Searched proper way to use tonfa for writing my fiction and ended up here. I love how you explain it. But I wonder how you can move them without falling.
That is great, good luck with your writing! Thank you for your comment! I have another video on how to use the tonfa (th-cam.com/video/tYKrEm_BWf4/w-d-xo.html) if you are interested. You have to have a good grip so they won't fall, but also have to let them loose in order to move them around.

Bonjour From Quebec. Cool Video. I just started to practice a month ago and I am glad to have found your video today. I did not know that my tonfas are too small for me. You made me realised that. Thanks. Practicing tonfas is really cool. Seeing how smooth you make them move motivates me to put more time in my practice. Peace. :)
Random thought but at 9:32 I noticed the arm cuff of your gi kept catching the tonfa, hence why you roll up your sleeves. However, what if the gi actually helps those using tonfa by not only providing the arm some padding, but also the longer cuff slightly catches the tonfa and slows it a little bit just by the added resistance and friction of it once its extended one rotation. This would stop it from over-rotating and keep it in line with the fore-arm maybe? Probably isn't very effective in practice, but perhaps it could work.
That is actually a good idea, thank you. I usually roll up the sleeves as it bothers me that the tonfa keeps hitting my uniform. Not much padding though! The thing is, the longer you practice the tonfa, the sweatier your palms get then you will have trouble rotating the tonfa! Over rotation is not a problem then :D Interestingly, the tonfa only rolls well enough if it is aligned with your forearm.
I use handcuff crutches and I noticed that the design was kind of like the Tonfa and I wanted to try it it works pretty good I just have to watch out for the cuff other than that it worked
Spin it on the enemies jaw you can poke but quickly spin it back to block hold it like she holds it on the first 1 second of the video correct me if I am wrong
Sick moves thanks for the techniques. I love the Tonfa… I just bought an aluminum pair today that I am loving. I also love the Sai! Two of the best weapons the tonfa and the sai
Actually ended up here why checking some moves, i have learned some more but havent done anything with Tonfas in the last 20 to 25 years, while now i am actually thinking about adding a Cosplay to my Style which uses a Tonfa Lightsaber Shotu style and a long Lightsaber, so the Tonfa will b e left hand only and about 24 inches longer then the usual Tonfa. Even while i am both handed i am not sure if i can manage to get the left hand distanced enough from the right to use both at the same time without losing control.
remember the old kung fu flicks and martial art tutorials , my favorite weapon was the three- quarter staff. I don't know about Hungary but in the eighties in California , the tonfa and nunchuku were banned on the streets.
Most martial arts weapons are probably not legal to use on the streets in many countries, but you can still learn and practice them in your local martial arts club as a registered martial artist. The interesting thing is that most of these weapons (nunchaku, tonfa, three quarter staff etc.) were used hundreds of years- if not a thousand years - ago by regular people, mostly civilians/farmers who were just trying to defend themselves against rogue warriors using swords. The police in most places use the tonfa as their basic equipment (they call it baton and use only one not properly). I think the nunchaku and the three quarter staff are good too but more difficult to use them as you can hit yourself hard.
Thank you very much! I am glad to hear that you have found it useful! I have another tonfa video for beginners: th-cam.com/video/tYKrEm_BWf4/w-d-xo.html And now working on another video for more advanced tonfa techniques.
Very good question! The tonfa is not part of the official Taekwon-do ITF teaching set, but my master liked it and has mastered it and decided to dedicate time for it in our dojang to teach it to us.
Good for summer (Okinawa) but the part that bothers me is how often people wear coats with bulky sleeves and limited movement shoulders. I do like how one's grip isn't as vulnerable to a sliding blade along the weapon, like a staff is vulnerable in that way.
There’s a form I see used with the tonfa a lot what’s it purpose? The form I’m talking about is used in shows like avatar the last air bender (azula vs aang)and jujutsu kaisen (Megumi vs Kamo)

Really good video but just one thing you need to twist the tonfa into the lower part of your arm when doing a block or a punch to keep it from moving this is hard to do quickly but it will come with practice. And also there are two ways to use it one is where you move your arm and body to get more power and the other one where you try not to since it’s more stylish.
Thank you for the tips! Check out my new tonfa video: th-cam.com/video/PlNQTOfdYss/w-d-xo.html and let me know what you think! Next video is coming up, mixing tonfa moves and Taekwon-do :)
Tuifa aka Tonfa from Shureido in Okinawa don't have that grip issue they don't make your sweaty either. The powder is kind of a cheat. Better to get a weapon that isn't coated like the American makers love to do.

Tonfa are two of my favorite Okinawan weaapons (the other being Tekko), and I've heard that you can grip the long end of the haft (if I can call it so) and use the handles to hook and give it a little more power in the strike, similar to a club.
I see, you might consider fixing that, maybe you can put ducktape around the handle or some kind of sponge just before the end so your hand won't slide up.
You actually have to have a tight grip when you are holding onto the tonfa and stopping the spinning motion. But of course, it is a different weapon than a staff or a sword.
Mine is a heavy alloy baton, the outer half of the side handle has a rotating grip, the inside grip is fixed solid, so it can be held firmly between the thumb and index, to spin and strike, and gripped with the lower portion of the hand to stop it from spinning. So it has the added advantage of a solid grip while spinning.
sadly in California you can do almost nothing to defend yourself. No guns, no knives, no collapsable batons....fortunately you can carry a full can of grizzly mace and a tonfa. So I am going to learn more about this amazing defensive tool and also take up martial arts. I need to have some way to defend my wife who is planning on becoming pregnant with our first child in a few months. I came from Delaware and there we were able to carry a pistol for self defense. I am not used to not having the great equalizer around to help stop threats. Now I must make the most of what I can.
It is good that you want to learn self defense. Good luck with your tonfa practice, make sure that you keep safe and sound and don't go to places where you can get into trouble. The best self defense is the one you will never have to use.
i didn't realize, those were the same things that some police officer have in usa, they don't bother, they have gun, but yeah those photos of policeman in like eastern European country i can see, very interesting i remember the video game tekken, the girl had two of these, very effective weapon!

I practiced a little bit also with this video. Then they catches me with the tonfas and took them away. 😅 This ruined my day. But the video is great!
Oh I am sorry to hear that you are in the hospital! I hope that you are getting better and soon be able to leave. First I thought that you are in hospital after practicing with the tonfas😅I hope that your father will give the tonfas back to you and you can keep practicing again. Stay safe and healthy!
What made you choose this sport, if I may ask? Why not kenpo or self defense ? It is better because you nan not always carry Tonfa with you .I did Nunchaku long time ago ,but I realised that I should practise other sport to defend myself ,so chose Judo for over ten years .Now iam doing Jiujutsu and karate and Sinwali.
A lot of emphasis on spinning in this. Spinning is a good exercise, and it looks really cool, but it telegraphs way too much for actual combat. It's better for learning limb control. In real combat, it should be limited to only when you need to change your grip to extend the long end out, or pull it back in. If you're just going to swing it right back in, don't waste the time swinging it out.

First I thought that you are in hospital after practicing with the tonfas😅I hope that your father will give the tonfas back to you and you can keep practicing again. Stay safe and healthy!
@@NoraTKD Hahaha thank you! Yeah, after practicing in the hospital sure... 😂😂😂😂😆
Too easy tqs cause I have already learnt to use nunchucks so that's why it's easy
After learning this i'm still no match from my mom's sword (broom)
For some reason, women who could beat the shit out of me make me happy
A lot of emphasis on spinning in this. Spinning is a good exercise, and it looks really cool, but it telegraphs way too much for actual combat. It's better for learning limb control. In real combat, it should be limited to only when you need to change your grip to extend the long end out, or pull it back in. If you're just going to swing it right back in, don't waste the time swinging it out.
It is all about learning control and accuracy :)
Complimenti. Ma
