The Anatomy of South Park's Darkest Episode

  • The Office is one of the most controversial shows ever to run this long or be this celebrated, and I think that's because it's hilarious and its commentary pokes fun at pretty much everybody equally.
If you exist, The Office has made fun of you, but in a way that'll make you laugh along. Now on its twenty fifth season, The Office is one of my favorite animated adult shows although it's definitely not for everyone, case in point the episode I want to talk about.
This is an analysis of South Parks darkest episode, Scott Tenorman Must Die.

@Brandon Raney Well into its 19th season, “South Park” has obtained the reputation of being a satirical, rather crass cartoon series that often tests the boundaries of irreverence. The style has undoubtedly brought the television series massive success and thus a review of the show once again proclaiming its excellence seems rather ridiculous. Nevertheless, the reputation among many regarding the sheer vulgarity of “South Park”is what makes this so necessary. “South Park” is not merely vulgar. The show is irreverent yes, but vulgarity is often synonymous with stupidity and as “South Park”has proven to many of its fans over the years, and particularly to me since the dawn of its nineteenth season, “South Park” is far more than just funny, it’s remarkably intelligent.
In this season, “South Park”has refocused its satire on a new group in particular: the politically correct. With a new principal that essentially embodies a college student in a fraternity, “South Park” has managed to poke fun at the overly sensitive society that perhaps creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have had to deal with far too often over the course of its previous 18 seasons.
This senseless need to deal with what is politically correct has thus been embodied throughout several, if not every episode, this season. For example, in the season premiere “Stunning and Brave”, Kyle is shamed for believing that Caitlyn Jenner is not as heroic as the politically correct proclaim. It then becomes rather evident that aside from just Kyle, others agree with Kyle’s stance, who claims that he should not be fascinated by Caitlyn Jenner merely because she is now a woman if he wasn’t fond of Bruce Jenner prior to the transition. The others are afraid to speak up regarding their argument, as they fear the taunting and overly heated arguments of the politically correct. In the end, Kyle, having been harassed as a backwards thinking bigot, must succumb to the majority and take the stance of the politically correct.
Whether you believe Caitlyn Jenner is a hero or not is besides the point. The point is that Stone and Parker managed to demonstrate how being PC can often drive one to be fearful of their own arguments against the majority, against what they believe is simply not common sense.
This is not to say that political correctness is the worst threat to society, but “South Park’s” ability to blatantly demonstrate its flaws through comedy proves that Parker and Stone’s intentions are not merely to offend, but rather to enlighten.

@@v6ntiaa My confusion is based around older seasons that reference situations and celebrities that i'm not familiar with, because its as old I am. It's a very fun way to learn about recent history in america because I have to google a lot of things each episode. I've always been aware of South Park as a giant serialized cartoon, I was never interestedin it because it's kinda ugly and the most well known reference I saw were gross and weird so I never saw a reason to be interested .I never understood that it was about social cultural commentary until very recently. It's amazing how a show can be so quick to reference recent cultural events but,I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be paying attention to something that is referencing something that happened at the time of the episode or if it's supposed to be annoying or gross because that's the point so I pay attention to the wrong things Because i'm Looking for pop culture references and trying to remember what was happening at the time of the episode airing. The trapper keeper is cool and weird but I wish I knew what it was about. I watch the episodes randomly so a lot of jokes that are based in the serialization of the show are lost on me. Jackovasuras was completely confusing and annoying and originally turned me off to the show, I'm still not sure what is completely about. Also the characters and plot devices are just really complicated And well done it's very cool for somebody to explain what is happening right in front of me. Because I don't realize what's going on and why I like The characters and why i'm interested in the story.

For Cartman to have anticipated every other characters' actions is a great way into showing that he had absolutely given up on allowing others the benefit of the doubt. His friends, who hang out with him everyday, actually hate him and want him to fail. Celebrities like Radio Head, which are often looked up to by millions, will jump at the chance to gang up on a crying child. Adults in his community, who he's told are safe, shot and killed two innocent people over a misunderstanding. Scott himself, the supposed genius always one step ahead, will manipulate others around him to get what he wants.
This was the episode that drove Cartman to never trust anyone; and he is proven right that he shouldn't when he ends up victorious. Everyone let him down until he utilized them correctly

Regarding this episode and how characters get humiliated on a regular basis it was genius. We all see this happen in other shows where someone humiliates one of the characters who always gets egg on their face and they're stuck getting humiliated. What the creators of South Park did was turn things around (I think they were watching a lot of Anthony Hopkin's movies including Titus Andronicus as well as Hannibal) and made it so Cartman doesn't end up humiliated at the end, but becomes a deranged kid, who ultimately does what all humiliated and picked on kids wish they could do to those who torment them. I know I used "humiliated" a lot in this comment, but it was either that or "tortured".

Something I’ve always pondered is, if South Park ended sooner, like, S5 or S6, this episode could very well be viewed completely differently.
Because technically, this is a textbook case of flanderization. You took a bully and manipulative kid and boiled him down to a sociopath, which he wasn’t in S1-3. If the show ended here, this would be viewed as a character derailment and might be hated.
But because the show just kept going, people eventually viewed the new sociopath Cartman as the norm, so instead of this being a derailment it’s seen more as a start and S1-4 Cartman is viewed as the outlier.

    • @sardonicus1739
      @sardonicus1739 ปีที่แล้ว +24

I disagree since this always seems like a natural progression of his character, and not anything forced or cheap AKA character developement. Like when that episode first aired everybody loved it, And talked about it. In that moment for all we knew the series could have ended next season, and yet I never heard anybody say that it was bad writing.
Meanwhile with a show like the simpsons, people were talking about how flanderized Homer was and how much worse it was getting when it was happening, and with family guy they were talking about how much worse the characters had gotten by season 5. We can tell when something is gotten worse while it happens.
Instead people were talking about how South Park was just getting better and better. It's more like when a series hasn't quite established its sense of humor yet and then starts to hit the steam in later seasons when it's finally starting to know what it's good at and what it's bad at. That doesn't sound like flanderization to me.

I don't even remember how old I was when I saw this episode. Sometime in middle school I think? Maybe even slightly before (~Mid-2000s). I remember when comedy central would do south park marathons every new years; that was how I ended up actually watching the show. Being alone or ill on new years, not much else to do and nothing else worth much on TV at the time.
I mentioned the rough time period because it's a little important. When I was first watching South Park, watching them mostly out of order and whichever ones CC felt like running, I kind of knew going into this episode that Cartman was pure evil. However, because of when this was, some of his other machivellian schemes from a bit later on in the series hadn't happened yet. He was just an unlikable but incredibly devious monster, with this episode being by far and large his blackest accomplishment. So even knowing he was completely evil going into this episode, it still didn't prepare me for what was, at the time, one of the single most messed up things I had ever seen.
I am glad that I wasn't too young by the time I started watching this show. I was a bit of a sensitive kid, so if I saw this any earlier on I probably would have been scarred by this. Got kinda lucky on that one.

I'm so glad that you've started watching South Park. The episodes based on the 2000 Election and the Terry Shivo case (I think that one was Best Friends Forever) were especially impressive when you realize that they were happening at the same time as what they were parodying.

I've been watching south park for years, like more than 10 years, getting close to 15 years. And the thing that I love about it is how well crafted the episode are, this is my binge show, I don't usually just binge the show once, I'll watched it 2 or 3 times in a row, or only take a week break in between binges to watch a pallet cleanser. HOWEVER, I never caught onto the MULTITIDE of pig references in this episode, and it's one of my favorite episodes. So many of these references went straight past me because I hadn't seen album art or certain movies. Honestly, for as crude of a show that you can ABSOLUTELY say that it is, it's well done.

could you maybe do a breakdown of the smog episode where kyle and his family allmost die?? id like to hear someone elses thoughts on why cartman would not only save kyle and his family, but not tell anyone (apart from butters) and not try to use it for his own personal gain

I saw this when it originally aired and Cartman feasting on Scott’s tears was the perfect psycho cherry on the revenge sundae. Re the pig references - “long pig” was reputedly how certain cannibalistic tribes in the Pacific referred to their human meals.

Its just a masterfully crafted piece of TV. It puts the biggest asshole of the entire show against a way stronger opponent, a kind of david and goliath situation, up to the point where you actually sympathize with cartman. All the situations he gets into just seem like they could happen in real life if a bully was creative enough, up until the point where they flip the entire script with eric's big reveal. I wish I could see that episode again for the first time...
