      Ryan do you think the GH5 and Atomos compete with the GH6 or will the GH6 basically do the same without adding a monitor?
      I have a Atomos I go from Camera to Camera at times and I would hate to be duplicating another Ninja V specifically for the GH5 if the GH6 could somewhat match or better this combined

    I agree there. I own both the Panasonic and the Sony. The Sony can see in the dark. But who is shooting a shot to see in the dark? I can get great night shots out of the
    GH5. And if noise is an issue a little Neat Video and some sharpening can get it right back.

      Hi I am using Gh4,GH5,5s BMPCC4K because of my high Iso usage I always use Neat to kill the noise and resharp afterwards...I set the noise reduction to -5 and use mostly VLog cine D.
      Really neat is a killer feature for noise reduction image look clean and beautiful...high iso in GH5 3200-6400 the noise is not so much a problem but the color shifting...but fast lens are helping and anyway I have GH5s and Bmpcc4k and I use offen above 5000 iso.

    Mate, perfectly summed up. The GH5 is an absolute weapon for what they cost, especially on the used market. I was genuinely considering selling my a7s III to come back to the GH fold with the GH6, however that AF pulsing (see Tony Northrup video) is just a no go for me as a solo content creator. For someone like yourself though who spends most of the time behind the camera I think the GH6 will be another class redefining classic. The dynamic range boost has the dynamic range of the GH6 just a whisker off the Panasonic FF S1H and may actually be more than the Canon R5. The oversampled 4k is looking like it is very close to matching resolving power of the likes of the Sony A1 and Canon R5 as well (those obviously have 8k as well).
    Main reason I went to the a7s III was I mainly shoot nightime landscape and Milky Way videos with the strongest source of light being moonlight, but also often only starlight. I am absolute agreement with you that the GH5 is not that bad in low light such as cityscapes or other environments with some ambient light. You are exactly right in saying it has far more to do with the clear aperture of the lens you put Infront of it. With my Voigtlander 17.5mm f/0.95 I shot in caves and city street festivals at night with excellent results with the camera at ISO 800. The GH6 footage is looking clean at ISO 6400, so with the correct glass (which is also true of Full Frame cameras, they aren't magic) I suspect pretty much all low light usage apart from very niche use cases such as mine will be a total non issue.

    I own the Lumix S5 and the G9. I'm going to sell my G9 and pre-order the GH6. Would it be reasonable to use the GH6 as my A camera for video except in low light and my S5 as the B camera? I would then use my S5 as my A camera when it comes to photos and the GH6 for my B camera for photos. That seems like they would compliment each other perfectly.

    Hi Ryan - great work, as always. I’m wondering about low(er) light performance on the GH6 as I often shoot music / concert shots where lighting can be a challenge. Love my G9 and GH5, especially with Sigma 16 or 56 f1.4.

    I have two GH5’s and a GH5 Mk2. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. The internal ProRes appeals to me as all my other cameras have Atomos recorders attached. A GH6 means that I could add another camera to my arsenal without buying another Atomos recorder.

    I didn't realize that image quality is a casualty of upping the frame rate...Thank you for sharing that...I think that's the decision-maker for me to choose the 5 over the 6 because if going from 60 to 120 will affect the image quality, then I wouldn't use 120 much, which was what made me interested in the 6 to begin with...Does that make sense? Am I understanding this correctly?

    • @chrisklugh
      @chrisklugh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Based on what you said, a G9 would be a good upgrade for you. The GH5 will have video features you probably wont ever use. Save the money, but get the upgrade. ;)

    • @prelude1218
      @prelude1218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisklugh I've thought about a G9 many times, but if a G10 has a bit better low light performance with the new sensor, then I don't mind waiting for that. I might also just bite the bullet on a cheaper G9, then upgrade to a G10 in a few years when that price drops.

    • @chrisklugh
      @chrisklugh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@prelude1218 Don't expect sensors to become magically better low light devises. It really matters how much light you have. The only place it can improve is with computational imagery like you see in phones. As good as that is for a phone, its not likely to be be as good for professional work. The reason is control. Essentially what your left with is a CPU created jpeg. Once that file is created, lots of data is gone and does not give editors/color grades as much room.
      I personally think the Dynamic Boost feature in the GH6 is kinda mostly useless. For one, you need to be shooting at 2000 ISO, which means anywhere you have light, your going to not want it. In low light situations it could help, like concerts/weddings. But at that point, why would you not pick a FF camera that will still have better low light and dynamic range in those situations? And your not gimped at 2000 ISO.
      So if your looking for an upgrade, which it does not sound like your after, the G9 will be a nice improvement over what you have. The gap between the G9 and the future G10 will be much shorter then your G85 is to the G9. You will spend less and get more with that G9.

    • @prelude1218
      @prelude1218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisklugh yeah, low light is more of a nice to have. Don’t really want to go FF as I’m a big fan of the smaller and cheaper MFT lenses. For me, I’m mostly looking for a better buffer and increased rate for RAW burst photos, and the autofocus updates in the G9/GH5. Toddlers are tricky to capture! I might also look at a UHS-II card for the buffer increases first, but haven’t done so yet.

    • @prelude1218
      @prelude1218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisklugh As a side note, dynamic boost is still pretty useful. Especially for photos, as it kicks in at 800 ISO. 2000 ISO minimum is only for video.

    GH5s is definitely still the camera to go with for low light shooting.
    GH5 vs GH6 is really no competition. I would upgrade to the GH6 in that case.
    I might keep my GH5s for a second camera on those run and gun shoots. The GH5s is gonna do great in low light scenes and the GH6 is going to have higher frame rate 4K and other capabilities that the GH5s does not. Hopefully Panasonic will drop a GH6s that would be sweet for filmmakers.
    Keep in mid there are many features on both the GH5 and GH6 that the GH5s does not have. The GH5 and GH6 have a much higher megapixel for stills than the GH5s. The GH5s leans more towards filmmaking than versatility.

    I've got my GH6 and so far I've only had the chance to take photos, with work commitments getting in the way of playtime. Just a heads up, there is no software out there at the moment that will work with the new Panasonic RAW files. Panasonic suggest you download a third party software called Silkypix. This software is so buggy and unstable that it is basically unusable. The only workaround at the moment is to shoot RAW and JPEG. You will be able to edit the JPEGS straight away but you will have to sit on the RAW files for possibly months until either Panasonic or a Third Party software company find a way to work with the new RAW photo files.
    This is an epic fail for Panasonic's Flagship camera, costing thousands of pounds or dollars, to create RAW photos that are unusable at the moment.
    I've still got my GH5 as well, for the time being.

    How about a complete set of GH6 specific photography and video tutorials based on that camera. A complete set of GH5 specific photography and video tutorials based on that camera use. Then in the future, specific photography and video tutorials based on those cameras. A bit of redundant work with slight and some not so slight differences. I was thinking you could package each tutorial up for sale as being specific for that camera.
    Or
    Filming your personal interactions, as a lesson plan, with some motivated but pretty green photography enthusiast in the field, teaching him the ropes, while he makes correctable mistakes. Sell that package.
