    I think that’s good they make something more affordable for ppl to be able to create with that helps one to feel the nostalgia of what others used before. If you can make the vibes you want I say go for it!

    I'm with Roger on this. The samples from the original Linn drums are on the internet and can be loaded into a MPC, Maschine, SP404, or some other modern machine and there you are. Sure, they added functionality over the original but most people who idolize the original can have those sounds on what they already have.
    I say it's their money and if it brings you joy, go for it. I'm not above that. I have a Kurzweil PC4-7 and Volca FM2. Both can load DX7 patches. At the same time they can make new, unique sounds too so it's not exactly the same. The PC4-7 has other sound engines too so you're not stuck with just the FM engine. The same could said of the Roland Integra 7 and D-05 in my possession. They have alot of reachback in that gear too.
    Nostalgia sells.

    Yes, the Fender Stratocaster is protected by a patent. Leo Fender patented the Stratocaster on April 10, 1956. Fender has also trademarked the headstock design of the Stratocaster, but not the body shape. However, Fender lost a court case in 2009 to trademark the body shape of the Stratocaster, Telecaster, and Precision guitar. The court ruled that the body shape is so common that it's considered generic.
    Fender decided, long ago, not to pursue legal battles to protect their trademark of the body shape and just focus on trademark violations of their headstock. Actually because of precedents you CAN copy the Fender headstock shape so long as you don't put any labels on the traditional spot where the decal goes

    I grew up in the 80s as a teenager. people always talked about as the future in terms of synth. no one was looking for sounds of past which is one of the reasons interesting synth innovations came out at that time. For context, that was almost 40 years ago. In my opinion, technology has been stagnant for the last 25 years.

      @Guitarist888, I agree with you that there are differences in sound, but that isn’t quite what I said. Notice I mentioned “in the mix”. Once any of that kit has been put through effects pedals, compression, and the various other things that 99% of people are adding (DAW or hardware) to make a track and then it’s multitracked along with other sounds the differences disappear. Not to mention that with 808’s and 909’s there are individual variations from one unit to another that can be nearly as significant as the difference between one OG device and a Behringer clone.
      If you’re planning to send a dry signal with a very minimalist style the differences will show up, otherwise good luck hearing them no matter how adept and experienced your ear is. Appreciate the dialogue with someone that has a reasonable take by the way.

Getting the timing of the swing precise is nearly impossible because that swing is also dependent on imperfections that are random. Random is rather hard to do on any digital device, even if the random stems from imperfections in the timing crystals of a processor. And then their is the mythique surrounding it. It is in the Smith with a reason, right. Donald should go see it, when he's not to busy playing golf 😂.

    Another spin on your war analogy would be that Behringer is selling you an experience. Everyone already has the sounds but now you get to have the instrument in front of you. (Sort of.) They’re selling you the experience because there’s a market out there with customers who believe it’s worth the money even if they have the sounds on their hard drive. Lots of people actually buy things for how it looks in the studio. (Crazy as that sounds.)
    As far as Roger Linn, he doesn’t really like reiterations of things that he feels are already complete. He didn’t even want the MPC 60 II but eventually gave in.
    Great video and perspective. It’s a debate where I can see both sides of it.

    Roger Linn believes in creating new ways of creating music. He would not believe in improving any item which he thought had been maximally developed.I agree with you with the guitar analogy .I think what is important is that the simple drum machine as developed in the eighties represented a comfortable way of producing and creating music. For a long time I thought that someone should create a modern drum machine (with sampling/new sounds/ and midi) with a eighties interface large enough be comfortable to use especially when your vision is not the same as in your twenties.

    You couldn't have When Doves cry without this machine. Facts.

    • @henrikfisch
      @henrikfisch 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is exactly the point: Of course »we« could have »When Doves Cry« without the machine because »we« just need to listen to this song on any streaming service, »we« can buy a CD or Vinyl or even a DVD. Prince couldn't have this song without the »LM-1« at that point in time.
      We of course could do songs without the Linn-originals. We just need the sounds as samples and put them in any sample-playing device. For example (just out of my head): any Akai »MPC«, most Elektron-devices (»Octatrack«, »Digitakt (II)«), NIs »Maschine«, Abletons »Push Standalone«, and so on. You can even put the sounds into software-samplers or directly on the tracks of your DAW. Hell ... if you want to make music (!) you have hundreds of options. A Behringer »LM Drum« is totally useless.
      If you just want to have fun ... yes go ahaead. But that's the difference: Prince just used what was available at that time. He wasn't caught into some fancy nerd retro machine dream. He wanted to make music.
