  • Quick change rear ends have been the standard in racing and hot rodding for decades. They allow you to change final drive ratios with a simple gear change, so racers can maximize performance from track to track, and hot rodders can switch from highway to race gearing in minutes. In this video we explain how a quick change works in comparison with a standard, fixed-ratio rear end.
Since 1958, Winters has been crafting the highest quality performance rear ends and driveline components for racers and hot rodders alike. If we can answer any questions or if you’d like to view our online catalogs or request a printed copy, here’s how you can reach us:

A winters quick change is what Cup should go back too instead of their current transaxle.
These things were so easy to drain and use the combo chart to make any ratio we could dream of.

I got to give this man respect, he got me understanding a QC in under 51 seconds. I've changed more than a few gears in our outlaw sprint car and now I know why they let me have all the fun jobs replacing header gaskets and dropping oi pans and I didn't even get anything but a pit pass for pay.

At one time they were used to drive to the drag races on the hi-way, then race, by reversing the spur gears.

Can you run the pinion over the top for added ground clearance in a Jeep off road?

    Is a 1:1 ratio achievable?

Absolutely-our #1 gear set (for both 6- and 10-spline) is a 1:1 ratio. If you visit winters performance.com and click on "Gear Charts" you can view a PDF with all available ratios.

Does this give any advantage in power or what? Like, why was this part invented?

How much power and weight can it handle on slicks? 🤔

      The rule of thumb is:
      • V8 size (8-3/8" ring & pinion), the rear shown in this video, is rated to 600hp
      • Champ (10" r&p) is rated to 1,000hp
      • Champ HD (or a Champ equipped with some of the available heavy duty options, like a heavy duty lower shaft) is rated for over 1,000hp
But as you said things like slicks, trans brakes, how much the car weighs, etc. all play a role. If you're running a '32 Ford with 550hp, a T5 and pie crust slicks, a V8 rear will likely be just fine. If you're running a '68 Camaro big tire car with 550hp and a trans brake, you're going to want a Champ or Champ HD rear even though you're under 600hp.
Every rear is built to order. If you've got a specific application in mind, give us a call or shoot us an email and we can get all your details and build you a rear that will live.
