The most "Steve Vai" cover I've ever heard. You absolutely nail every nuance. It's the little pauses, slides, and notes-from-nowhere tremolo work others miss that you crush. It's stunning, really. If I did not know this was a cover, I would have thought it was the original. I'm sure you get tired of hearing this, but, you are the best at this. Amazing.
The slide up to those octave notes at 1:45 is so tough. If you miss it, you gotta start all over. It is moments like that where I would freeze up. Again, this is a masterclass, my friend. The notes aren't hard. It's all there for anyone to learn. This is one of Steve's most naked and vulnerable pieces. Yet, you just capture the sound like it's breathing to you. Totally surreal.
I don't have the exact setting anymore, but on the Retro 2A3 I used broad boosts and boosted a bit of 100Hz, and lot at about 8k. The GML 8200 was doing more surgical work, so I don't know exactly what I did there. The key was to push settings around until the parts started to "sing." It will end up being very different for each person's set-up. The settings actually differ quite a bit for me every time I set up to record. I'll look into doing a "making of a cover" video if you would like!

Thanks so much! This was done using a DNA through a legacy head with a Marshall 1960 Lead cabinet. Onboard distortion on the Legacy amp, just guitar and amp (no pedals), with some reverb, delay, flanger, and micro-pitch shift added via the studio outboard gear. (Reverb from Lexicon 300, delay from Yamaha D1500, flanger from MXR Blue racked flangers, and MPS from an H3000.) Guitar cabinet was recorded using an SM57 and a Coles 4038 through API 312 preamps, an API 2500, and I believe the GML 8200.
