2020 Toyota Tacoma Review! SR vs SR5 vs TRD Sport vs TRD Off-Road

- In this video, we get to see the brand new 2020 Toyota Tacomas and the new features that Toyota has added.
We compare the popular models from the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road. New features range from the optional new headlights to the 360 camera.
The SR models are known to be used by companies to need a basic work truck. The 2020 SR models are basic yet still having nice technology features like the infotainment and the TSS.
The SR5 is a super popular model that can feature almost all of the packages in the higher trims at an affordable price. It is limited from things like leather seats and the locking rear diff but it is still a great option for ones who don't need or want those features.
The TRD Sport Tacoma is super popular as well for drivers who daily drive their trucks to and from work. It is the only trim that is equipped with 17" wheels and color matched exterior trimming.
The TRD Off-Road is our personal favorite because it has the rear locking diff, terrain select, and crawl control. For the same MSRP price as the TRD Sport, it is without thought that the TRD Off-Road is the way to go if you plan on doing any off-road driving at all. Even if the thought of taking it off-road crosses your mind then the TRD Off-Road is the way to go.
We did not feature the TRD Pro in this video because it is completely out of the running with these trim levels. We will, however, do a separate video on the TRD Pro trim.

I hate when reviews are only the top of the line option. Thank you sir for showing us different packages/options. 👏🏾
Same.
I agree, but damn, it was not eventful watching the SR model, lol :-/ kinda... Work Truck boring.
Exactly
The LED headlights and fog lights should’ve been standard for 2020
I just bought the sr5 . I have no problem not having LED. You obviously have never replaced an LED headlights very very expensive and they all.almist always never cover it in Warenty
I just bought LED bulbs for my truck. 100 bucks total. Install in 5 minutes. Option for that on a new truck would include much more I think. I’ll just buy my own bulbs.
If the SR came available with the double cab/6 ft bed combonation, I'd get a 4x4 SR in a heartbeat and upgrade it slowly over time. Everything you need and no fluff.
Bought a SR5 4x4 v6. Its suits me well. Moat off road I'll do is ranch roads and snow. No need to spend the extra 10k on a off road for my needs. All great trucks
thanks to all of you guys for making my life a little easier that i dont need to drive to the dealers, I now know what to buy for my next Tacoma,
Transmission options? Save the manual!
I have the off road premium in quicksand. Got a knock off heritage grille, emblem blackouts, bed cover and predator steps. Never loved an inanimate object more.
You buy any of that stuff with the truck or you added it on after?
Inanimate object 😁
My SR came with good flares and other upgrades. Once I get new lights and a new grille it’ll be awesome.
Really liked this video. Having the trucks side by side comparing features is very helpful !!
You did a great job !! Thank you for showing all trim models in one video
I bought a 2018 SR 4x4 and honestly, I'm super happy with it! If you're on a budget don't hesitate to look at the SR
Did you add anything to it?
@@bradleydavis2410 not yet, it's been good stock, but eventually I want to add better off road shocks and armor
I agree. Got a 20 SR Access Cab 4x4. Only things I really miss is the tow hitch and wiring in the back, power drivers seat and lack of wiring for truck bed lighting.
@@Anon1mous My SR came with Tow package and wiring. Yet another win for the SR
Just got a 2018 SR last week. Its my first venture into Tacoma even though I've wanted one for years. I was lucky to find one with black rims, Hankook tires, running boards, tinted windows for my price range. It had 30k miles. But the previous owner put some money into it.
Thank you for covering Tacos. I own a Sport access cab, but was interested in the entire video. The knowledge that the entire line up is ultra upgradable (mod crazy) makes Tacoma the truck to have.
Great comparison review including prizing for each trim model... Thanks!
Those new headlights and taillights making my 2017 Sport miiiiiiight jelly
Nice video explaining the features of each 2020 tacoma trim level. Appreciate all the detailed info
Sport: aesthetic
Off Road: features
Edgar S hard to explain that to your average joe who thinks sport means faster lol
@@christ2054 haha you're absolutely right, end of the day though, any taco is a good choice!
Chris Taco I’ve driven both back to back. If you were “racing” the sport will smoke the OR. The sport suspension handles like a dream on highway and regular roads.
micah payandeh what do you mean by racing? Like on a track? The OR is much softer on the road. And plus my supercharged 04’ smokes both of them anyways lol
Chris Taco I’m talking about faster in general ex. Through turns, windy roads etc. the sport handles 10X better. The OR feels good over pot holes, but oafy and a sponge feeling with turns and general handling
Amazing comprehensive summary of trims
Trd OR 2005 here.. got power supply in the back 👌
And the extra cubby as well on the driver side.
It still run great for 15 years old truck. Very reliable those Tacoma
Got an SR model, super happy with it and can build it for me!
You did an EXCELLENT job reviewing, I was afraid it would be hard to follow the differences since you had many models to review at one time.
Excellent information. Just what I was looking for.
Great job on explaining trim differences. I am trying to decide on which trim I want and gives me the most for my buck. I’m upgrading my 2019 SR5 4cyl double cab for a 2020 V6 Acces cab. I’ve been building my own Taco on the Toyota website to figure out the trims and pricing.
Thanks
is 4cyl double cab is that bad? If I am just carrying people 4 cylinder is ok right? I heard 4 cylinder is more reliable than the v6.
Buy the cheapest manual v6 4x4 available and spend some money on a 3in lift, 34in tires, 4.88 gears (5.29 on A/T), and twin lockers.
You mean but that stuff aftermarket?
Lorenzo i to agree build your own toy!!!
I just bought the SR. Price was right and left lots of options to upgrade the way I want it. I’m not worried about leather seats or the extra inch on the radio.
I bought my 2017 OR 4x4 non tech package for 32,200$. Crazy how much they’ve gone up.
Haven’t really gone up that much. I got my 2020 OR 4x4 non-tech for 34,200.
Got my 2019 trd off road with the tech package new for 32k out the door.
@@adventureanglingpnw1821 lies
@@brownhome1928 got my or with tech and led package for 36.8. Msrp was 39500. Dealer would not budge.
The wheels on the sr5 are pretty awesome too
I think it’s hilarious that on the limited you get an sr/sr5 grille that’s just painted to match. Thanks Toyota. 😊
Didn't read the final MSRP AFTER the upgraded options. They add a fair amount. I'm betting the premiums were around $40k.
Dude the f.... Best review than I ever seen 💪💪🤝🤝👏👏👏
It's kind of crazy to think that I watch this video when I was thinking about which trim level to get for my Tacoma. Also didn't realize that it was Taco twans when I first watched it. So I guess I've been a fan ever since I started to consider Tacoma's 🤟
Great job probably best review of pretty much anything I’ve ever seen
So many annoying people complaining in the comments. Good video!
Kenny Estupinan it's ok we've kind of gotten used to people complaining but it's nice to see the ones who appreciate the videos like yourself 🤙
Great video 👍. Charging 32k for that SR is ridiculous.
And if you get that SR5 with a tech package.... you are looking at well over over $32K... probably close to $34K...
@@betterdeadthanred839 They’re around $40k now!!!
I liked your information. I learned a lot. Some kind of lighting on the interior would make it so we can see the product.
Great review. Thanks . On a side note-19:08. The msrp does not include the premium and tech packages. They add another $5k to the price. For a second I thought I way overpaid for my 2021 TRD sport 4x4 premium. I had to double check my window sticker. I was a little stressed out for a couple minutes there. Now I can go to sleep
Can you all do a video on the accessories that can be added based off the pre-wiring Tacoma has done. I have a Tacoma and there are a ton of quick connects that have nothing connecting to them that I don't know what they are for. I don't see a lot of videos about this.
i bought my 2015 trd sport long bed for 32.500 back in 2015 now new models 5k higher
Exactly the vid I was looking for thank you!
you are very welcome!
Awesome Video! Thanks for the in depth look.
Are there really no heated seats in the SR5 or regular Sport model? Prices are outrageous!!.Gona be a lot sitting on lots if this economy goes for a dump.
You got your wish........ Covid-19 just put the economy for a DUMP. Maybe you'll get your price now! :)
This is the video I needed, thanks
I think if your buying a tacoma with a plan to build it just for overland and the occasional 4x4 off road, just get a SR5. The couple extra thousand just for crawl control, suspension, and minor interior feature just can't be justified in my opinion.
I overland alot and have only ever used my crawl control twice, not even because I needed too, but just wanted too...lol...
Very true! Great advice. I would only Upgrade to OR for the rear locker, not crawl. Could always add locker later on SR/SR5 4x4 but at probably around $2,000-2,500 after labor, which is pretty pricey unless you can do it yourself. I guess, depending on the price you get out the door, could still end up being a savings. I like knowing if I need it I got it, but could always just use 4x4 base model and see if you truly need it and go from there. If you know you’re gonna be rock crawling more, most likely it will majorly come in handy.
IMO, SR5 in 4x4 makes about as much sense as a TRD OR in 4x2 - not much. For just $2K over the SR5, in the TRD OR you get the AC inverter and in-bed power outlet, push-button start, remote start, Qi wireless phone charging, inclinometer and altimeter, machined wheels, wider tires, off road suspension with Bilstein shocks, sturdier rear differential with locker, multi-terrain select, and crawl control. The price is a bargain for all of that equipment, and you’ll get most or all of it back in resale value. Even if you never use the last two, for even light off-roading the other features are good to have. The Bilstein-tuned off road suspension alone is worth at least a Grand. The inverter is handy for camping trips. Push button starting may seem like a silly advantage, but it is one of those things that once you have, you wonder how you got along without it, and remote starting is similarly handy. The SR5 is the sweet spot for a 2WD Tacoma, but the TRD Off Road is the sweet spot for 4WD.
@@youcanrunnaked agreed
Thank you for all the information on all the models!!!
Great video...…but MSRP price is misleading! The total price (out the door) price would've been better! Again thanks!
There is no way for us to get out the door price. Everyone can get a different deal and everyone has a different tax rate based on their address.
Thank you, informative and helpful!
So we can switch or hood with hood scoop for the trd 4wd or install the hood scoop
Why are you reading the msrp base price on top without the added options? The true price of the cars are at the bottom of the page WITH the added said options. Those trucks are way more with the added option bro.
You’re right, thoseTRD 4x4’s are $43/$44k trucks. Price is at the bottom right of the Monrony label, not the top.
... uhhh, actually you should be able to get most any vehicle in the US for less than the MSRP, you can't be serious, you're not paying the dealer mark up add ons??? i thought everyone knew better than that.
@Andrew King Jr.
He’s not talking about dealer add-ons. He mentioned the base prices on the trucks without any options at all. There were several factory options on these trucks which made the trucks several thousand more. In other words, he read us the wrong price.
Can you pretty much add the same accessories between all models?
Thank you for the information. Now I know which trim level to choose. ( sr5 )
From what I gather only the TRD models have the AC outlet in the bed?
Good review of features and differences.... Not a hard upsell of features.
SR 4cyl 4wd 5spd had to let mine go it was alemon rebuilt motor at 40k piston rings installed wrong from factory rear differential repairs 3 times and new rear Axel. Still has a cold start Pop.
You gave us the price’s before options were added!!! You did not look down at the bottom of the corner of the total price of the vehicle on the window sticker, so go back and look at your video!😚
Darren Patton that’s what I thought. My bought the trd sport 2020 without tech package, cloth seat no moonroof, no JBL and OTD WAS $38,000
Saw that too. He knows better. lol
@@khoatruong860 Yup. My 2020 offroad was 36k base but with added options went over 40k. lol
You’re right, thoseTRD 4x4’s are $43/$44k trucks. Price is at the bottom right of the
label, not the top.
eric1649eric Thanks Bud!
You guys rock - I just hit ‘Subscribe’ to your channel. I got word last week that my 2020 OR Access w/TRD Premium Package in Cement has been allocated to be built!
Just curious, when you order a new truck do they come down off msrp, or are you forced to pay full price?
Can I have your suggestion? Can I just buy SR just change mid or long travel, coil-overs, shocks, rims & tires? Instead of the TRDs?
Excellent review thank you!
Why did they get rid of the left bed storage compartment on the 2020 SR? I’m glad now that I have a 2018.
Not sure to be honest
Love my 2020 TRD OR prem. silver! Great upgrade from my 08 TRD. Big difference!
What about the x series the xs predator model? Or is Toyota not doing that one this year?
What is the cargo bed size of the SR5?.. Does the SR5 comes with the push button start?..
To sum it up if your going to upgrade your Tacoma anyway get the sr or sr5
First? - I need that Tundra content lol. Those 37s looked meaty.
How come the website only shows the chrome rear bumper for the sr5? Did they change that for 2022?
Yeah, This video came out before the 22 models so it might be a new change.
where is this pricing? i was quoted for trd off road premium for 42K
You might as well get a trd pro at that point most new ones go for about 42-50k. Got my 2019 trd off road new for like 32k out the door
@@adventureanglingpnw1821 how much under msrp did you pay? I'm looking to get a taco as well. Either a Sport or Offroad. I don't plan on doing any off roading since there are no trails by me, so most likely go for the sport to be more comfortable for commuting. But always wondered how much others paid when compared to msrp.
Trd grill looking nice though! Love them
Lights as well. Looks super nice!
Does the trd sport package for 2020 come with a limited slip in the rear like they did for the second gen trd sport models, if not, second gen trd sport models are still better in my opinion, and at least they put the Bilstein back on the trd sport because for while they did not have them in there for the third gens it was only on the trd off road
each model good review though planning to get one soon. Thanks for the review
Hate that my 2020 OR came with the chrome bumper. Got the color match one getting delivered soon 👌🏼
What is the suspension difference in the 2020 SR and SR5?
Great job Man
Hey twonz, how do I get aftermarket jump seats for my sr access cab, or get one commissioned from Toyota? I bought mine slightly used with only 2k in mileage. Unfortunately wasn’t “ordered” by first owner in the package. Thanks in advance
Good vid, but you didn’t tell us the actual sticker price of the trucks. You stated the base Msrp, which doesn’t include the options you mentioned. You read us the wrong number off the sticker. Each of those trucks is much more expensive, and your failure to read the right number is misleading.
I need your help on my sink and granite. Sink. There is something that is laying large.
you guys gonna review the ab6 headlights? I wanna buy a set but i wanna know if its worth it.
Do passengers have power seats ?
You read the msrp before options
Brand new car prices were not different from where you live in the states!!!
Nice vid🤙
pretty well explained
They deleted the driver side bed cubby in 18 or 19.
All SR5 come in Automatic; That's as far as I got before I crossed SR5s off the list.
I love watching you guys. Don’t stop making vids.
I just bought a white 2020 SR, 4x4, V6 and 4 doors. I put a 3” spacer lift, 285/70r17 falken MTs, trd pro wheels and I love it
The spacer will start wearing out suspension parts bro get a lift kit
Any problems with the tss?
@@rx8dude907 I don't think its necessary. Dealerships install these and sell them nonstop. that is a made up assumption unless you have actually seen one damaged which i doubt you have.
Spacer lifts are looked down on in the Jeep community too mostly for the reason that it wears out parts and makes the ride rougher than a real lift kit would. The other thing is a lot of people put them on after the vehicle is a few years old and stuff is getting worn already then it wears it out faster yet. You may like your spacer lift now wait and see you will replace it all with a real suspension lift. I love the Old Man Emu lift I installed on my Jeep 7 years ago it was well worth the money over spacers.
Ryan Liggatt I have a 6” lift on my 2019 Tacoma trd 4x4 and I have a pro grill and no problems w tss. Everything works the same as before lift.
Does the SR5 have the wireless charger?
No
What if I told you that you can get a 2020 off road premium with led fog lights and headlights with a double cab; 5 foot bed.
You forgot to mention that on the sport you have the cool hood but you lose it on the off road version.
i wish you showed the pro also
Is the hood scoop functional or just aesthetic?
@@ethanfisher3677 it's only asthenic. I've seen one person turn it into a ram air snorkle from hood to box and I've seen a few people modify it to vent hot air
If I wanted black fender flares on the SR5, can I get that option instead of color matched?
Not sure if that's an option
Taco Twonz - Man, I thought for sure you would know. lol But ok, thanks. I guess I’ll just have to call the dealer. But those flares must come off if they ever get damaged or need replacement in any way.
Not available for SR,SR5 or TRD Sport!
So, my Sr5 is an Sr according to your info.
Good video thanks!
TRD PRO Auto start?
Why they have TSS and then TSS Off road (truck sport). So confusing
I agree, not sure why they did that
How long ago is this video? looking for off-road premium and prizes are 46k. 10k difference from this video.
Very long ago. Now there is crazy price markups unfortunately
@@Runnin4Tacos 46k is the original prize. With mark up, it’s over 50k. 🤯
Just what I was looking for. Can’t decide between sport or off-road.
Up is Down I’m in the same situation. Just I need the tech package for BSM. I’ve got quotes for $31k otd for the off road but I’d still rather have the dport
uPredict Toyota of Tampa bay and pinellas park.
uPredict yeah. Pinellas park seems better, you have to use true car though.
uPredict you weren’t the one that bought it, right?
Noah Boock wow $30k otd? What state are you in? In CA I’d be lucky to get it less than $38k
Next time give us a price with all the options added! There gonna be a lot more
That is going to be different depending on where you live. Also you obviously have the ability to go on the internet, go to www.toyota.com
Too bad Mountain States didn’t have the white access cab one on the lot when I was looking last month, they had no access cabs at all. Got it somewhere else... Nice people there, too bad.
So the Premium Off Road doesn't have LED lights and the regular Off Road does?? That's ridiculous!! How can they cal it "premium" and it doesn't have LEDs?! 🤦🏻♂️
The headlights are an option for any TRD models so either premium or not
Taco Twonz I know but I feel like it should be standard if you're buying the "Premium" package.
You can cancel out the wind noise with Audacity
I'd sell my '17 just to get a model with a power seat
Wish the SR came with the long bed and crew cab.
Mine has crew cab
Got a 2019 blue Voodoo TRD pro love it!
The sr doesn't have intermittent wiper function either
Do only problem is that a truck at the price point he shows are just not possible to find in north east. Best I can find 43,500
That's pretty high, we paid 45k for a Pro and 32k for a used Off Road
