A big part of listening to Bjork is exploring her voice along with her. She's very much about the juxtaposition of light/dark, beautiful/ugly, hard/soft, etc. She's very much about exploring every emotion that humans experience. She doesn't want her voice to be beautiful all of the time. She appreciates that the ugly facets of humanity can also be incredibly beautiful in their own way. That's why I love Bjork so much (Aurora, too).

checking out her Vulnicura album would be dope, its lyrically the opposite of vespertine cause it describes the divorce from the guy she had built a family with, the strings are a masterpiece and her voice is immaculate 🤩

    2 observations:
    - Björk grows as an artist and continues to experiment. Her catalogue gets more difficult to digest the further you go. So rather than asking your audience "which album next", instead stick to chrono order (so go back to Debut y'all, lol). Be prepared that from here on in, most albums will take multiple listens over a long time to integrate.
    - Reading the lyrics on-screen kinda ruined the experience for you. Reading in advance not only distracts your attention, but robs you of surprises and pacing/cadence.
Bonus extra comment - Björk is a fantastic visual artist too. Watch her music videos after each album (perhaps you can also do reactions to those as you go!)

It's one of my absolute favorites from her and is SO crazy creative?? she made the entire album out of human mouth/singing/beatboxing, and it's crazy how well it works. really varied album that i think makes for a fun, wild experience!! some really beautiful songs on their, for sure :))

Edit: Also, re: the album cover. The hair is inspired by a Hopi hairstyle, the neck rings are apparently worn by Padaung women from Myanmar and the Ndebele women in South Africa, and the outfit is certainly inspired by a kimono which is Japanese.

The album cover was just named 54th best of all time by Rolling Stone. It’s supposed to be a blend of different cultural elements Japanese kimono, a European manicure, Maasai neck rings, and a Hopi “butterfly whorl” hairstyle - reflected Björk’s perception of herself as a global citizen.
Her best serious interview is the one she did with Charlie Rose which is on TH-cam.

This is my 2nd favourite album of hers after Vespertine. I really hate that they chose to put the remixed version of All Is Full Of Love on it though, as the original version is way better in my opinion. The original is the one with the Cris Cunningham directed video.

    • @GhostlyEcheveria
      @GhostlyEcheveria หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The Chris Cunningham music video has always scared the hell out of me, but that's part of what makes him such an amazing director. He's worked with Bjork on many videos, and the videos are almost always unsettling, while being perfect at the same time.

i think i’d recommend either going for debut or vulnicura next. debut is probably her most “90s” sounding album, but it still holds up great, some of her best songwriting. vulnicura is a modern classic tho, it’s the follow-up in vespertine in that it’s the break-up album following the relationship described on it.
for other recommendations tho, i’d definitely recommend “mezzanine” by massive attack if you haven’t heard it yet! it’s another release with 10/10 production, the atmosphere on that album is insane

There's a rumor that the track Alarm Call was originally called JACKO when still in demo and was inspired by Michael Jackson. That's why the beat sounds so 90's Jackson like. He wrote her an email in 2003 telling her how much he admired her creativity and asking about her inspirations for her work because she references nature and the planet a lot. You can find the transcript of the email online. Bjork is the best.

I think that her sound is always hers but constantly evolving. She keeps something from the past but Incorporates it into something new . I think if you ever get the chance to listen Chronologically , the transitions become more apparent. Nevertheless the album is pretty timeless and could still be played today. Coincidentally I see you have an OK Computer (Radiohead) frame behind you, Tom Yorke was inspired by this album , specifically Unravel , that it led him & the band in a sonic direction and the end result was 2000's( Kid A). Nellee Hooper is a British record producer. He and Bjork have been friends /collaborators on many projects. Tricky is also Brit, he's a Music producer/rapper. Bjork is hands on in each project, and does most of the musical arrangements and composition. The are a few versions of some of the songs i.e Family Tree , Howie's version etc. . Those are also amazing. The music video for All is Full of Love (is Howie's version, if not mistaken). I would Sincerely and Wholeheartedly recommend that you listen to all the rest , with the exception of Volta (2007ish ) It's a Polarizing album, either you like it or you don't, There's really no middle ground. Personally, My Favorite album is Utopia (2017). Her 2014 album , Vulnicura, is about her divorce to the Man she fell in love with in Vespertine (Vesper-teen). Oh lastly, If you get a chance to see her Music Videos, they will complete the vision her songs set up.

full length listens to her easy pop stuff, and then skimming the difficult stuff sounds like a recipe for a lot of "what the heck is this? Hmm i'm not feeling it" videos, it took me years to like Medulla. am I brave enough to claim it's better than Homogenic? Yeah, go on then (though I prefer Biophilia.) the fact that her fanbase is largely still hyper focused on the period between 1993 and 2001 should tell you a lot about the kind of immediate gratification (and views) you can expect though lol.

It's been a while! Glad to see you! Especially with another Bjork reaction! And if you are pronouncing "Bjork" like "Jerk" you are saying it properly. Bjork plays a HUGE part of the production of every album. She isn't just a vocalist....she's a true artist. I think you have to acclimate yourself to Bjork riding out the production on some songs. She's tends to get lost in the music itself. I'm still praying for an Aurora video. She just released a new album, and I know you will love it (although I recommend starting with her first album "all my demons greeting me as a friend.". Bjork is a fan of Aurora, and I can't recommend her music enough. A friend of mine just interviewed Aurora, and I'm literally ascending to a different dimension thinking about how he must have felt sitting with her. Also, I'd highly recommend checking out some live performances of Bjork. Her voice is exactly as amazing live as it is on the albums. She has such pure vocals. Personally, Unravel is a favorite for me from this album. There are some heart wrenching live performances of Unravel. I do think Verspertine wins over Homogenic. Bjork is just pure magic. In regards to her repeating the same sentiment in songs where you think she could have "added them to the last song" instead of making another song about it. Bjork, along with many great artists are going to write to their emotions opposed to writing or crafting their album intellectually. Janis Joplin comes to mind but instead of getting pissed like Bjork does, Janis writes a lot of songs repetitively about how she is sullen or should have done more to keep her man.
I like a well paced album but I wouldnt take it over the artists self expression.

Radiohead’s Kid A was directly influenced by Björk’s Homogenic, and Boards Of Canada’s Music Has The Right To Children. Three complicated records that also like Death Grips takes multiple listens to really absorb properly, because they are such alien records. And lord only knows that I don’t want to sound gatekeeper-ish but I picked this record up on release day at 20 years old, but at 46 and having deeply felt all of these emotions, this record just means something completely different. With Joga I think about my wife and daughter who know me like no one else, heal me when I hurt and their love pushes me to a state of emergency, scary in its intensity but equally as beautiful… and All Is Full Of Love, I remember being at a lonely place in my life, off of the heels of betrayal and letdown and being reminded that all is full of love but you have to trust it… shit 💩
You don’t seem to like long, repetitive songs so I’m not sure you’d be into Underworld but they make INCREDIBLE music that infuses elements of techno, breakbeat and drum and bass into it. Second Toughest Of The Infants is the first baddest of the bunch. Nelle Hooper has worked with MASSIVE ATTACK WHOSE RECORD MEZZANINE IS A CLASSIC AND NEEDS A REVIEW… and the pronounciation of Björk is Bee-yerk said in one syllable, there’s no “o” sound in there.
Thanks so much for the breakdown, too bad you didn’t get quite the same experience out of it that I do but I think the fact that you made a point to affirm that these are all very good songs, that’s good enough for me. Peace!

After Vespertine, Bjork started getting even more experimental. I love them all, but you really need to engage with the music and give the songs more than one listen to appreciate what's happening in each one. One of my favorite Bjork albums is her soundtrack for Dancer in the Dark. That movie is one of the best movies I'll never watch again, but it's nice to revisit some scenes through the songs.
