Yeah but in this case, the cannon is the weakest of the 14 lol. Really hoping Capcom give the lance some more love. As a lance main I feel it got the least amount of significant improvements from base world.
@@randomrandomnesss2188 Yeah, but i mean, its kinda hard to add more stuff without changing how the general Lance playstyle is. Even adding the offensive guard buff, which is a god-send for lance, nearly wiped out the whole "immovable lance" playstyle, and now everyone does evading lance
@@sergioontiveros4984 alright Sergio I'm gonna need to break it down for you since you're clearly very hurt about not seeing a guard thrust. I cannot do them due to not being able to move my fingers. While holding bumper buttons I have to commit my other hand to pressing x, y, b or a so I can't do those and simultaneously point the stick in the direction to guard thrust. I truly hope you'll be able to make it through this hard time. 🙏🏽
Honestly Lance + Impact Mantle solo is great. That amount of knockdowns you can get are crazy. On another note the gaurd advance move is also great for mobility and blocking as you can guickly advance in any direction after a poke. And I noticed the video you seathed the lance when you clutched the monster in its reeled back state. There is a shortcut to claw with lance. For an Xbox controller you would Hold LT (Button that puts you into a mode to fire a slinger burst/counter claw) Press the Right Stick and then you can claw from a different stance. Another quick tip, make sure to get crystalburst or scatternut to use for burst as it staggers any non-siege monster. For scatternuts you can get them to fall by firing your claw or slinger at them. Anyway keep up the great hunts my fellow Lancer! I'm going to start trying Hunting Horn because of your videos.
That's what I like to hear!! And thank you for the Lance tips! The more solid info the better. I'm surely not an expert with it, more so an enthusiast. 😂
I really wish there was a setting that let's you change what mode for the clutch claw/slinger burst you want to be as the default. Sometimes it's just a pain trying to switch and I'm just going into clutch counter over and over.
Build a gathering set for the guiding lands and spend a few hours mining for fuel while the fest is still going. I got two shield jewels, two attack jewels, and a bunch of other rare ones from the last festival from about 150 or so silver melding tickets. It's kind of boring but I think the chances are a lot better with steamworks melding tickets than Greatest Jagras/The Name's Lavasioth, plus you can also meld all the crappy decos you get from the steel tickets. You can rubber band your controller to hold R2 and occasionally check to reset it after going into overdrive. I just watched TV while the steamworks ran in the background.
After doing some stuff in master rank i dropped some rarity 4 offensive guard deco and an other one that boost the guard. I know nothing about this weapon but i will try it now. SOOO... YHEA.. THX YOU VERY MUCH MAN... NOY COOL.
Something I think you kinda went went over but also missed was, I find the damage Lance can do to be equal or higher then most other weapons apart from the highest damage weapons in the game, a lot of it does come down to the player, but I find the lances ability to almost never stop attacking to be it's greatest strength, it's combos do anywhere from 200-300 damage depending on weapon and build type thing, but other weapons have to dodge away, move and do other things that takes away from time to damage, Lance can just counter guard combos into the attacks and never stop hitting, my biggest complaint with lance is the need to have flinch free online, the fact I can hold up my defenses with 500 ton monsters dive bombing me, but I can't withstand a small bump from an teammate is a bit silly.
I play a lot of other weapons, like bow, LBG, CB and HBG for example and you are correct. Lance is absolutely capable of being up there in terms of dmg, is just that the numbers are small but they are too many and too quick. On that note, GL also does some serious dmg being very safe as well, maybe not as safe as lance but wide and long shelling are very good
So glad I found this video a year later as I just bought IB recently. Your view of the lance is almost exactly the same as mine: its comfy, its defensive, you can stick to a monster like glue when everyone else has to run away, and now with IB, and you get even more offensive rewards for precision (softened points and counter claw) and defense (offensive guard). Your commentary and footage also makes you appear super authentic, showing times you messed up/got hit/whiffed an attack, it looks like me playing rather than some montage of monster trips and insane combo executions, I'm struggling a lot to build up the muscle memory of the clutch claw, especially getting the counters off, but then also what the heck I'm doing once I've clutched onto a monster.
Love it! The lance and hunting horn have been my mains throughout World and Iceborne, and I am so happy with where they are at right now. So much fun to use!
Hey, Isaac, I got a friend who is just starting to play World, and he'd like to main either the Lance and HH. Do you have any tips I could give him? Thanks in advance. ( I'm an IG hunter so I don't know anything about those things >-
@@GoatFelon Not really. Just give me whatever you think is key for the weapons. Perhaps a skill list could be useful too, if you can remember. He's a newbie to the MH series, feel free to write as much as you want.
Me playing lance: Poke poke poke hop, poke poke poke hop, face tank attack. Oh yeah it's all coming together 😏. Edit: Guys it's a joke, I only main lance and know the other moves you can do ☺.
If you're poking up, you may consider doing un-held Counter Thrust as a slightly faster reset than hop, especially if you don't really want to reposition.
@@TubeTAG I was just joking on the lance playstyle. I usually do poke x3 into counter thrust or if a monster down I poke x3 into a charge attack cancel for the third big hit. ☺ thanks for the advice though i appreciate it.
I'm a Lance main that found your channel while learning to play the Hunting Horn. (I love HH in Iceborne.) I wanted to mention that you should not underestimate the mobility of the lance! If you build Evade Extender and utilize your hops along with guard dash+leaping thrust a skilled lance user can run circles around the monster, and if you use the dash attack its easy to keep after a monster after it leaps/runs away. Awesome video and I look forward to the Guild Palace horn review as well.
I dont know what compelled me but after 5 generations of monster hunter i finally picked up lance as a main in world and have been enjoying it so much more than ever. I rarely even used the new moves until i reached high rank as Im still just trained to use the same controls from the last 5 generations. It really is truly satisfying. And man, those side-step guards were the last piece of the puzzle to bridge evade and guarding lance together, its fantastic!
Completely agree with you. Lance and Gunlance has been my love children since Generations on the 3ds. I even went back to play lance on 4u and 3u. Such a classic weapon.
Great video man, got me wanting to go back to my first weapon love in this game. Lance in MHW it is my go to weapon of choice especially when I'm facing a new monster. I would love the following added to the weapon. Think about this...just about every melee weapon has some form of a "charge" attack. Basically a special move after building meter of some sort. I think the lance would be a truly complete weapon if it had an additional mechanic such as the following: 1) The "retaliation" meter is built by blocking attacks (in small amounts) 2) More meter is gained by counter blocking effectively and landing hits, the counter claw wouldn't add small or large amounts of meter. 3) The "charge" gained on the shield can be transferred to the lance while you are blocking, maybe something like the charge blade. Of course with a different animation 4) When a full stack of damage energy is transferred to the lance you can store another stack of energy in the shield but can't transfer it the lance until the current charge is expended by executing the finishing move. 5) The finishing move for this new mechanic could be a rapid dash over a very short distance to the target called FINAL THRUST that expends all the built charge from the lance into the monster for devastating effect. It could also include a guaranteed knock down as part of the effect. This new mechanic would reward strategic lance play that allows players to have a flashy attack after patiently blocking , counter attacking and being an all around embodiment of defense. I think adding something like this would add more depth to the lance.
Unless the monster has a debuff they apply, I love running impact mantle. I'd also recommend, if you are running this self healing build, that you play with the "Peak Performance" or "Agitator" skills if you don't have attack decos.
Another really neat thing about the Lance that I dont hear many people talking about, is how the weapon chooses what weakness number to use when attacking a monster's part. For example, if the tail of a monster is weak to cutting damage, then the Lance uses that damage number for its attacks. If the head is weak to blunt damage, then it uses that number instead. However, all attacks still deal cutting damage, but it basically hits for the highest damage possible.
Glad to see more love for the Lance! It's been my main for 90% of the base game and Iceborne so far. It feels so incredibly powerful and it feels great never getting hit. That does however mean I struggle to try other weapons that require playing cautiously... I notice our play styles are quite different. I'd certainly recommend messing with the guard advance and thrust for movement instead of sheathing! One thing to note is the inability to counter directly after a advancing thrust. That's where you simply guard advance in any direction again and then shield bash! I'd also recommend trying resetting the combo with counters too. If you happen to get hit during your counter, you can counter straight after again. If not, you can guard advance to quickly raise your shield and reposition. It's all about learning when you can and can't counter, and when to guard advance! I rarely hop unless I need a small reposition and know the monster won't hit me. Mastering this makes Lance feel so much more fluid. The constant harassment is real when you master mixing counters with guard advancing. It's a super safe way to reposition and keep combos going. Maybe you already do this outside of the video, but I figure I'd share my knowledge :) Either way, liked and subscribed!
Only recently picked up the lance. I was surprised how fast I down monsters. While the attacks do less damage, I am attacking FAR more often. In the end its not about damage on hit, its damage per second. Maybe it is just my play style, but I seem to do far more DPS with the lance than other weapons.
500+ hours and not one hunt done with the lance. Picked it up today finally. The first time I pulled off the clutch claw counter move I was in love. Needless to say I’ll be rocking this bad boy more often. Loved this vid.
My friend made me try out lance and I can't stop using it ever since! I didn't know how aggressive you can be in engages and disengages with a monster. Still working my way around the new counter guard mechanic but overall, lance is better in Iceborne. Thank RNJesus for blessing me that Guard Up jewel too.
I’m a lance main and you nailed my thoughts exactly! I’m on pc and we don’t have safi weapons yet and I’m aware that currently in pc, the ruiner nergy lance is considered best raw but pre iceborne the empress ruin lance was my goto. I’m considering using that again. Hasten recover plus health augment makes me feel safe and it’s blast, and like you said, the blast attack in teo waste would benefit it.
I started with lance in Iceborne but got distracted with all the other weapons. Thanks to your video I want to try it out again. Thanks for your great content!
Forget not about the Counter-Guard stance. It’s an amazing way to keep up an assault, and you can use it at any time during a combo. Plus, they can trigger OG, the way I do so, so long as I’m close to a monster, my attack buff isn’t going away any time soon. And, should you want to, charging a CG stance deals an upthrust which deals more damage than all other pokes except Dash Finishers of course.
Power guard into heavy thrust has the same Motion value as the charge finisher (not dual finisher), also charging regular counter thrust has the same MV as power guard thrust, but takes much longer, so generally not really worth. Power guard thrust also allows you to turn 180 degrees, especially useful for when you guard an attack but the monster just moves over your model, like Diablos' hip check.
Austin Muscat: And you’d be right, Power Guard Counter-Thrust would be more viable in damage dealing situations. The only downside is the stamina consumption (which is a fair trade-off for the range and speed). Let’s say you were hunting Ruiner Nerg, ya know that one-two claw swipe he does that has a knockback value of 1. Poke, Counter-Guard, poke, Counter-Guard, Poke, High Poke, High Poke. Situations where you don’t have time to enter Power Guard Stance. Each one has its pros and cons, unless I’m missing something and there’s a faster way to enter power guard other than RT/R2+B/O then A/X.
Crit Slide with Lance is really niche but incredibly powerful. I'm glad they shifted towards Guard priority but man i miss when Evade was the GOAT. I dunno if you played during 4U but Evade Ext made every single frame of the hop an I-frame so literally nothing could kill you. Akantor's laser? Dalamadur's laser? Jho's stomp? Apex Rajang's half-the-stage-sized rock throw? Absolutely nothing. Hop hop hop.
In FU i use the nargacuga armor and it really makes Lance so mobile, dodging attacks easily, and hopping to enemies without having to sheate. Allows me to have constant barrage of attacks. It's just so badass when all your teammates get flown from an attack while you continue to attack after dodging
I've been rushing through LR/HR as a Lance main when I got the game on PS4 (To play with some friends) without any of the skills Lance wants.. I feel like it's just so powerful it's almost not even needed. Though I can't wait to get the decos/armour that can push the weapon even further. Thanks for the build!
Nice intro, i assume that's you. I came into Iceborne with Bow and i... hate clutch claw so naturally my solo game went to crap. I did manage to get to Velkhana before i decided to SoS, but it's... not working for me, i can't have a group carry. I have ALWAYS had to solo first, then farm the parts out with a group, this has been my way since MH1 in 04... and its eating at me that i suck with CC and i don't have the gems needed to properly build a good dodge build for my bow, so here i am. Going back to lance like its 04 and i'm farming plates lol.
I respect you sticking to your traditions even when the going gets rough. I am not a fan of the clutch claw either and honestly I loved the bow pre-iceborne....but something just feels off for me! Good luck on your hunts my friend!!
10:00 Lance actually is the most mobile weapon in the game. Guard advance, lance charge, hops, and specially the infinite guard advance + triple poke combo makes so easy to move around and position yourself.
Is there a combo/glitch I don't know about called "infinite guard advance" or are you just referring to the ability to cancel pretty much any standard move with guard advance?
@@Drummerx04 Infinite guard advance is when you combo guard advance into advancing thrust over and over. Not only do you get tons of mobility with it, but you regen the stamina that you lost doing the advance when you use the thrust. So it's infinite movement. ALSO the thrust has natural mind's eye, so it's near unstoppable.
I have just recently started Iceborne after 557 hours on the base game and I barely understand any of the new mechanics but I did use the lance a lot on base game. What do I love about it? Every single time I tank a hit from a monster I get to tell them "frack you" and just stand there and take it. I just LOVE that feeling. Do note that I also play a ton of bow, SnS and LBG so I KNOW the value of not having to run from monsters ever. This is also why I love GL, wide shelling is really fun, but I do believe the lance is better for more mobile monsters. Love the video, never knew you, you gained a sub today man
Lance was the first weapon I really enjoyed, back when I started in MH Tri. I just love blocking EVERYTHING! Lance even feels like a boxing match with the target monster.
I really enjoy using the lance on my third character in mhw. You can literal hit and destroy any part of the monsters part that you can’t with other weapons. Hitting the monsters back, wings, and tails is so easy. You can literally casually sit back while fighting monsters.
Im sure somebody else in this comment section said it already but you forgot to mention the shield bash and clutch counter doing stun damage to knock out monsters and that the dash jump attack does mount damage, which means you can mount a monster anywhere! That intro was amazing along with this video! Im a lance main surprisingly. I used to be a great sword and long sword main back in mh4u
From hearing what you enjoy in your play style, I think Heavy Bowgun would be right up your alley. Specifically, I've seen people use the Zinogre HBG with three shield attachments and guard 5, which supposedly gives you "lance" blocking so long as your aiming down sight. The bowgun itself is just spread shot, it feels like a relaxing point-and-click adventure for most monsters. Have you ever tried this? Cheers, great video mate.
I play 99% ranged weapons but just tried lance for the first time in the Zinogre arena quest and it was surprisingly fun. I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for this blast one next time I fight Safi and copying this build. Thanks!
Billy Neitz agreed. I understand the idea behind lance is to tank, and a tank that’s also a power house (or could be a power house) could mess up the balance, buuuut.... that super poke would be AMAZING!
@@DigiTism I think it could be balanced well. Give it a somewhat long recovery animation that you cant move, block or recover stamina for a time to keep it from just being chained together. And I think instead of timing the attack it could be charged up depending on how much stamina you consume. I can see people skipping meals and letting their stamina get depleted from the cold to make the bar smaller. That way to make the attack stronger or able to use it more it would rely on using skills like constitution and stamina surge or the anjanath set bonus. So if you wanted to make it a really powerful attack you would either have to sacrifice other skill decos or use different armor than the meta set.
@Chris's C The thrust out of power guard, the jumping thrust, the charging thrust... All of those are pretty big hitting and can be pretty flashy. I mean, it's not a SAED or a TCS but still. Though, I do get your concern. I do feel like sometimes I wish I had a better way to take advantage of a downed monster than poke combo and finish with charge. Maybe we'll get our equivalent to SnS's perfect rush, where we have a set combo and we have to time the hits to get the most damage.
My favorite thing about power guard is that you are able to reposition and aim the heavy attack in any direction. Its super easy. You just power guard and point a direction then heavy. Easy reposition if you are not facing the right way. It saves time and does great damage too
if you run the val set bonus (either from your god roll awakened weapons or wearing 2 pieces (i recommend chest and waist, you can run teo everything else and because you're constantly taking and healing chip damage, latent power has a decent up time)) you can become invincible to everything except jho and the various elder dragons' enrage attacks, and gem in whatever skills you want in addition with your army of deco slots.
7:13 im a poor lance main that hasnt recieved the sweet shield deco and have been relying on uragaan's bonus skill. Uragaan is good at building up the Guard skill but limits the offensive pieces that you need to cover for the effective Uragaan armor skill spread (legs specificaly hurts a bunch) so im trying to learn with power guard. Also Lance relies too much on health regen augmentation to health that chip damage from guarding (less so with Guard 5).
I managed quite a lot with Vall Hazak Super Recovery skill. When you barely register damage, that super recovery helps a ton. Of course, even after 300+ hours in Iceborne I still havent got my lvl2 Health Regen augment, so I guess my life will be incredibly easier when I do.
Lance is in such good position now with its increased moveset. The defensive oriented nature just means you can be more aggressive than others and while the DPS or damage per hit may be low, the fact that you are 90% poking means you catch up in damage-done-in-hunt REAL fast.. maybe even top it.
Being an IG main where evading and flying over most monster attacks are my go to. This video has tempted me to try out Lance and stand my ground. Just getting into the guiding lands myself (PC) so I'll finish that up with the glaive and then definitely trying some hunts with the Lance. Noice vid.
Guard up in power guard is so satisfying when you get it to work. And quick thing to mention that I think you missed is that chip damage is increased while power guard is active. It's a trade off for being able to block a big hit with less knockback and being able to counter something you wouldn't normally be able to. In terms of damage, the lance is perfectly fine where it's at imo considering you can block almost any attack in the game while taking minimal damage AND it's perfectly capable of respectful times in speedruns. The lance is PERFECT how it is.
Lance is, hands down, who I am as a MHW player. I've tried Bowguns, Bows, Switch Blade, Charge Blade, Gunlance, Longsword and NOTHING feels more satisfying than counter attacking in a series then a final counter claw attack . I would disagree that a lance isn't a high skill weapon. Knowing the enemy patterns and attack animations and timing your block so that their attack becomes a damage option for you while always pressuring them requires a LOT of skill and enemy knowledge to truly maximize your playstyle. Couple in all the things you can do with the Lance from mounting, to clutching, to Dash attacks, there are some incredible combos and the defensive options are insane!! The Dash guard is OP as HELL. Seriously. The entire animation is animation is one long block and it triggers offensive guard EVERY time. It's the best. The only thing I dislike about the Lance (which can be overcome with skills and decos) is the sharpening and stowing speed along with eating and recovery. Putting up the lance takes FOREVER. Once u can augment this becomes much less of a problem, but until then, it's a pain. I love Lance. LOVE IT. Lancer for life.
Power guard is great for lava breath attacks, because not only does it give you guard up but once the hits start coming in, it doesn't consume stamina to block the hits *or* to hold the guard up stance. Because the stamina consumption pauses for a second when you get hit and these moves hit so quickly that you stamina just stays put, just like your hunter.
Lol finally someone who knows the way.....my entire youtube channel is nothing but lance videos....I think I have a problem. I am also less than a 100 away from 2k Lance uses. You good sir have my respect.
"You can take on anything and stand there nearly unscathed once the dust cloud settles" As a lance main this is true, except against Savage Deviljho. Never use guard lance against that thing. Savage Jho has several attacks that ignore Guard Up and you can't block its dragon cloud. It's just a very bad time. Go evade lance instead or just use a different weapon, the guard lance matchup is that bad.
I personnaly have an easier time with Savage Pickle with lance than any othewr weapon. Probably because I mainly stay between it's legs and poke that weak spot on his chest. It stops a LOT of his momentum and is very hard to hit for other weapon types. Dunno about the dragon cloud attack, I manage to guard it pretty often, so it's NOT unblockable. Maybe the "perfect guard" mechanic has something to do with it (like when you trigger Offensive Guard). The only attack I struggle with is his grab. Basically, grab attacks are the counter to lance for a a few monsters (Jho, Rajang, Rath familly), but with a perfect guard you can defeat most of them.
As a lance main, savage pickle is honestly one of the easier end game monsters to go up against, even with guard lance. For the lingering dragon breath that does slip dmg, it’s easy to just do a backwards guard dash into a long back hop and you’ll easily get out of range. Of course not being able to block pin attacks is still bullshit but as said in other comments keeping slinger ammo will help. As far as I’m aware except the pin attack all other attacks are guardable with guard up.
I’m new to the game and glad I bumped into your channel! Awesome content...I’m still experimenting with different weapons...but what really separates lance and gun lance I wonder
J Law Lance is all about that poke, unrelenting attacks, counters and staying on the monster 24/7. Plus it’s a lot more mobile than Gunlance. While Gunlance offers close-ranged shelling attacks that deals fixed damage along with those slow pokes and slashes but it doesn’t have counters and isn’t that mobile when unsheated. Both have really different playstyles.
I love your videos. I've always wanted to try all weapons but there's little information online on HOW to use them. If you search for, I don't know... charge blade, you will always find the same boring meta builds, but not HOW THE HELL AM I EXPECTED TO USE THEM. Some years ago I mained MHW with SnS, and when Iceborne came out I mained hammer, so I was comfy with both. But you saying "with SnS you are like a Warrior from D&D who never stops attacking" made all the difference in my playstyle and now I play it better (and get way more fun and flashier end screens, may I say :P). Tl;dr: thanks to you I've found how to make *click* with most weapons (I'm yet to understand LS, CB, GL and GS, though) and I'm loving all of them.
I wish I remembered the TH-camr that said it but he's the person that got me into using the Lance. It was many years ago when MHW was a newish game. I think he said he likes the lance because it's the only thing that made him feel like he isn't at the absolute mercy of monsters and it just stuck with me. I enjoy feeling like a tank and being safe. I do wish I could be a Longsword chad and dodge everything but I'm a brainlet.
Irony - Lance is harder to use effectively than Longsword. Foresight works the same as counter, except it has MASSIVE s and you have to do an attack prior. It also provides invulnerability during the entire dodge animation, as opposed to having to use it skillfully, you just snipe opportunities with pokes and then helm splitter.
If you're solo, this is essentially perfect info. However, IF MULTIPLAYER (fundamentally how Monster Hunter is intended to be played, btw): Guard Up *or* Offensive Guard, Guard 5, Provoker, Part Breaker, insert defensive utilities based on the monster you're hunting. Disengage monkey ook brain and take off crit/damage skills. They. Are. Not. Needed. With. Lance (in MP). You are now a raid tank. Your job is to use essentially your base ATK value to *never stop* hitting as many parts as you can. You hold agro and front load/buffer Part Breaks while keeping as much of the monster tenderized as you can. Clutch Counter is basically a guaranteed tenderize, as I have almost never been knocked off during a monster attack compared to a regularly aimed clutch. Lance Supremacy 4evar.
I've been playing MHW since release. I mained Bow, Hammer, GS, HH, throughout 3 playthroughs and also delved a bit in CB and DB. I thought that I didn't have much more to learn in terms of melee weapons since you share a lot of the basics between them. How WRONG I was and how different Lance/Gunlance feels to other weapons. It made MHW feel like a completely new game even after 700+ hours in it. :) If Rise wasn't coming out, I would probably put about 200 more hours into MHW:I with lance. :P
The Odogaron and Datura lines are absolutely my favorites, personally. Never appreciated the lance in past entries. I love using Powerguard more than regular guard, too.
I've been playing since MHFU and I had a friend who had been playing since the original tell me tales of the incredible debates on the gamefaq forums where people would passionately debate and defend whether or not the Lance was viable and if only those people back then could see the Lance now lol.
z0h Well I can’t disagree on that. HH has been buffed a whole lot in Iceborne now. Lance pretty much needs to keep attacking continuously in-order to keep the DPS up.
The timing of blocks are so rewarding with Clutch claw and offensive guard. Also love the look of the shields. And lastly I feels like one of the more mobile (when it comes to reposition) melee options with long reach.
I love playing the lance. With the new equipment and skills, I can control when to have the monster’s aggression towards me and never have to chase it. They come to me.
hey think of this *riding a wulg with your lance out charging a viper tobi* that would be so cool i got that idea from ragegaming they do monster hunter stuff
Lance is one of the most under rated weapon, yet it is powerful af. I was a player who tend to think maybe the Lance isn't my type of weapon as an IG & SnS main, yet i've changed my mind completly after being using it for a while. Its quite interesting and solid ;)
While I main the longsword most of the time (Yeah, big shocker...I am surprised myself...), the first time I came in contact with the lance in world was actually during a wall many had been faced with... Behemoth... Nobody wanted to take his enmity and purely do damage. Nobody wanted to heal and look after the others. The result: Tornados and death. They all wanted take those horns head one and boy was the body count high. I wasn't really comfortable with the weapon at the beginning, but I had enough of being stuck with the final fantasy music in the hub for months, so I made myself a comfy set for survival and...it worked wonders. I got in easier into than expected and the dash guard was a great tool to close the distance. Now that we are faced with his successor, Safi, where I noticed pretty much none to use the gas in the last area or able to take his attacks, the lance is a godsend. I take his attention, get him there and the others can go wild as he lays on the ground after the second explosion. Now I am getting back into it with these new additions. ...I appreciate your moment of silence for my missing shield decoration...I hope it will arrive someday at my doorstep, together with two more critical boost...
I have been using the gunlance a lot back then, but in MHW IB monsters move around to much and their attacks are so unexpected that I was wishing for something similar to the gunlance, maybe the heavy bowgun? Or the charge blade? I never expected I would have so much fun with a spear and a wall for a shield, using the Lance I have come to the conclusion that Im more powerful, useful, and survivable than any other weapon
I think the lance was the second or third weapon I picked up to learn in world and I sort of dropped it for the great sword and charge blade around 300 hours probably, but the kula yaku affinity lance and the pukei pukei lance were both my favorites in low rank and some of high rank, as well as the paralysis iron lance. I have been picking up the gunlance back up but the regular lance still has a special place, once I get a high rank one I could definitely get back in, the gimmicky mount builds I had with the charge attack was maybe somewhat inefficient on my part but for multiplayer the easy mounts were consistent free damage I had a lot of fun with. I’ve seen someone mention the impact mantle and I’m rediscovering the tool specialist magic I might have to goof off with a mixed mounting and impact set for the targeted chain cc happy hunting yall
how can you not be sold in the first second? i got a recommendation in my stream from chat, tried it and fell in love the abolute first second even tho I just missed most of my attacks first
I am one of the full offense player, but I do play Guard 5, and more important, each of my lance build have a version with Brace jewel to play in multi. More than every other weapons, Lance needs that brace jewel to not behind hit by most attacks of your mates, which can lead to a fall of DPS and can get you carted if this hit cancels your guard.
I like to use the lance to run across the entire map on a single stamina bar. I don't typically build for damage but more for comfy/utility so my builds have Guard 5, Guard Up, Marathon Runner, Stamina Surge, Recovery Up, & Health Boost. I use 2 pieces of the Banuk Armor for the increased stamina gauge. It works out well though I'll admit it takes me probably an extra 10 minutes per hunt. I'll fit on part breaker if I can but damage skills aren't at the top of my priority list for hunts unless I have a mere 15-20 minutes for a tempered hunt.
The lance may not have the highest damage, but it is consistent. Compared to most other weapons you have no need to disengage to avoid attacks, heal or reset an attack combo. It may be classified as a defensive weapon but I find it lends to a VERY aggressive playstyle. My favourite moves have become the dash attack into jump so I can mount or do areal damage or the guard dash into dive trust is the monster is just a couple of steps out of range. The big advantage with both of those attacks, are that they don't bounce, so you can damage certain part much easier such as Barroth or Diablos heads, especially if you have a blast lance.
Mained Lance in MHTri and just after Fatalis i got back into it. MHW is so well balanced with all weapons. There is not a single bad one, just some harder to learn.
So at time 5:50 you sheath just to run two steps to unsheath. All you had to do was dash forward with shield up nd do a jump thrust attack (On Xbox its Right Trigger + Up and Y to dash forward with shield up, then press B. Crazy mobility) just so you can stay on his ass nd do more damage Also at time 0:57 you did a regular block then continued you to poke. Im not sure if you kno but you can counter guard nd then change the direction in which you poke after. I say all this because it keeps up the DPS. Not sure you kno these tips or not just sharing tips for you nd the viewers SB: The lance is my favorite weapon since the beginning of it all. i loved headlocking the Rath in MH1
So counter claw is phenom, but I noticed you overlooked the standard counter. In addition to keeping pressure on the monster with that sweet DPS, frame-perfect counters will still proc offensive guard, nullifying the need to ever do a basic shield. Additionally, from power guard stance, you get access to one of the strongest hits available in the lance’s kit. I had no idea how versatile this weapon was until iceborne dropped for ps4 and I’ve barely put it down since!
best part about running lance on Safi is other teammates can actually hide behind you to avoid beam attacks. Feels really badass when you've got it's attention and a gunner sits behind you to shoot it in the face uninterrupted.
Hey nice vid did they change the Lance power block in iceborne? In the past i did some testing with the lance and without guard up nergigantes dive bomb (the one i tested it with) has carted me, furthermore i didnt notice any difference in chip damage for normal attacks with guard 3 to guard 5 besides the stamina use. To be clear i dont use Lance very often and havnt played Lance in iceborne at all so i am not aware of any changes to Lance
I used gunlance for the entire main quest of the base game, but I never got around to learning plain lance. After watching this video I'm thinkinh about giving it a go.

I used to main lance back in mhtri and 4U. been playing world since day 1. Time to main lance again after seeing this! (I am always bouncing back and forth between GS, SA, and IG)... but i might need to slip lance in there now :P
i have a lot of lance and gunlance hunts in Monster hunter and Lance was my main forever. i play HH now but when ever i need to relax and just beat up something i pull out the lance and fight a Diablos , Yan Garuga or even a Tigrex. I find those fights so enjoyable with the lance. I am glad you enjoy the lance and gunlance. The thing that most people just keep on forgetting about tanks is that tanks also have a fucking big cannon.
This is a goddamn poetry! 👍🏼

Y'all are the best. Plain and simple! 🤷🏽♂️
For an Xbox controller you would
Hold LT (Button that puts you into a mode to fire a slinger burst/counter claw)
Press the Right Stick and then you can claw from a different stance.

SOOO...
Your commentary and footage also makes you appear super authentic, showing times you messed up/got hit/whiffed an attack, it looks like me playing rather than some montage of monster trips and insane combo executions,
I'm struggling a lot to build up the muscle memory of the clutch claw, especially getting the counters off, but then also what the heck I'm doing once I've clutched onto a monster.
Love it! The lance and hunting horn have been my mains throughout World and Iceborne, and I am so happy with where they are at right now. So much fun to use!

I think the lance would be a truly complete weapon if it had an additional mechanic such as the following:
1) The "retaliation" meter is built by blocking attacks (in small amounts)
2) More meter is gained by counter blocking effectively and landing hits, the counter claw wouldn't add small or large amounts of meter.
3) The "charge" gained on the shield can be transferred to the lance while you are blocking, maybe something like the charge blade. Of course with a different animation
4) When a full stack of damage energy is transferred to the lance you can store another stack of energy in the shield but can't transfer it the lance until the current charge is expended by executing the finishing move.
You can feel the love for Lance in this comment! Haha love the idea. Good thinkin!
That would be nice
You could add in a charged drill mode where the lance has mind’s eye too and grants a shield buff that eliminates chip damage or knockback too.
As someone whose been lancing since MH Tri, this video gets my stamp of approval
Lance vet in the house! Respect. ✊🏽
i'm starting with lance in mhgu im face tanking bulldromes left and right and respect to you sir
Maybe you already do this outside of the video, but I figure I'd share my knowledge :)
Either way, liked and subscribed!
Thank you for the tips friend! If I can bring some more attention to an awesome weapon I won't hesitate! Lance definitely falls into that category. 😁
This guy nailed why I will always take a long pointy thing and a big slab of a shield into battle.

And, should you want to, charging a CG stance deals an upthrust which deals more damage than all other pokes except Dash Finishers of course.
you mean power gaurd counter thrust? like highest tier gaurd (built in gaurd up one) into the heavy attack?
The drum solo intro was everything I needed.

Every single time I tank a hit from a monster I get to tell them "frack you" and just stand there and take it. I just LOVE that feeling. Do note that I also play a ton of bow, SnS and LBG so I KNOW the value of not having to run from monsters ever.
Thanks for spreading the love of my favourite weapon!!

I just wish lance had one “flashy” and/or big hitting move.
It does. It’s called “gunlance”. Oh man, that’s just explosive.
Yeah, think there should be a powered up poke if you time it just when your about to run out of stamina from the power guard.
Billy Neitz agreed. I understand the idea behind lance is to tank, and a tank that’s also a power house (or could be a power house) could mess up the balance, buuuut.... that super poke would be AMAZING!
@@DigiTism
I think it could be balanced well.
@Chris's C
The thrust out of power guard, the jumping thrust, the charging thrust...
I would recommend ignoring the guard up part of power guard entirely. If you want more comfy, use quick sheath. SA is better for tail cutting.
The defensive oriented nature just means you can be more aggressive than others and while the DPS or damage per hit may be low, the fact that you are 90% poking means you catch up in damage-done-in-hunt REAL fast.. maybe even top it.
finally someone that gets the lance
Guard: You can't stop me no matter what you do
Guard up: Was I supposed to feel that?
Love that intro song man, that change of pace at 0:37, is there a term for it, or songs that have that in general?
Power guard is great for lava breath attacks, because not only does it give you guard up but once the hits start coming in, it doesn't consume stamina to block the hits *or* to hold the guard up stance. Because the stamina consumption pauses for a second when you get hit and these moves hit so quickly that you stamina just stays put, just like your hunter.
yo chief, awesome info. i don't play lance. but i enjoy hearing others passion. i may consider this.

"You can take on anything and stand there nearly unscathed once the dust cloud settles"
As a lance main this is true, except against Savage Deviljho.
That's why I always have scatternut or crystal burst, so when he does pin me I can get out of it easily
It's important to point out that Lance absolutely wrecks Jho when you counter his face. You can keep him staggered/KO'd for like 75% of the fight
@@francoiscoupal7057 i could block the cloud of the pickle
I’m new to the game and glad I bumped into your channel! Awesome content...I’m still experimenting with different weapons...but what really separates lance and gun lance I wonder
J Law Lance is all about that poke, unrelenting attacks, counters and staying on the monster 24/7. Plus it’s a lot more mobile than Gunlance. While Gunlance offers close-ranged shelling attacks that deals fixed damage along with those slow pokes and slashes but it doesn’t have counters and isn’t that mobile when unsheated. Both have really different playstyles.
Welcome to the family brother!
Oh you're approaching me?
COUNTER!
Try again for a penn-
COUNTER!
Oh no, some dust in my eyes. I'm so vulnera-
COUNTER!!!
If Rise wasn't coming out, I would probably put about 200 more hours into MHW:I with lance. :P
Handitipsgaming: I love lance.
Me: Handi are you just looking at things in the office and saying that you love them?
Lmao I'll tell you another thing I love.... Anchorman references 😂😂
Lance is still in the top 3 of least used weapons in MHW tho.
Well it’s being marketed mostly as a defensive weapon even though it has serious damage potential.
@@isaacbravo4760 Hunting Horn does more dps than Lance tho.
z0h Well I can’t disagree on that.
They come to me.
hey think of this
*riding a wulg with your lance out charging a viper tobi*
that would be so cool
i got that idea from ragegaming they do monster hunter stuff
Blocking safi lasers gives me strength
I have been using the gunlance a lot back then, but in MHW IB monsters move around to much and their attacks are so unexpected that I was wishing for something similar to the gunlance, maybe the heavy bowgun? Or the charge blade?
I never expected I would have so much fun with a spear and a wall for a shield, using the Lance I have come to the conclusion that Im more powerful, useful, and survivable than any other weapon
Same here lol. I main heavy bow gun in the base game. In iceborne monsters one shot me full health. I switched to lance now iam in love lol
I'll fit on part breaker if I can but damage skills aren't at the top of my priority list for hunts unless I have a mere 15-20 minutes for a tempered hunt.
can you please put the music in your videos in your description!?!?!? i want >: )
Bow main myself but this video got me interested, thank you
So at time 5:50 you sheath just to run two steps to unsheath. All you had to do was dash forward with shield up nd do a jump thrust attack (On Xbox its Right Trigger + Up and Y to dash forward with shield up, then press B. Crazy mobility) just so you can stay on his ass nd do more damage
Also at time 0:57 you did a regular block then continued you to poke. Im not sure if you kno but you can counter guard nd then change the direction in which you poke after. I say all this because it keeps up the DPS.
Not sure you kno these tips or not just sharing tips for you nd the viewers
SB: The lance is my favorite weapon since the beginning of it all. i loved headlocking the Rath in MH1
Lance is the most underrated weapon in the game
seriously its so op
Odogaron lance+ odogaron armor and max damage= soloing any and all monsters
So counter claw is phenom, but I noticed you overlooked the standard counter. In addition to keeping pressure on the monster with that sweet DPS, frame-perfect counters will still proc offensive guard, nullifying the need to ever do a basic shield. Additionally, from power guard stance, you get access to one of the strongest hits available in the lance’s kit. I had no idea how versatile this weapon was until iceborne dropped for ps4 and I’ve barely put it down since!
I personally don't really like the counter clutch, I can't break the muscle memory of couteri g and power gaurding
I would like to thank elder lady melder for my 1 and only guard up deco.
Pinning, Unblockable DoT, Blights : I'm about to end this man's whole career.
Just started the game this week was using the gunlance and decided to try the lance last night loving it 👍
best part about running lance on Safi is other teammates can actually hide behind you to avoid beam attacks. Feels really badass when you've got it's attention and a gunner sits behind you to shoot it in the face uninterrupted.
Hey nice vid
did they change the Lance power block in iceborne? In the past i did some testing with the lance and without guard up nergigantes dive bomb (the one i tested it with) has carted me, furthermore i didnt notice any difference in chip damage for normal attacks with guard 3 to guard 5 besides the stamina use. To be clear i dont use Lance very often and havnt played Lance in iceborne at all so i am not aware of any changes to Lance
I used gunlance for the entire main quest of the base game, but I never got around to learning plain lance.
After watching this video I'm thinkinh about giving it a go.
When you played the drums in the beginning and started talking I felt like I was getting a drumming lesson.
I switch from hbg to lance in iceborne
Playing with pukei rank 10 max poison, resentment, sheath speed and recovery speed , 3 guard and the rest is random.
Just KOed the first nargacuga in less than 20 mins
Parrys are OP.
Switched for hbg 3 shields mod, guard 5 and guard up as solo player
my build with lance is mostly just partbreaker and guard up
Im curious: Which Layered Armor are you using in the clip starting at 0:53 for your Cluch Claw? Because that looks really awesome!
Spread the word brother.
You seem to like all the weapons i like next you will say you love switch axe or charge blade i can not wait to hear about it
