    Many thanks for the video. My mom's floor furnace wasn't turning on. My brother would remove the old mercury based thermostat control from the wall undo the wires and touch them together to make it come on. So, I said instead of calling the heating and cooling repairman, let's go get a new digital one from Home Depot. Found your you tube video, and voila - we replace the old one with the new one, and mom's furnace is working again. Again, thanks for taking the time to make the video.

    Nice video, it's nice to see you again. I would advice you to have the camera at an angle to the side of whatever you're screwing so you would not have your hands in the way. You don't have to turn off the camera, you could move it closer and then edit out the part where you're setting it up at the new angle and add a transitions between the two scenes. Thanks for making these videos.

    Thanks very informative what if the wires aren't long enouge

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need to do a small wire splice to extend them. If it is a low voltage like this example then those connections shouldn't need to be in a junction box but should be connected using wire nuts or wag connectors. Just cut a small hole in the wall and the connections can hang in the wall. I would also suggest matching up the wire colours correctly so it is easier to determine what is what.

    • @SirBonerfart
      @SirBonerfart 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, however you may not get all the functionality out of your new thermostat.
      For example in your case the new thermostat may have a switch to turn just the furnace fan on for improved air circulation, but with only two wires you wont be able to use this. if this doesn't bother you than just be sure to buy a 2 wire stat so you're not paying for things you cant use. Your other option is to call your heating company to run new wire up to the stat, I would make sure they run at least 5 wire in case you ever decide to get air conditioning.

    Glad you see a new vid from you! I love all the stuff you do and it gives me confidence to do my own work.
    A lot of the new t-stats I look at talk about a C (common) wire. I have an old furnace that may or may not have a C wire. Does that limit my options?

      Thank you for your attention to my problem. I removed the batteries for several hours, in the evening installed them back, but still the thermometer reading on thermostat is chaotically changes from 1-2 till 97F. Not a problem to buy a new one, just curious, how the cleaning of the contact (though with rust dissolver) could effect the device in the way that the readings float like that. Probably thermoelement was damaged initially with the corrosion and possibly with my cleaning in addition.

    Very informative. I must say though it's unfortunate the wires in the wall aren't color coded according to the letter code. Really inconvenient. I might actually have to label the wires with tags one at a time as I take them off. Normally r is red, w is white, y is yellow, and g is green

      If you have an emergency switch to turn off the furnace either on a wall somewhere or in the furnace room or location, you can just switch that off to kill power.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup look for a switch near the furnace or near the door way coming into that room, but there will be a breaker also. Turn off breakers one at a time till you find it, then mark it.

    Why in the world would anyone design and build a high voltage thermostat? I mean you can always use a relay to close the circuit on the high voltage heater. Running high voltage through a thermostat that is going to sooner or later break and need to be replaced is just dumb and dangerous.
