings/paintings. I’ve always struggled as an artist. I’ve tried drawing and painting, and always struggled finding my own style...but lately I’ve been drawing more cartoons, and it seems to come to me more naturally than the other things I’ve tried. I definitely want to try drawing up some mini comics now!
Wow... Thanks man 🙏
I think I can do it.
This is so good man. I'm inspired!! Well done.
Thank you! I'm really glad you got so much from this! 😎👊
Awesome! Glad to help!
Damn this guy got some serious dedication to still look through the comments section, mad respect dude

I think that's exactly what I need to do. I have so many ideas... It would be great to explore them.
In the 90s, artists used to make "ash cans," comics that were basically what you described. It would be a great way to make promotional material, gain buzz & interest in a project.
Exactly man! Good luck on yours!
My comic has been 'on hold' for a few months. This advice is just what I needed. Thanks and btw your comics look cool!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. The joy I can hear in your voice when you talk about comics is very inspiring! The accessibility of mini comics gives me no reason to procrastinate!
i think i can get past procrastinating now
i just made fist manga on my channel
do u mind checking it out and let me know wat u think?
Thank you yeah Im pretty amped up on comics for sure LOL 😎
Awesome! Yeah I'll check it out!
Watching this motivated me in a way other people haven't been able to. So thanks for that.
You're so welcome I'm glad it was helpful! 😎👍
Awesome good luck!!!
Great advice thank you! I thought about being an author but realized my skills are more comic related, since I think more visually. I need to figure out my stories and get started! Thanks dude!
Awesome Your Welcome. Good luck! 😎👍
Im looking into making comics and this video is fantastic! Thank you!
Your welcome! 😎👍
I really like how you actually respond to people’s questions 👍
I try 😎👍
So glad it was helpful!
I find the hard part is developing a story! The drawing is easy and fun
Developing the story can be fun too! I'm definitely going to do videos on that as well very soon!
I actually have lots of ideas for comics, the thing is my motivation is terrible.
Your video has been in my recommended for a while now. I'm starting my comic. Thanks for the motivation.
Your welcome!!

I love it!!! 😎👊🏻
When you first started talking i wasent sure what to expect but i can tell you the bar was pretty low. And now that I've watched it, all i can say is Thank you.
Great inspirational video mate 👍
Oh man I was about to give up and OH BOY BACK TO THE DRAWING BOOK.
Came so far and almost gave up. What a life changing event 🤣
"You can do it on your printer."
Me who doesn't have a printer: ...
You can also print it on other places like he said
I loved this. When I was a kid in the 60s all I did was read comics and make mini-comics. This brought back a lot of memories. I had super heroes and hardy boys type stories and I think even a lost in space type one.
I think I might start doing them again.
That's awesome man!
Using marvel as my frame of reference was pretty intimidating. Trying to draw out my big thoughts on page is hard, so starting small is a great idea! Thanks for the tips!

pleas may you mack a video on how to publish a a4 size comic with out folding it.I am thank full for your time
So many awesome ideas. So glad I found your channel 💙
Mini-Zines are fantastic. I've been making and drawing short little gags for years. But am now on the path of creating my own feature... Aka 'Strange Floaters'.

Awesome! Glad I could help! 😎👍
Thank you Marsh,
For giving me one less excuse and one more busy day :)
You rock man I definitely want to see what you’ve made when your done!!! Hit me up when you’ve got something to show!
Nice
This is awesome. I'm so inspired. I have wanted to make my own comic book but I felt overwhelmed. I have that Marvel book and others. I studied a lot of Conan, Savage Sword of Conan. I wanted to do historically based comics. This really got me inspired. Thank you for this video.
So much inspiration in history! What times are you most interested in exploring? Glad you dig the video 😎
Love your videos man, so positive,so helpful, just really awesome.
I'm really glad you like them! 😎👊
Your advice is great. I would have never thought of this. Like you I am stuck reading dozens of how to do comics books and I have not started yet. I now know step one. Jezz man, thank you, I really mean it.
This is the most helpful video I've ever watched tbh; time to make a mini comic at 3am
I've been thinking about making a mini comic. Maybe someday!
You should! Good luck! 😎👍
I found this video very inspirational. And I have already made 7 issues of my own mini comic! It's a horror anthology called God-Awful Comics. It's a great hobby to get into! I'll share this video on my Facebook page. Thanks for the encouragement!
Sweet Thank You! 😎👊
Like I been saying in other videos, I'm already starting my comics. They're not even nearly done, but so many ideas. Might have been drawing them wrong, but hopefully I could edit them by adjusting the pictures and seeing if I could edit the erasing marks. They're not done by ink, only by my pencil led
Nice! Yeah good luck!
Thank you so much. This means everything.
I'm glad it's helpful!
I had that first book years ago, I gave it to one of my daughters who is an artist but not an illustrator
Gotcha. Good stuff! 😎
I have a problem with panels and on details in my comics plus coming up with to many ideas before typing them lol
Keep working at it you'll get there!
Thanks
as someone who has made a few minor comics that got a small bit of liking and some hate, one thing I learnt is it's ok to fail. they help me learn and get better. when you're making a comic on your own time. it's ok to fail just learn from it.
It’s a great lesson! Keep up the good work!
I started my comic with absolutely no planning and now I'm just trying to watch a bunch of videos on story planning before I continue forward lmao
✌🏻 Subbed
Thanks for subbing! Yeah Jim Lee is a legend for sure and seems like a really cool guy as well!
How to bind the paper? Pls so I can make a book and comic book 😁😊
I use a long arm stapler I got from an office supply store!

Great video Marsh! I really wanna try your 1 hour challenge. Love the "start today" tip. So true.
Thanks Teresa! I hope you do!!! 😎🎨

I don't know of one but I'm sure there is somewhere. Hmmm might be a good idea to start one up!
There possibly could be a community in Amino for that
Thanks for subscribing to my channel! I just subscribed to yours. Awesome video. I know it can be overwhelming to try doing a comic like the 11x17 pages so doing these mini comics would be awesome. I used to do mini comics in the past years ago. I think I might want to get back into that again after watching this. Thanks! =D
Exactly! Thanks subscribing 😎
I'm such a dingus.)
Thank you so much for that final dose of motivation!

I'm currently making a comic, but I'm on page 11 and it took me a month to reach at where I am, I use office paper to make the pages and stick them onto each other to form a book like structure, I plan on making 20 pages in my comic chapter and make 5 volumes containing 30 chapters each.
Oh wow great progress!
