Here's Why This Lifted 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Is THE 4x4 Truck To Buy!

  • The 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is a great off-road truck - there's no doubt about it. BUT, is it really the best Tacoma to buy? In this video, Tommy argues the case for the Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Not only can you save a bit of a cash from the full-on TRD Pro, but you can now get a 2-inch lift kit as an option from the manufacturer. That might just make it the most solid option if you're shopping for a new Tacoma right now.

    The big difference between TRD offroad/pro and other Tacoma trims (including TRD sport) is the differentials.
    Rear diff in offroad/pro is bigger (larger ring size), it also comes with the rear locker. In addition, the final gear ratio is lower in these models compared to other trims.
    This is the most important/expensive difference in my opinion, not the crawl control.

    • @shitloveaduck
      @shitloveaduck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How does it get a fog light delete? It’s not a factory option, it’s an accessory. They show the $1450 is the parts price, not installed. You can select any Tacoma on the lot and add this lift kit. It’s a bolt on accessory. If you buy a Tacoma with fog lights, they are not removed when this suspension kit is installed. You can have the lift and the fog lights.
      If I had a model example TRD Off-Road with the fog lights, but at 3,000 km decided I want this lift kit and decide further to have the dealership install the kit, are you saying the fog lights will be removed/deleted??

    • @MegaBob12311
      @MegaBob12311 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Allegedly, because the fog lights are not aimed properly for the lift the dealership is supposed to remove them and replace them with the blanks when the lift is installed and from what we’ve been told the dealerships are the only way to get the trd lift.

    • @gs98999
      @gs98999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@shitloveaduck they are legally required to take the fog lights out when they put the kit in. If you ask nicely I am sure your dealer would leave them in. But even if they don’t, just put them back in yourself?

      @@MegaBob12311 - they better damn well give me all the parts of the fog lamps I paid for in the first place. I will put them right back in when I get home. How ridiculous. It’s 2021 why doesn’t every vehicle come with LED headlights? Although I found a downside to LEDs this past winter. I was driving in a snowstorm and the headlights don’t get warm enough to melt the snow. It was coming down pretty hard and I had to keep pulling over every 20 minutes or so to clean them out. I don’t think you would have that problem on a traditional headlight like a Tacoma, it’s not going to collect the snow like a jeeps headlights would.

    The headrest folding forward is so that you can have the headrests down while driving with rear seat unoccupied. To fold the seat back down, remove the headrests and put them into holes on the back of the seat back (or toss them in the garage if you’re keeping them down).
    Same skid plate at the TRD Pro. Same tires and size as the Pro.

      The 4R is better than the Taco. It has a usable rear seat and more storage despite a smaller footprint. The Taco Access Cab is the way to go with the larger bed. The rear seats in all Taco cabs are useless. You have to get a Tundra if you plan to use the back seat and want exterior storage.

    I like this video. Gives a good perspective on the TRD lift kit. I just wish you would've mentioned why the TRD kit is superior to other lifts. The main part of the lift kit is that it works with Toyota's TSS suite. A big part of the dealer installation is calibrating the sensors and realigning the truck. In addition to the front grille, you also get the fog lamp delete.

(Did it in capital so it gets the point across) that loop he touched is a tie down point for transportation. Now off to the passenger side you see the j-hook that is your recovery point. That J-hook comes standard on the OR and Pro models, it doesn’t come on any other model. Could probably purchase it from Toyota or ARB make a sweet recovery point that you can also buy. That that tie down loop comes on every model, and again, that doesn’t mean you have a recovery point.

    If you’re serious about 4x4, have decent mechanical knowledge (or willingness to learn), and don’t care about unnecessary bells and whistles (like seat heaters), getting the SR and installing a lift, new wheels + tires, a rear locking diff, and some armor will leave you with a much more capable truck for thousands less than the TRD OR is currently going for. I installed a steel front bumper with a winch and light bar on top of the parts mentioned above and still came out in the positive (relative to the TRD OR price).
    When you buy TRD, you’re buying the sticker, not the components.

    The lift does not allow bigger tires. It's just a suspension lift, not a long travel. Fully locked, the tire will enter the wheel well just as much as without the lift.
    The benefit of the lift (which I have and like) is greater approach and departure angles and it looks cool AF. Also, the Bilsteins and grill are a great upgrade on an SR/SR5.
    An upgrade that *does* allow for larger tires is the TRD Pro wheels. The wheel offset difference enables adding 33in tires with just a little heat gun molding around the fender to prevent rubbing.

For $189 you can get the 57 FIPK cold air intake from K&N which uses the stock air box and eliminates the resonator box from the stock intake making a smoother path from the air box to the throttle body. If I had to get a Tacoma, it would be this one with a manual.
    But the best 4x4 dollar for dollar is the ZR2. Less expensive, off road tires, front and rear lockers (rear locks in 2wd), fully(mostly) defeatable stability control, better brakes, better shocks, more power, more torque, etc. People preach about Toyota resale and reliability, but resale value on the ZR2 is high and, so far so good on reliability with almost 60K. Zero issues locking into 4lo or lockers when needed

  • @russellwood8750
    @russellwood8750 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting take on things I have a 2020 TRD pro Army green and the difference between the two trucks is a lot more than just bling better suspension rigid fog lights, nicer headlamps better looking wheels nicer and more durable interior upgraded air filters and desert intake under the hood dual ARB air compressor and so much more. Also in your video when you fold down the backseats to make a storage space you don’t try and force the head rests down they detach and fastened into the holes on the seat you flip-up. Also cannot recovery points under the vehicle the manufacturer Tiedown points. He’s tied down points are to tie down the vehicle or when it’s in shipping if you tried to use them as a recovery point there is a real possibility that they will sheer off the vehicle and you quite possibly could end up hurting somebody. So if you’re looking to get yourself pulled out of the situation I would probably put a recovery point in the rear hitch all get yourself a fully engineered properly rated from the recovery point that’s fastened to your frame. In your video you also mention the small rim size of the wheels, well that’s kind of crucial for off roading most off road use 16 to 17 inch wheels so they can have more sidewall for airing down . My biggest criticism to Toyota about their trucks is they don’t offer a long distance midship fuel tank living in North America it would be a very nice option to have. It would keep the weight and the centre of gravity Low, you wouldn’t have to mouth extra fuel cans on the roof or on the back of the vehicle somewhere. There are many Australian companies who make some really nice ones however because they don’t sell the the Comac in Australia they don’t have them available for the Tacoma otherwise I would ship one over. Now the off-road truck will save you some money for sure but if you wanna turn it into an overland vehicle or a really capable off-road truck you’ll be spending that money. In my experience none of the trucks offered by any of the manufacturers come fully ready where you’ll be totally happy and not have to spend additional money believe me you will be spending additional money.

    It says "D4S" on the engine cover. If anybody is wondering thats the name for the self cleaning system it has. It cleans carbon buildup off the injectors during hot idle and has a 10 second cleaning cycle and a 10 minute cleaning cycle. Ive never ever heard it talked about before. It sounds audibly different in that clean cycle, would be awesome if you guys had a way to show us that.

      It’s not designed as a self cleaning engine. Toyota uses a blended approach to using port and direct fuel injection to give the best possible performance, emissions and economy. The ecm makes this decision based on throttle input and engine temperature. It will use one or the other or both based on the needs at the time.

Of course the Zr2 is better off road but the reliability of the Tacoma is more important to me. Only thing about the interior of my truck that drives me nuts is the steering wheel does not tilt low enough or telescope out far enough for me to be comfortable as I'd like to be going down the highway.

    I drove a 2020 TRD Offroad as a rental recently, brand new, 4 miles on the clock. I was so happy to be able to drive it after my 2000 4runner. Well, huge disappointment. The 3.5 is dangerously gutless, zero torque under 3k rpm. On top of that the 6 speed auto has the worst programming I've ever experienced. Continuous 4-5-6, 4-5-6 shift hunting on a slight incline with the cruise control set to 70. Seats were quite uncomfortable. Got 17-18 mpg on the highway, that's ok I guess. On the positive side, it was very good on the Arizona trails, crawl control and rear locker are great. Maybe I'd buy a manual, but the 3.5 with the 6 speed auto kills this for me.

    Off road means slower speeds with fewer miles per gallon and further from gas stations. Despite that the Tundra with its 15 mpg off road fuel economy is only available with a 21 gallon fuel tank. It is wise to use one third of the tank to go off the beaten track and leave one third for the return trip and have one third in reserve. With the Toyota Tacoma that would be a useful range of only 90 miles. So unless one likes to have 5-gallone jerry cans mounted to the truck then the Ram Rebel with its option for a 33-gallon gas tank is a much better choice. If you are set on a Toyota pickup then best to buy the Tundra with its 38-gallon gas tank.

    Great review Tommy!
    The problem with that lift is that, unless you get extremely offset rims, you're still not gonna be able to go with bigger tires unless you chop the body mounts. And trust me, once you do that and add the bigger tires it will drive the lane departure and collision avoidance system crazy! I signed a waver and had all that crap disconnected on my 2019 TRD offroad.
    Another thing I've found is that the Bilsteins are to soft. You come off a ledge a bit to hard, the suspension compresses and you bottom out. My recommendation.... Ironman lift kit and a body mount chop. Throw away the front sway bar. Zero offset 16 x 9 light aluminum wheels and a good set of 33s. You'll do good without having to re-gear.

    The part I wanted to see the most is the back seat fold-down option. We need a do-over on that. The headrest holes are scene on the back of the seat. The headrest must go there. When the platform is properly utilized it should be flat. I'm thinking of a Tacoma and that fold flat seat would be perfect for my dog. I wish TFL would consider covering this in their videos it would be helpful to know how dog-friendly the cars and trucks are when doing research. I know one of you must have a dog. How many views have a dog and would like to see this covered? I have a sixty-pound dog and she goes everywhere with me. I need a truck that he would be comfortable in.
