I just put three quarters of a mug of boiling water in a mug, add a raw egg, heat for 40 seconds, turns out spot on. To be fair though doesn't take much longer in a saucepan on top of the oven. You need more water in I think so the egg literally poaches in the water.

There is an art to this. My tip is to turn the power down to medium, and a little more water. People often forget they can turn the power down on microwaves, and eggs don't like intense bursts of heat.
Good 2nd effort though, and I would have eaten the first one too!

Hi from Florida, USA. I’m American and quite the foodie. Ok, I see a possible problem. Your microwave is 1200 watts. I have 1000 watts so about 50 seconds for a poached egg. Use a little more water like 30 ml not 20. We Americans refrigerate eggs so I leave it out at room temp but I think my UK friends do not refrigerate them. So I’m thinking you need to reduce the power from full to maybe half and give it another try. I just made a poached egg in a ceramic coffee cup. First try, perfection.

😆 Nice one Gaz... That gave me a good laugh mate... There wasn't enough water in the cup my friend... There's supposed to be 50% water in the cup with no butter either... Once the Egg is cracked into the cup... Use a toothpick or pointed sharp knife to pierce the Egg Yolk... This prevents a build-up of pressure in the Egg Yolk... This stops the Egg Yolk from exploding in the microwave... Your 800 Watt microwave needs to be set for one minute exactly... Once removed after cooking... If it's still slightly underdone just leave it in the hot water for another fifteen to twenty seconds or so... It should then be perfect... Once you try it a few times... You'll start to make them perfect every time... Don't give up on it mate... You'll eventually get there buddy... Remember there's plenty of (how to) videos on this platform... All the best... Cheers Gaz. 🍺

Have you tried the cling film method? Line a cup with cling film, grease the cling film with oil, crack the egg into the cling filmed cup, wrap the egg quite firmly to remove air, seal the cling film with a clip or elastic band then poach for 4-5 minutes in simmering, not boiling water. Almost the same as what you already do, but perfectly shaped every time when you get used to it. Plus you can do many at the same time because they won't stick to each other.

The best method I found is to sous vide them but it's a bit of a palavah. Set temp to 74c then drop the eggs in still in the shell. Take them out after 15 mins or dump in them in freezing cold water to stop the cooking. You can keep them in the fridge for a few days that way. Then take them out of the shell and drop into boiled water for a minute.

I find the comments most helpful. Poke the eggs, cold water, no warm water, turn microwave power down, this much water, no too much water, off set the bowl off center, break up timing of cooking egg from 1 minute to thirty seconds x 2, etcetera . As soon as a watched you put it in the microwave you was pretty lucky it didn't all come out. When putting a egg in a microwave you always need to just prick the Yoke to stop that happening as the yoke in in a sack and the steam can't escape we have all done it. As long as you prick the yoke with a skewer you can cook a egg on a plate comes out like a fried egg.

The secret to a perfect microwave poached egg, apart from sticking a cocktail stick in the yolk, is it has to be very fresh, farm eggs are the best, they're getting on for a week old before you get them in the shops.

Also helps with a clear glass container so you can see the progress.

Try it with a damp kitchen towel over the top and only 40 seconds

Oh dear, A that's going to explode and B you're going to be cleaning that microwave again. Plastic Jug, 300~400ml of boiling water a couple chopped up lemons, and cook on full power for a good 5~10 minutes, the lemony steam will clean it lovely. Ooh and you can't melt candle wax in a microwave either (Ask me how I know) And DON'T pull it out and look straight into the mug, if it explodes you're getting an eye full of boiling hot egg that's stick to your eyeballs wet surface. If you are doing a lot of poached eggs, in the frying pan with a decent depth of water will work fine. Ooh and microwaves work better at the edges, not in the center.

I usually melt some butter in a Ramekin. Then crack the egg in . Pierce the yolk with a cocktail stick. Cover with cling film and then put it in microwave for about 30 secs on full.

Never put an item like a cup in the middle of a microwave. Always on outer edge

The only thing I would say is not to put it in the center of the microwave, use the outer edge for more even heating.

You can pierce the yolk before you put it in the microwave and then it will not explode.

Whoever told you to put water into the mug was totally wrong instead use a small dish no water obvs and put it in the microwave cover it up with two pieces of kitchen paper and ONLY put it in for 30 seconds and it’s perfect believe me as I’ve been doing this method for years and years now and good Luck btw !!!! Xx 👌🤞 Xx

Should try it in the ninja mate. You need some ramekins or silicone egg poach things. Put a cup of water in the ninja. Lightly oil the ramekins put the eggs in the ninja ( pot not crisping basket) and set to pressure cook/steam for 3 mins.
Best/easiest way of doing them imo

I have an Instant Pot and do have the egg cooker, it looks like a flower. Do I cover the eggs on the steam mode? This appears to be the easiest method.

I put the egg in the cup first, then water. I never pierce the yolk and also cook it for about 50 seconds. They normally turn out perfectly.

Erm no don't do that as it can make a right old mess. If you are heating stuff in a mug the centre is the worst place, place it near the rim. HP sauce goes well with eggs on toast. ;-)

Nothing wrong with Aldi eggs or Nordpack butter, I went shopping earlier in Aldi, it cost me £64 for a weeks shopping that was with a fire extinguisher for my car boot at £5 (You just never know) lol and a carbon monoxide alarm thing for my flat £10..(with the batteries... yaaay!!) But Gareth, your videos are appreciated and enjoyed by many.

If you are using a microwave Gareth, don't put the item in the middle. Always put it off centre to heat as evenly as possible :)
