  • He was an excellent goal scorer and overall point producer, who was overshadowed by guys named Guy and Wayne.

      Sam Pollock could have gotten him because he thought it would like having Geoffrion, Dickie Moore and Beliveau... all born in 31. Could Lafleur and Dionne be the class of '51?
      He was finally persuaded otherwise because Dionne was too small (5'8"). Sigh...
      At least they could've gotten him back in 1975 by giving up cash which Detroit desperate needed (according to The Hockey Guy).

    Marcel Dionne had a great goaltender in Rogatien Vachon from 1975 to 1978 (runner up for the Vezina in 1975). The problem was like you said, after the triple crown line, Rogie had no real defense in front of him.

    Marcel Dionne is the *most underrated* players. Although, Ill considered Dionne as the greatest 2nd overall pick. Its unfortunate that he played in periods where he had to go against powerhouse like Montreal, Edmonton and Islanders He didnt have a good team even though he was part of the Triple Crown line.

    I am 58 years old. Marcel was one of my childhood idols. I remember how the Detroit fans jeered him after he demanded to be traded. He said he would reveal his reason(s) but never did (as best I know). Well now i have some clue. Detroit sports and live music concerts have the most loyal fans in the world. That is the truth, no bragging. The fans kept packing the old Olympia stadium venue, and the wings sucked. Point being, Marcel was a star player who according to this account, was not getting paid enough and saw no chance for advancement or to win a cup. The wing's management could have treated him better. Thanks so much for offering that clue. When Marcel demanded "trade me, or I will quit", few here in "hockey town" knew why. Marcel said he would reveal his reason(s). Now I have a better idea, and I don't blame him. He was still my childhood idol and I hated it when Detroit fans booed and jeered him. He had damn good reasons. Again, thanks for answering this 50 year old question

    I found this interesting scoring race : 71-72 Dionne 13th Lafleur 28: 72-73 Dionne 11th Lafleur 56: 73-74 Dionne 14th Lafleur 50: 74-75 Dionne 3rd Lafleur 4rth: 75-76 Lafleur 1rst Dionne 13th: 76-77 Lafleur 1rst Dionne 2nd: 77-78 Lafleur 1rst Dionne 18th: 78-79 Dionne 2nd Lafleur 3rd: 79-80 Dionne 1rst Lafleur 3rd: 80-81 Dionne 2nd Lafleur 50: 81-82 Dionne 7th Lafleur 38th: 82-83 Dionne 5th Lafleur 43rd, so in a nutshell from 71-83, Dionne was never outside the top 20 in scorers Lafleur was outside the top 20 6 times . in that time Dionne outscore Lafleur 1287 to 1171. Lafleurs peak coincided with the rise and fall of the Dynasty and quickly vanished a real rollercoaster. Also a member of team Canada in 72 (didn't play but was selected as a rookie) Team Canada 76 Both Lafleur and Dionne had 6 points in 7 games ...So who better?...i'm not sure it isn't Dionne

    Marcel Dionne, one the best hockey NHL player and one of the best Quebec product along Rocket Richard, Béliveau, Lafleur, Raymond Bourque and Lemieux. His drama was that he never stood on good teams which would have increased his already incredible output.

  • @slayerone61
    @slayerone61 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Played the majority of his career in no-pressure Los Angeles, where no one cared about the Kings or hockey in general. All he cared about was getting his 50 goals and 100 points a year. He never took his teams past the second round of the playoffs. It is a lot easier to score goals and points in a place where nothing is expected of you. I seriously doubt he would have had as easy a time playing in hockey-mad Montreal in the 1970s. Lafleur flourished and I think Dionne would have caved under the pressure. Lafleur or Dionne? It's a no-brainer, really. Guy Lafleur was the superior player, period.

    Being stuck on less productive teams dogged a few great players in this era. I think about Dionne, Perrault, Sittler, and JP Parise in particular, but also Martin, Ciccerelli, Denis Savard, and Borje Salming. Then there was Hadfield, Gilbert, Retalle and Park on the rangers team that just couldnt crack the dynasty teams of that era. Despite not winning cups, these guys were well loved in their home arenas. For Dionne and Perrault in particular to rack up numbers like they did on non marquee teams speaks highly of their skill as players. Would LaFleur have done the same if he were in Buffalo or Detriot or LA.....? Interesting thought.

    I'm still a bit confused why Lafleur is ranked so much higher than Dionne. Dionne's has way many more good seasons and never played on any championship winning teams.
    Lafleur had 6 great seasons including 4 championship seasons and was lackluster before and after that.
    Dionne's all time stats are also great. He was 3rd in goals, assists and points behind Gretzky and Howe for a long time.
    The only explanation I heard was that Lafleur was better on defense with his backchecking. Dionne's numbers were higher because he was the only scorer on his team (at least that's the theory that was given to me.)

  • @doctorx3
    @doctorx3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    People often dismiss Marcel as "that guy who vanished in the playoffs." I feel like it's a half truth. He did well if (and only if) Dave Taylor was healthy. And even then, I feel like Dionne deserved a power forward who was better than Taylor. I love Dave Taylor, but he deserved a power forward on the level of Bill Barber or Lanny McDonald, who could open space for him and score goals.

    I wonder if the Canadiens made an attempt to trade for Dionne in 1975. Detroit just wanted cash and Canadiens wouldn't have had to give up anything valuable. Play there years and then go to LA in 1979 to begin the Triple Crown Line. The Triple Crown Line didn't begin (as I understand it) in January 1979 anyway.

    Rule 639 | Tripping/Clipping/Leg Checking/Slew Footing
    (Note 1) Tripping is the act of placing a stick, knee, foot, arm, hand or elbow in such a manner that causes his opponent to lose balance or fall.

    (Note) However, no penalty shall be assessed under this rule if, in the opinion of the Referee, the playerwas clearly hook-checking or poke-checking the puck for the purpose of gaining possession.
