That’s called a “mode”. There’s a mode for every time you play the major scale starting on a note different than the 1. Eg, the harmonic minor scale is actually the major scale starting on the 6. So A minor is actually c major, but starting on the 6, rather than the 1.
Starting on the IV is not really a mode, since you can play modes over the IV. It's simply just starting on the IV. Modes are for melody, while the roman numeral system is relative to the harmonic center. @@peadookie
@@peadookie its the nashville number system its not math or modes its just the order of the chord based on its key, once you learn this it makes figuring out songs a lot easier. At least for most pop style stuff ,it starts getting a little complicated when you listen to more complex jazzy stuff. But its an incredibly powerful tool to figure out songs and also to communicate with other musicians in a session or for improvising etc.
I think what I said may have been misinterpreted here. The Nashville number system is exactly what I was using to describe modes, which, yes, are the major scale when starting from another note. It’s a _modality_ of playing the major scale. That’s why you can play a related major scale over Phrygian, for example.
The great thing is that he seems to just have an expert knowledge of music, and specifically guitar, so he just happened to apply that to Polyphia, but it sounds like he could do the same with any band.
Man, this video keeps coming back to my fyp and I don't usually comment but you really need to make this a full song! I see it sounding like something I would listen on repeat.
My god this was much more interesting than what i thought it'd be. Plus i didnt't realize how much knowledge you had in music before. Very fcking impressive to be so clear, concise while also demonstrating everything in such a little amount of time.
Also, instant sub, your content is densely useful and well structured - 3 minutes cover what other youtubers would stretch to dozens of minutes. Thank you.
I can't believe you managed to fit that much clear info into 3 and a half minutes Well done! I've never listened to Polyphia, but that breakdown gave me some wonderdul insight into the guitar!
The amount of doors 🚪 you have opened for me, is awesome! Between Polyphia and your teachings, my musical style has completely changed. Even my taste in music. I was just a simple “4 on the floor” metal head. Not anymore. I LOVE metal. But as far as my playing ability, and creativity, I’m so happy with my growth as a player. THANK YOU. 🎸
Useful video added to my collection of other useful guitar stuff. Trying to experiment more with polyphia pop style since i been playing metal for many years
i struggle to play a single line of polyphia, yet this guy can dissect the style so accurately and write songs in that style! it’s time for me to give up guitar
Thank you for your analysis! I couldn't analyze it properly myself, but It proves my idea that Polyphia is very influenced by Japanese music although they might not be too vocal about it. But they jokingly called themselves "anime protagonists" at some point. The most popular chord progression in Japanese music is IV - V -iii -vi btw.
The concepts in this video are also great for people who absolutely do not want to sound like Polyphia. Great concepts that can be applied to any genre to find new angles.
I have always had a tough time finding chords around a specific note (chord melodies) without spending several minutes on it. Like, I've learnt the inversions for chords by heart with the relevant scale notes on the high e string - the minor 7, major 7, dominant 7 chords. Check out SGL with Jared's chord series they're great - but I still have a long way to go before I can do the same thing on the other high strings (G and B), let alone while switching between different chords so fluently. I've been learning guitar for a few months now and I'm only a third of the way there to where I want to be lol, at least it's measurable progress. It feels weird kind of learning all the chord tones up and down the neck but it's really helping with my playing ability. Maybe I'll learn to sweep pick lol.
Sounds like you're already doing pretty good for a few months tho. I've been playing for 5 years and if you asked me 4 years ago what a dom7 chord was I would've said whaaaat? - tbf until Animals as Leaders changed my life I was listening to pretty basic chug chug metalcore so I wouldn't have known that stuff anyways. Sounds like you're on a good track already, especially if you've only been playing for a few months. And yes do learn to sweep! It can either be super cliche and generic or refreshing and creative. Just depends what you do with it.
So you're saying you're having a hard time finding chords that go with a specific note? Is that what you mean? Like if you gave a melody and you want to write comping/harmony/chords behind it?
@@ZachMcCordProg yeah, I find it hard finding the right chord to play where the highest note is the melody note. If you know the chord to play and what note should be played in the melody, assuming it's a part of the chords scale it's technically pretty straight forward to find the correct inversion, you just pick the notes of the chord with the melody on top, but the part that's difficult for me is doing so on the fly like more experienced guitarists like Danny or Tim/Scott can. This is because I don't know all the inversions and chord tones up and down the neck like someone with 10 years experience would, so I have to spend like 5-10 minutes working out a single chord. I feel like being able to do that really gives you a lot of freedom while playing. I've found that even being able to do this for the high e string has improved my playing but that took a like a month of effort to learn properly.
@@mrtoast244I say if you know what you’re key you can play the chords in those key like how he was talking bout most of the songs starting on the 4 chord, play the first melody idea with the 4 chord, I think figuring out what key you’re in is what will be hard
Tim is secretly taking notes "go on, part two" LOL
Danny might be teaching the class but Tim wrote the curriculum
Aw hell naw….
Clicked expecting a meme, found a 200 IQ deconstruction instead
omg for realLll!1, like im music savvy but wow this is my next level for solo play i think
Polyphia: Just the two of us. We can make it if we try. Just the two of us. You and I.
LMAO same exact thought I was like WHERE IS EVERYONE?? Looking thru the comments
Damn I hear it. Amazing catch
It's like both a meme and a highly educational vid at the same time, it's absolute genius. I can hear the drums playing already when you play.
I love the math you did analyzing the chord structures. Had no idea that only two started with the one that’s crazy

My dude has a PhD on Polyphia; that was awesome! Thanks for sharing your huge knowledge
The great thing is that he seems to just have an expert knowledge of music, and specifically guitar, so he just happened to apply that to Polyphia, but it sounds like he could do the same with any band.

The real way to write a Polyphia riff is to run random pop song chords through an arpeggiator and then just play whatever it spits out.
😂
you've basically just described OD lmao
You're an absolute genius, man 👌 thank you for sharing your mindset. And your "how to write a Polyhia riff" is my all time favorite, so good.
This is by far the best tutorial on how to write in the Style of Polyphia. Amazing. Thank you so much.
you know he’s a master because of how easily understood this video is
Man this is the most Strait up no frills break down of a polyphia analysis I've ever seen. Well done my dude.

Bro literally exposed Polyphia in a politeful way!
You are a genius. I feel like I’m gonna spend months trying to fully understand a 3 minute video
Danny your videos lift me up and I greatly thank you for all of them.
Mind blown, thank you so much for this breakdown Danny! Polyphia's song structure makes so much more sense now!
This is the best video i have seen on youtube since 2005
So helpful! Keep up the great work!
Thank you Danny for a more explained context
Dude, this was mindblowing hahahaha Well done!
truly encyclopedic knowledge, thoughtful presentation & just plain cool overall
This is actually so on the money for getting people to understand the nuances of guitar playing while also building technical structure to a song
Also, instant sub, your content is densely useful and well structured - 3 minutes cover what other youtubers would stretch to dozens of minutes. Thank you.
This guy is such a musical genius. Also he covers every polyphia song the minute it releases which is kinda crazy imo

2 things:
1. Amazing lesson. That was extremely well explained and demonstrated.
2. I love your guitar!
I'm pretty sure that's a Tim Henson signature model, though I havent' seen it in that color

That beginning melody is the line “I’m four five seconds from willin” by Rihanna which I think is accidental and awesome
Cool research and great playing, man !!
That's too much information. Thank you Danny for blessing us with this one
Dude. You deserves much much more subscribers. You're amazing. 😎 👍 🔥
i struggle to play a single line of polyphia, yet this guy can dissect the style so accurately and write songs in that style! it’s time for me to give up guitar
Holy shit. I’ve learn more from this video than from an actual teacher
Excellent work, dude 👍👍
As soon as he played the first chord i was sold.
