    Not sure if you ever went back in the 4 years since this was made, but you really need to try more variety of Polish meats. Kielbasa varies in flavor pretty significantly, and you really must try boczek (smoked bacon, usually comes in large blocks).
    The sandwich you made was fairly traditional. Ever since I could eat solid food, my mother made open-faced sammies with a little mayo, a little mustard, two or three types of meat, pickles, tomato, and topped with a slice of hard-boiled egg. I've been making them for myself same way all these decades later.
    Smacznego (Bon appetit)

      Best part is, this is only a good supermarket bread by Polish standards. You can get some artisanal, top notch quality bread in local bakeries for pretty cheap (maybe 1.5-2x the cost of good supermarket bread). During pandemic these bakeries are also a yeast lifesavers - you can always buy some there, bakery is always stocked even if all supermarkets in town are out :D

    Dawtona and Roleski in the thumbnail, good choices :D That Witt juice is a lot of sugar, but its great. Also, a tip - in Poland, word "juice" (sok) is reserved by law only for pure 100% juice, so it's very easy to distinguish juice based drinks and "nectares" pretending to be juice. No "sok" on the label, it ain't one :D

    My mom was 100% Polish and was the best cook in the world. However, she did not like Polish Sausage at all. That's one of the few Polish things we didn't eat growing up. She passed when I was a teenager and I sure do miss her cooking. (And baking, Lord have mercy, nobody could do desserts like her) I never even knew instant mashed potatoes existed until she was gone. She made everything from scratch. I've always wanted to try more Polish food as I've only eaten what she made us. I'm quite certain there's a ton of stuff that just wasn't either popular in the village where my mom's family lived in Poland and what she could get my dad to eat. It is neat to see different Polish food. Thanks so much for sharing.

    I've been to poland with my family last year. When we had just arrived, I remember us parking the camper van on some farmland in order to have a dinner stop. Then, there suddenly was a car heading towards us from the farmers house, a guy stepped out and we were already apoligising, trying to tell him we were about to leave, but the man didn't understand english well enough. However, he just seemed curious and even excited by having visitors. He jumped in his car again, drove away, and came back later with fresh tomantoes, unions and lovely bread, as a gift.

    I'm glad you liked it :) The "authentic" "polish sandwich" is an open one, with just the bottom bread slice as a slice for topping, usually cut in smaller pieces (circular pieces of sausage and gherkins). In some regions of poland, people would get very upset if you don't put (non-salted) butter spread on your bread :) I personally recommend you try this stack: bread, butter, [polish sliced ham], cheese slices, tomato, gherkins. Get the sliced meat from a polish shop with meat section - pork loin or gammon (pl. "baleron") - or ask them to give you 10 slices of couple recommended ones. They will usually have some "hunter's special" or something. Most meats will be "uniform", but you may find some like "salceson" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salceson where you might find skin or other variety. You can ask them to cut to weight or number of slices for smaller quantities.

    • @sebimoe
      @sebimoe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rogerhudson9732 You have to ask what they have, the names may vary regionally and especially translated to English. Ask for wild or "forest" animal meat and you may find some deer/boar specialities, but only some shops will have it and it may be only a limited time thing. I think you will find biggest assortment in pork maybe beef and chicken but it's best to ask. By the way I didn't mention anything about sausage (polish "kiełbasa" means just "sausage") - I'm not an expert on it but the shops usually have an assortment of these. Often wild/forest meat comes as sausage or pate.

      @Atomic Shrimp Don't let these "traditionalists" shame you. There's no wrong way to cut kielbasa.
      As I'm sure you heard by now, the tradition cut is a 45 degree angle so you wind up with oval slices, but I've seen plenty of old polish ladies do straight "medallion" cuts as well. Grilled kielbasa is typically served in 4-6 inch lengths sliced down the middle (presumably so it doesn't roll off the plate 😉). Again, there's no real wrong way.

      I'll try eating the sausage skin next time - I just wasn't sure about it - but now I think of it, it was very similar in feel and texture to the skin on Saveloy sausages. I sliced the sausages and gherkins lengthways on purpose - long pieces don't fall out of the sandwich so easily.
      Can't wait for the next visit to the shop - so much else to try - do you have any recommendations?

    • @nikka00
      @nikka00 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't know what can you buy in your shop, but I recommend "kiełbasa polska" (translated means just polish sausage but it's a specific kind of sausage, i'ts kind of "raw" sausage you can eat straight or dry it little bit, or fry , i'ts yuuuummmyyyy, you need to ask as I wrote - in polish). Meat's with very brown skin are not naturally smoked, so I don't recommend. If you like gherkins, you can try "smalec", it's lard (I know :)) with carmelised onions and spices. It goes great spread (smeared?) on toasted rye bread, sprinkled with salt and gherkins on side :).
      Thats from the top of my head :).

    Mmmm, gotta try those blueberry jaffas. They sell many pickled items, all great for pizza toppings. Try the pickled green tomatoes if you get the chance. They aren't bitter like you'd expect.

    The sausage is called kiełbasa (I've heard that name is also known in English), and you do not really have to 'unwrap' it as it is a meat-filled intestine, so its perfectly edible

      Thanks - interesting - because I also bought kielbasa potted in a jar - I didn't make the connection

      Thanks - yes, I wasn't paying proper attention when I picked it up - I have bought potted kielbasa chunks in this brand of jars before, but you're right - this was sort of potted ham. Very delicious

    Surprised I've just seen this. You should try and make bigos, polish hunters stew and do a video on it. Can find all the ingredients in the polish shop. My polish friend made it and it's bacome one of my favourite foods.

    No, you do not peel skin of a sausage! Secondly - first some nice butter on the bread, sausage, mustard on top, then gherkin and/or tomato and Polish sandwiches are open :) You do not put another slice of bread on top, unless you take it to work/school or picnic:) But overall - nicely done. Hope you discover more Polish tastes and produce!

    Idk whats available in your store and video is quite old but I can recommend you kabanosy (dry sausage). Traditional or chili. There are lot of flavours. My second shot of what you might like is pasztetowa ze szczypiorkiem ("creamy" pork pate with chives). Last things are probably diary products like curd cheese, cottage cheese etc.

    Bread, smoked sausage, pickled gherkins and mustard, these are all things available in every supermarket, how would you have never tried these without a polish grocery? I find this with most polish food you can find a similar version of whatever they have here in England

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  4 ปีที่แล้ว
