Black Myth and Monkie Kid connoisseurs: if we missed anything/ got anything wrong, let us know here! We tried doing the best comparison with the knowledge we have but are definitely able to make mistakes!
I believe both make 2 sides of the same coin, as MK is the silly, light hearted show that follows the absurdity of JTTW, while black myth shows us what its like when the characters get serious, a more realistic take which i think adds to the awesomeness that is Sun Wukong and his tale. Both compliment the story in ways the other doesn't and that's amazing.
That’s a great analysis!!
But never think the Lego can't be serious it have 2 seasons worth of identity crisis I'd say that's serious
@@firdanharbima6997 yeah of course, though Black Myth Wukong is much more serious atmosphere and vibes, let alone the story. Ofc LMK is serious, and it does it well, but its also comedic, something Black Myth doesn't really do as to keep its feeling of realism
What is genius about JTTW is it is absurdly fun and incredibly dark at the same time…Therefore you get the two different takes!
It’s nice to see some Monkie Kid representation
YESSS we honestly need more talk about it. Such a good show and amazing sets.
@@Danielewa.builds Some of the best writing I’ve seen. And from a LEGO show?
But I couldn’t buy his Lego Racer Car.😔
ehh..the show is highly overrated
@@RebelMonkeyRiffs i like both sun wukong representation is incredible
Lmk is show good
Lore wise, demon bull king real form is a giant white bull, so black myth wukong has a more accurate representation
Monkie kid is such a good Show.
7:42 I think in WuKong lore Chang'e is not really a moon goddess but a divine deity who exiled herself on the moon, cause the moon has its own deity/goddess.
When the Old Monkey mentioned LBD in the game, I was baffled that he stated that Monkey King had a romantic relationship with her. Crazy role reversal
Well crazy since monkey king killed her in the journey to the west because she tried to eat the monk
It's definitely a homage to Stephen Chow's "A Chinese Odyssey" along with the BaijexSpider romance, the mirror and putting on the golden hoop again scene. Many later adaptations started taking inspiration from the two part film and introduced love interests for the main characters. It might also be the first to introduce a reincarnated Monkey King so my personal headcanon is that The Destined One is a Zhi Zunbao/Joker proxy until further is known.
in the second phase of the fight with the hundreds eyes daoist, he created a domain where you are surrounded by hundreds of yellow orb that shoot laser at you. hundred eyes is also just a way people called him, and reason is that he is a centipede demon…with hundred legs
OKAY THANK YOU 🙏🏻 that makes much more sense
I think Lego has done a great job with the characters. I do like the simplicity of them. Of course that helps in making the minifigs themselves and probably helps with the animation.
I like the Lego Pigsy the best. Of course seeing the Monkie Kidd sets first probably influenced my opinion. I envisioned a more human like Pigsy when listening to the book.
I didn’t know you listened to the book, that’s awesome! I agree that Lego’s designs are definitely top notch and still manage to respect the original source material.
Monkey Prince mention!!!
Love to see more people acknowledging it exists. Even if it’s not the best adaptation.
Love the comparisons between LMK and BM:W.
Kratos vs Wukong? Absolutely Wukong. He’s invincible😅
Exactly 😭
Kratos will exhaust himself out before realizing he was fighting a monkey clone 💀
@@jinnimoo A clone that would be playing tricks, and not taking it serious.
Grandfather vs Grandson..🤔
Finally, someone else who sees Nezha as their all-time favorite!! /lh This was a really fun analysis of both depictions of Journey to the West - it also is finally convincing me to check out Black Myth: Wukong after hearing about it for so long!
Yooo glad there’s someone else out there! Love the various artistic representations of this mythology, it’s so cool!
LEGO MONKIE KID MENTIONED WHAT THE FUCK IS A NORMAL EPISODE RELEASE SCHEDULE🔥🔥🔥
HI MAT
@@00fxer CERN HI
Wow Monkey Prince mention
i mean the creepy feel of the characters in the game makes it feel way more accurate, like for some of them it really feels like thats what it would look like if it was real
Exactly! Like I'm not expecting the true form of a guy that has eyes on his torso to be pretty (One-Hundred Eyed Demon King/Daoist)
that's a lot of fun. didn't know lego made those
Omg never knew all these monkie kid facts
Bro just had a monkey king deep dive 💀
i believe these 2 were shown the 2 sides of wukong perfectlly
black myth shows his power
an unstopable beast that can only be beaten by the buddha himself
a beast that can destroy heaven if he wants
but monkey kid shows his goofy side
all he wants is what he wants
he wants a title he will get his title or else he will be grumpy
he gets bored easly thats why he eaten the peaches of immortality
id say both represent wukong perfectlly
Great points 👆🏻
Th book, JTTW, is actualy VERY dark, and BMWK is pretty faithfull to the vibe.
Moreover, mythologies are alway very dark and it's the modern versions that decided to tame the stories to be able to monetize them to children and to a less "dark" and "scary" era, in general.
Yeah it’s pretty interesting. Kinda cool to see the ways different artists take aspects of a mythology to tell different stories.
Journey to the West is more like a fairy tale for adults. The book does not avoid bloody descriptions, but this does not mean that the atmosphere of the book is very dark. On the contrary, the atmosphere in the book is mainly interesting and relaxed.
I really enjoy both versions. They are so extremely different in style but both cool and fun in their own right.
How was the actual book journey to the west? I’ve never read it but thinking abt it.
It’s awesome! There are several different translations/abridgments in English. A good starting point is the book Monkey King which is a slightly abridged version of JTTW from 2021.
MONKIE KIDDD MENTIONED LETSS GOOOOO
Yessss another MK fan! Love to see it
5:03 Personal opinion though: LMK might be following the JTTW poem's description of "Nine heads joined together to form a ring" But it still weird for them to make him claim the name Xiangliu, the actual serpent with 9 human heads, the closest you can get to a Hydra in chinese myth.
12:44 Except I'm pretty sure Tang Xuanzhang is pretty young, since the novel has him meeting his mom at 18 🤔
Correct me if I'm wrong though,I might forgot about some parts
13:13 I'm curious if that hat is pretty common around the time (because I've seen photos of them being worn by monks irl). Also it's probably just cause that depiction has been pretty consistent throughout all JTTW adaptations.Plus, both LMK & BMW references the 80s series.
14:33 Ngl I'm pretty confused too cause pretty sure the book doesn't mention anything lion-like
Honestly,I personally enjoy both (and both has their own shortcomings, like LMK dragging out their lore like...well,a typical tv show to keep the audience watching). When I want something more cute & funny I watch Monkie Kid.When I want something more creepy & dark (I like it cause I think it fits JTTW's setting that has tons of demons,I noticed that the downside of being introduced to JTTW through LMK is not knowing a lot of demons are genuinely terrifying. If only there's a movie in BMW's style,I'd watch it) I watch BMW gameplays & lore (haa broke boi).Cause beside liking the darker atmosphere,BMW's lore is so interesting with the corrupted pantheons,Wukong's plan to free himself and all that.LMK does have its own conspiracy plot, but shame on Lego on messing it up cause I see how good it could be.
Wow, it’s a privilege to get such an in-depth and comprehensive comment! Thank you for sharing all of your thoughts 🙏🏻
What about Enslaved: Odyssey to the West?
You think there should be a mod for Monkey from Enslaved to be playable in Black Myth Wukong?
Wow that’s a pretty unique adaption of the MK story too! Maybe there will be some crossover one day, who knows..
The book is very cartoony and has cartoon logic and physics. I do like the 4K hd hyper realistic look. But the book was a cartoon. Characters heads swelled when they yelled. When Wukong's was experiencing the head tightening spell, the book says his head is hourglass shaped. Whenever pigsy is being a sex pest, wukong grabs his ear and pulls him off whoever like brock from pokemon.
When Tripitaka gets scared "his spirit fled his body in fight" he falls off the hourse almost multiple times a chapter. He freezes for a half a hour at one point cuz he has to talk to a hot lady and hes terrified. He gets put into a arranged marriage because he gets hit in the head with a embroidery dodge ball. The book has a hotspring episodes with the spider sisters with pigsy turning into a fish to spy on them.
The book is hard to read in live action. If that makes sense. The book really is a anime and a lot of the jokes and gags have LMK kinetic energy.
Both are wonderful. But lmk was the thing that made me read the full non-abridged book. Jttw is a profoundly silly book, and LMK just understands that. It's spent hundreds of years being a bedtime story for millions of kids for generations.
I love black myth Wukong for being a drak fantastic. We have enough 1-1 accurate retellings that i like the more different continuations or retellings.
Like in Lmk Macaque is a combination of Wukong's monkey generals who tease him for not knowing contentment. Hes the Macaque King (who was a girl in the book) from the demon brotherhood. And obviously, his namesake the 6 eared macaque. I like that sort of character creativity because ultimately, it makes their past have way more drama then if hed just been some asshole from 2 chapters.
Great analysis of the book! It definitely took some getting used to because the style of storytelling is just not something that’s very common in modern fantasy, but once you get the hang of it it’s a very rewarding and honestly really deep story. Love seeing the different interpretations in 3d, 2d, or whatever as they really expand on the mythology and offer different creative lenses through which the stories can be enjoyed.
Thank you for such an insightful comment ❤️🔥
LMK just lacks the crass vulgarity of the OG's humour. Wukong's theatrics and monkey-like mannerisms adds to his charm in the JTTW novel. LMK feels like a flanderization of the character to be honest.
I think JTTW has super dark side with bureaucracies though, it annoyed me when I was a kid
@salamanderman3831 I think that comes from Wukong and Zhu Bajie.
In Lego Monkie Kid Wukong is more mature. Hes older and much less trixy. A lot of Sun Wukong’s bad behavior was a result of him being restless, cynical, board, and being without a greater purpose. He had no resolution and infinite time. LMK Wukong is in a very different stage in his life where he isn't strung up the same way he used too. I do wish Wukong could do more silly monkey stuff in his mannerisms. In episode one he eats a tick out of MK's hair. And more of that kind of stuff would be more fun. Wukong's adatude is that of a chill cool dad who used to party hard in collage. And I feel that's a very valid direction for a legacy sequel after the "old band" split up.
And more obviously Pigsy is the polar opposite of Zhu Bajie. Responsible, hard working respectful, not a complainer and conflic starter. Also he's not a insufferable sex pest with two jokes. Getting beaten up for his lack of manners and eating to much. It get REALLY exhausting.
I agree that the raunchy humor is gone. But I can't complain. The slapstick and visual humor was always my preference. Plus I really REALLY didn't like Zhu Bajie.
I know I'm not alone, because even Black Myth Wukong literally changed everything about Zhu Bajie too. (Not complaining, I prefer him not being a mega predator to the Spider demon sisters.)
2 weeks of youtube hiding this from me :')
NOOOO 😭 glad you found it
You souldn't have used the "going to the Underworld" example with Kratos, since he died and escaped at least twice...
I think Wukong and Kratos would become friends.
Kratos would die at first like against Thor but he'd escape the Land of the Dead and Wukong would be intrigued by that, I think.
Actually yeah you’re probably right, as both defy the corrupt gods of their respective mythologies. What a wild crossover that would be, though it’s already possible with their Fortnite skins!
I really enjoyed both BMW and LMK. Just one thing, Erlang did not best Wukong in the original JTTW story. Erlang could not beat Wukong without Laozi's help. They were equally powerful.
Great clarification, it really is only the Buddha that could subdue the monkey on his own. Such cool stories
Then entire reason I search for a video like this is a funny similarity they had
Ep 1 bad weather chapter 1 black wind mountain
Ep 2 duplication chapter is the chapter you unlock duplicates
Ep3 dragon of the west chapter 3 the new west
Ep4 spiders chapter 4 spider themed
That’s crazy how it lines up like that. Wild coincidence?
@@Danielewa.builds no clue I’ll see if the coincidences continue into journey to the west then we’ll definitely know
It’s not really up to interpretation, the story itself is based on real life clothing, practices, and myths. If you read the book, you’d see it gets pretty grim, at times
It’s definitely pretty grim, but often balanced with levity. I love the Monkey King English translation version because it balances those aspects pretty well.
@@Danielewa.builds Absolutely, the dialogue in particular has a special place in my heart lmaoooo also, Tripitaka falling off his horse out of shock about a hundred times pretty much invented recurring jokes fr
He’s the Same..Monke.
Question, have you guys ever watched the 1986 series or read the novels?
We’ve read the “Monkey King” English abridged version!
Umm..No?😰
Batman was rarely there before Wukong.
@@Lemuel928 huh?
Also Goku morigen and Inuyasha
My only question is where can I watch Monkie kid at now. They took it off most streaming!!!?
I heard they are streaming it on Peacock now??
Black myth is just better in every way. LMK doesn't even come close to the charm of the original JTTW's crass, absurdist humour.

Lego Monkie Kid clears
The sheer energy of Monkie Kid is unparalleled, what an awesome theme
I don't or ever think monkey prince will ever be a relevant conversation anymore and should be they make Batman go for the fucking kill in one page like huh? How do you butcher it That Hard? So yeah no more issue or volume for that shitshow
Yeah,it's really disappointing.I get that the whole thing started from the Batman & Robin comic where Damian ran from Bruce, but the fact that Marcus doesn't get to handle someone from his own pantheon is weird.Idk about you but I get weird illfeel feeling when Batman & Robin hugged while Marcus at the side is standing alone while his own dad rejects him & his grandpa is out to get him. That's rough.
And I'm never gonna stop questioning the fact that they made Nezha a villain with a generic demon design and a generic villain origin story.Dan Mora & whoever drew the last Lazarus Planet comic cooked, but it's disappointing that Nezha & Red Boy's design is so similar I forgot who is who sometimes. It's a shame the story goes like this when an actual chinese (Gene Luen Yang) is involved.Like...they could literally pick ANY demon from JTTW that people have never heard before cause there's tons of em instead of turning third lotus prince to a demon.
@@claudius3359 that guy(the Chinese guy) are either deranged before or after that comic series
And it's hilariously saddening that the only time we got batman and superman green lantern combo was Only because of Red Nezha the bad adaptation series .....
@@firdanharbima6997To be fair,I'm not sure how involved he is in the writing department since it's started in World's Finest series. But if DC could get him to write for them but not atleast consult him (like even if they insist on making him a villain, atleast make the story sound less like a 'mysterious mystic villain from the far east' or whatever stereotypical 70s chinese villain thing is going on).
But yeah,a shame since the whole thing is actually pretty epic.
I like black myth than lego
Thats fine! I like both for different reasons
I can respect that. I personally like the Lego show more because of the humor in it.
I feel like Lego Monkie Kid is highly overrated imo. First off, it's super childish. I get that it's aimed at kids, but why the heck do they have to butcher Sun Wukong's character to such an embarrassing degree? It feels like they took everything that makes Sun Wukong the absolute badass legend he is and watered him down to the point where he’s more of a comic relief character than anything. Wukong’s always been this super complex, clever trickster, but in this show? He’s kinda... well, dumb. It’s like they turned him into a goofy sidekick, and for me, that just doesn’t do him justice. Then there’s the fandom. I mean, everyone’s free to ship whoever they want, but some of the stuff I’ve seen is kinda weird. Like, the whole Wukong and Macaque shadowpeach thing? It’s a little much for me, especially when it gets... overly intense, let’s say. And don’t even get me started on the MK and Wukong stuff. It just doesn’t sit right with me. Maybe I’m missing something, but I just can't get behind it. Okay, sure, I'll give it one thing, the animation is kinda cool. But great animation means nothing when everything else is so awful. It’s like putting lipstick on a pig. It doesn’t fix the fact that Wukong's character is a steaming pile of garbage in this show. Now, let’s talk about the real king, Black Myth Wukong. This game is everything I wanted and more. They didn’t just stay true to the legend, they amped it up in a way that feels powerful and fresh. The graphics? Mind-blowing. It's like they took every detail and cranked it up to 11. The gameplay? Makes me feel like I’m actually in control of a living force of nature, not just some cartoon monkey flailing around. It’s gritty, powerful, and everything Lego Monkie Kid is NOT. And I guess that's just why I prefer Black Myth Wukong.
And that's valid! Personally I like LMK due to the silliness of the show. They took a lighthearted route from the novel itself. I also have a soft spot for Wukong and Mk duo because of their interactions. I don't know about the Sun Wukong part because I think they just made him careless? Just a monkey struggling to mentor because he's not the type to mentor at all and just gives Mk half hearted teachings that sucks like ass. The ship part I agree with, I don't like Shadowpeach because it doesn't make sense to me at all and that people most likely ship them because they're both monkeys and they used to be bros but I still find it weird. I haven't really seen the full thing of the game BUT I like the retelling of the story so far and Wukong here looks so cool 🔥
I definitely agree with you with the fandom part,it's extremely weird.I don't find any justification for that ship (or ANY ship in this fandom,it's pure madness cause many doesn't seem to get the concept of immortality & agelessness) cause it seems they just want to pair two monkeys together (what the guy above me said).Even with the recent crowd saying they like it for the angst/history of them often just makes up theories out of thin air so they can interpret them as romantic (like Macaque developing feelings for his old friend,Macaque having possesive feelings to Wukong,or the likes of such which never appeared in the show),sometimes to the detriment of understanding the actual lore of the show without reaching too hard.
And yeah,LMK is at best very imbalanced.I'm pretty sure it got more popular cause it's mostly a kid's show but slowly brings in heavier plot points (which I think is a problem, since it's hard to see which parts are meant as gags and which part is serious. So the expectation for this show can be a bit weird).
I think Black Myth Wukong's advantage is definitely because:
1.Made by chinese people themselves.
2.Made by passionate people who broke off from a larger company to make their own thing.Compare that to LMK that recently has a bad-looking season because LEGO pushed the studio to produce a new season.
LMK is fun,but it has that classic feeling of showmakers dragging the story to get the audience engaged.Big ups for BMW creators to make the game a complete story instead of expecting people to expect for DLCs or sequels.
The thing about Wukong Monkie Kid though,it's because it's more focused on MK so we don't really see what he's really up to.Which is actually one of my complaints about it,cause with each new seasons, they only focus at MK and loses episodes that focuses on other characters like in season 1.It's like solely revolving around him and his little world only even though the whole thing exists because of Wukong.
Though I don't hate LMK for being zany & comedic (just for the dragging out the plot) cause I do like to watch kids shows to chill, but I love stuff like Black Myth Wukong (y'know to balance things out) cause it feels like Elden Ring x Journey to the West with its character designs.
It's just my opinion, but I kinda find Wukong in the book a bit cartoonish.Sometimes it makes me take a double take cause this is the guy who has smashed creatures into bits with his staff. And I think that's how the humor of this book works to me: set the atmosphere serious enough that when something ridiculous happens,it really hits you.
Plus even BMW Wukong is still pretty sassy & trolling (defo different kinda humor tho),and he rarely even appeared in the game. The last battle was his corpse (even as a corpse he's still trolling! it does remind me of everytime Wukong trains MK.There's even a scene where Wukong kicks the staff in S5 just like in the game)
@@Roselynwashereand i like lmk because of the story and Fight and powers and outhers, witch are really incredible
Black myth wukong and monkie kid have better representation sun wukong.
