    We stayed at Meat Cove 14 years ago! We parked our Van facing the edge of the cliff at the camp there. It was whilst a hurricane went by off the coast there. Buffeting our van back and forth....back and forth! All night I thought our van would roll off the cliff! It was FANTASTIC! We had gone to that little fishing village near by. The men there were awesome. They gave us Cod cheeks to eat. Wonderful people

      That's a great story. I'm glad your van made it through the storm. The people in Bay Saint Lawrence are very nice and it has a little takeout stand with great lobster rolls.

    I live in meat cove/grew up there and not a super well known fact is if you head to the opposite side of the beach right below the campground on top of all the fallen rocks there's one in particular that you can find arrows, ones and zeros carved into it! It's very interesting and not many people know about it!

      That's very interesting. Thanks for the information. I am hoping to come back someday with my SCUBA gear and I will go and try to find this rock you are talking about. Maybe it's from the old fishing and hunting days.

      If you are going to Halifax I would suggest the Alexander Keith's brewery tour. It is the best tour around and well worth the visit.

    Meat Cove is the beginning of Cape Breton Island, not the end, stunning vistas

      Thanks. I actually had a lot of connection issues while flying so I didn't get as good of drone shots as I would have liked but at least it was something.

    Interesting video Mike! We were in Cape Breton Sept 2019. Considered going into Meat Cove but we were leery about driving the camper van through the dirt road and around steep grades. How did you find the drive in?

    • @rivervidsyt
      @rivervidsyt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The drive to Meat cove is not bad but it is a dirt road and had recently been graded which made it an easier drive. The road down to the beach is difficult and should only be attempted with an all wheel drive vehicle. I did drive down it with a Toyota Camry but it wasn't good for it.

    Interesting name, Meat Cove, is there a story behind it?? 🤔😊

      My understanding is that it was a location where people would land their boats and then go hunting in the interior. After the hunt was over they would bring the animals back to the beach and dress them there. I had assumed it had something to do with sealing or whaling but I can't find any reference to that activity there. Here is a quoteto from a "The chronicle herald" news story "It was [named] by Europeans back probably in the 1700s. They would come in here and do a slaughter (of moose, deer and bear). They were more interested in the hides and antlers as opposed to the meat."

      The water temp along the coast of Nova Scotia is pretty warm in the summer for swimming, except for on the Bay of Fundy side. You would freeze to death trying to swim like that in the bay.
