Webinar | Production of Bamboo Charcoal, Briquettes and Pellets and their Applications

The way we learn and share experiences is changing. INBAR’s themed online webinar series brings bamboo and rattan experts from all over the world together to educate, inspire and discuss, without the need for travel.
Bamboo charcoal can be an option of clean and renewable energy for rural communities in developing countries, where it can be processed with simple techniques and equipment. In Africa, there is huge potential for bamboo biomass to substitute wood biomass, to reduce deforestation and supply a number of energy products: bamboo firewood, charcoal, briquettes, combustible gases and valuable by-products, like bamboo vinegar. This session will introduce the processing techniques for bamboo charcoal, briquettes and fuel pellets, and their applications.
Speakers:
Prof. Zhang Wenbiao, doctoral supervisor at Zhejiang A & F University, Deputy Director of Provincial Key Laboratory of Bamboo Science and Technology Education. Professor Zhang has long been engaged in the education, researches and social services of bamboo charcoal utilisation. He has played a leading role in the identification of national and industrial standards of bamboo charcoal in China. He is a registered expert of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)’s Task Force ISO/TC 296, and Chair of the Bamboo Charcoal Branch of the China Society of Bamboo Industry.
Prof. Liu Zhijia, researcher at the China International Center for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR), PhD in Wood Science and Technology. Professor Liu been conducting biomass energy research at the USDA Forest Product Laboratory and West Virginia University as a visiting scholar. At ICBR, he has been mainly engaged in carbonisation and thermochemical conversion of bamboo biomass to value-added bio-products.
Mr. Adane Berhe Kerso, General Manager of Adal Industrial P. L. C. Ethiopia, Board and Chairman of Ethiopian National Intellectual Disability Association, Board Member of the Africa Convention and Exhibition Center, President of Gelan Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association, and Founder and Board Member of the Ethiopian Manufacturing Industry Association.
