Magical Symbols - History of Sigils Angelic Alphabets and Symbols of Power

  • This video traces the origin and development of magical symbols from late-classical Egypt through their development into Western European Magic. These characters likely began as debased hieroglyphics and would eventually develop into unique symbols of power, the seals and sigils in angelic and demonic mage, and form the basis for angelic script / alphabets. This video is a part of a series on magical and occult symbolism so make to subscribe if that interests you!

The most current scholarship on Solomonic sigils and characters backs this history. We keep discovering that strings of symbols - for example those found on the Knives and Wands - are actually corrupted letters, very often some combination of YHVH, Elohim, and Zabaoth.

had long been under the impression that these spirits were just some obscure part of Western Magical practice. I dont recall who it was, perhaps Jake Stratton-Kent, that found that the sigils or seals for the Olympic spirits were actually in use in Ancient Greece and can be seen on some of the statuary there today. I
Sometimes the message on the phone is uncorrupted, but we forget who exactly is on the other line.

First, I LOVE your channel! Great content--and I love your dry wit.
Second, every time I see magical writing with ringlet terminals, I laugh because that's exactly how the sorority girls at my college would write on poster board signs with magic markers. There was even a satirical article in the college newspaper that described a terrible affliction known as Scripto-Sororia, that compelled its victims to write in that manner. So every time I see those symbols, I remember ditzy sorority girls trying to recruit members during pledge week.
(Now I have to wonder if they weren't secretly doing magic ... )

  • @LadyCoyKoi

I use sigils on my candle magick a lot. They truly make a huge difference at the collective force of the ritual. Vodun and Lukumi (aka Santeria) uses their own sigils as well. They open paths and connections to the spirits to send the SOS message. Rituals and sigils are important to the spirit world. They make sure the intentions are clear. This is also to avoid anything that can get you into trouble. Symbols are important to other realms outside of our own. You also don't want to open portals that should not be opened or bring in spirits that don't belong. This video is fantastic and much needed, especially those of us who practice religions that use sigils as part of our practices. Knowledge is a must!!! It isn't just do it... one must know first to avoid complications. Your videos help me understand my Lukumi, Santeria, religion better. Thank you.

The way the terminator ends were used reminds me of how my culture, Circassian, has symbols we used called Damighas which helped distinguish things we owned or families we belonged to. My Damigha once had a T shaped top when we worshipped Tha, it became a cross when my ancestors became Christian and then a O circle when they became Muslim!

@Dingo Fury No, the Avars were neighbors and allies of my people in the fight against the Russian empire in the Caucasian War that lasted 101 years. They lost so many lives like my own people who refused to give in to the Russians who committed genocide and exiled many of both of our people. They live just south of my people in Dagestan.
In my culture, our mythology surrounds the Narts who are great heroes like that of Sosruquo who stole fire from the giant. We also have the wise and leader of the Narts, the great mother Satanay and not to mention the myth of the golden apple tree.

My sense is that many religious texts - The Bible, Qu'ran, Gathas - function this way. Certainly in the Jewish tradition the Zohar has this function. For instance, I have an entire copy of the Zohar on microfilm in a special box such that it functions wholly as an amulet.

If you're referring to the vegvisir: despite how often it's used as a norse rune in pop culture, we have no evidence of it from that time, it only appears in a compilation of Icelandic magical texts from the 19th century. So it's more likely that the vegvisir derives from the magic symbols talked about in the video, transferred to Iceland at some point, rather than the other way around.

Thinking how a lot of Hebrew letters have "a little yod" in similar positions to the ringlets - you know like shin has a "little yod" at the top of each upright.... I wonder if this could possibly be the origin of the ringlets.

Terminators are just where the lines that compose the letters/shapes come to an end. For instance the capital T has three terminators. You can see much finer detail in the text of the Greek magical Papyrus, the letters in Cornleius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy and in the the Jewish text of Magic the Sefer Raziel, to name a few. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

"The Ninth Degree--the Sanctuary of the Gnosis--is synthetic. The prime duty of its members is to study and practise the theurgy and thaumaturgy of the grade; but in addition they must be prepared to act as direct representatives of the Supreme and Most Holy King, radiating his light upon the whole world. Yet, from the nature of their initiation, they must veil their glory in a cloud of darkness. They move unseen and unrecognized among the youngest of us, subtly and loftily leading us into the holy ineffable mysteries of the True Light."
