The 2015 Mets were a .500 ball club against the entire league for the season outside of the beat down they put on Philly that year which accounted every one of their wins to get over .500. Nobody thought they could beat the mighty Dodgers in the NLDS and they went all the way to the WS. It doesn't matter how you get to the playoffs it's that you get there. and have a chance.
When healthy I believe the Mets can compete with anyone. I also believe that we can add and subtract while still competing. I agree with you about trading off some pitching depth.
Most important is Mets won season series vs. the Cubs. This gives them the tie breaker for the wildcard, if needed. With all these NL teams clumped together around .500, the tie breakers against those teams will be huge.
Bing a Mets fan since 1970, I realize that many times you are forced to see a silver lining in tough situations. Sometimes you need a microscope to find. As bad as what happened to Diaz was (three Mets pitchers in the last 15 months to receive the same suspension, UGH) I must say I really admired How Francisco Alvarez took charge of a completely kaotic situation and kept everybody focused on getting those final three outs. There was no way they were going to lose! That usually does not happen when the Mets face one of these unbelievably crazy situations. We just have to keep hitting like we have been to minimize the loss of Diaz! The metal of this team will be really challenged during these next 10 games. Let's sweep the Subway Series! If you are a Mets fan no explication needed. If you are not a Mets fan no explanation will do! Absolutely love this show!!
Keith Hernandez(will be 71 years old in October) is under contract through the end of 2025. He could retire after that. Gelbs or Todd Zeile are the obvious choices to replace him. Probably Zeile as he is an ex-player. Somebody I'd like to see get a shot is Daniel Murphy. He has a great voice and a former player's perspective too.
Happy Monday to my favorite podcasters and thank you again for the great work. I'm pretty mad about Diaz and his suspension. Hopefully the bullpen can hold it down for the foreseeable future. Overall I'm excited about our Mets and am so thankful that they have saved the season. LFGM!!!!!!
Love the episode. I think ideally the Mets optimize their roster to be competitive no matter what. That means trading underperforming ie Jeff McNeil and trading for pieces from our starting pitcher depth. We could use a hitter and bullpen for certain.
@@WhyMetsPod I have my own baseball youtube channel @TechincallyAnalytics, its not specifically Mets content but I do like to listen to Mets podcast often.
Gary, Keith & Ron ----> Gelbs, Zeile & Blevins. Daniel Murphy signed on to announce some Mets' games, backing up regular announcers, for 2024 Spring Training. Murph is a possible replacement for Keith too.
I don’t think the Mets need to win game 2 but they do need to touch up the Dodger bullpen and make it competitive. I think Mendoza forgot how to manage with days off and rested arms. It was a good idea in Philly because everyone else was tired and Senga was the only guy who didn’t pitch. The Dodgers have 3 MVPs in their lineup. This is the most dangerous lineup the Mets have or will face this postseason.
In the standings, they always show the record in the last 10 games(L10). The Mets have been 8-2 in the L10 column for the past 14 days straight(Jun 15-28, inclusive).
@@WhyMetsPod Except the not optioning Megill loss and maintaining the one man short status in the bullpen. Either Mendoza or Stearns is to blame for the loss on Saturday. They should have optioned Megill or Stewart and added another arm.
A rather sticky situation with Edwin Diaz. But definitely one with much substance to it. 😆Seriously, the trading deadline has become more complicated now with the increased amount of playoff teams. Thus, less teams who are sellers. In the NL, other than Marlins and Rockies, nobody is out of the playoff mix. While in the AL, outside of the White Sox, A's, and Angels, everybody is still within the realm of post-season possibility. Kudos to Sarah Langs. One of MLB's foremost analysts and enthusiasts.
As far as an easy schedule before the AS break, the Astros are the 2nd hottest team in MLB behind the Mets since May 30th. Mets are 17-6 and HOU is 17-8. HOU has won 7 in a row. Mets face them for 3 games this weekend.
Ottavino starts the landslide again. Enough! You know how well the Mets have played the last 30 days. Let's see what the bullpen ERA has done in those 30 days: Ottavino - 8.10 Garrett - 4.09 Diekman - 3.68 Smith - 3.52 Young - 3.52 Reid-Foley - 2.16 Nunez - 1.80 Houser - 1.32 Anybody see the outlier above? DFA Otto and bring up Matt Festa(RHP) or Walker(LHP).
The Mets brought up Ben Gamel to replace Marte, who was put on the 10-day IL, retroactive to June 23. The 32 year old, left-handed Gamel has hit well in AAA, hitting .314 with a .961 OPS and 7 HR playing RF. So no Baty, no Acuna, no McNeil in RF and no option of Stewart. I imagine if Gamel performs he will stick and Stewart will be optioned when Marte comes back.
Replacing Drew Smith and not Diaz reeks of Mendoza rejecting the option of Megill, because he didn't want to "punish" anyone else for Diaz mistake(ie. Megill).
If Diaz is suspended 10 games, you also lose his roster spot. I would like to see Megill optioned and bring up another reliever with Walker. When they need a 5th starter on July 2nd, option Walker and bring up Scott.
Last year(2023) McNeil hit well in the 2nd half: .291 AVG/.775 OPS. The Mets owe him $38.5M and they need his value to come up. Right now he has no trade value and can't be optioned. They are winning with him; his defense is good. Look for him to continue to play.
Jets last playoff appearance was 13 years ago. Last Superbowl was 55 years ago. Knicks last playoff appearance was this year. Last NBA Finals was 25 years ago. Mets last playoff appearance was 2 years ago. Last World Series was 8 years ago. Mets are best of the 3, although the Knicks are a bit reborn.
Wow. Just when I was Looking for a Mets girlfriend in south Florida. I need someone to Share my sadness with but hopefully share happiness in the near future with sterns and uncleStevie. LFGM!
It looks like Marte will be out for awhile, I'd like to see them put McNeil in right in his absence. Baseball is a funny, strange sport, and just the change of atmosphere of him being in a different position can be enough to spark his offense. He's a very streaky player offensively, and defensively, he's still one of their best players. I'd at least give this a try. Yeah, GKR was the only reason I watched the Mets during their rebuilding, losing seasons. I can't imagine how it would be without them. I've watched other teams, with other play by play/analysts.....and they are so boring
Enjoy the podcast! One suggestion...the minute and a half of sound bites before the show starts feels too much, would just shorten that a tad. Like that you came back to address the Diaz issue. Do we have any sense on how much time Baty needs to play at 2nd in Syracuse to become somewhat competent at the position? Seems like it took a massive effort to get him decent at 3rd base. It would obviously be great if he can transition quickly there....Im a huge McNeil fan in the past...how can you not root for the homegrown underdog that everyone including all prospect writers wrote off...its really sad to see whats happening this year. I actually wonder if some sort of injury is playing a role to have this huge of a drop off.
McNeil has zero game plan at the plate. When in hitters count he just throws bat at ball instead of driving a pitch of his liking. He has to go!!! The squirrel needs to find a new nest!!!
McNeil is a cancer for this team - horrible attitude, batting .212 - he's horrendous and his attitude is destroying the Met's locker room chemistry - he represents everything about 2023. They gotta eat the $34 million he's owed and .................. BRING UP THE FARM SYSTEM. Enough with overpaid worthless players.
Looking forward to Senga coming back, but he isn't a piece to rely on until he becomes a piece to rely on. I have been rooting for Tylor too, but I am where you two are. ☮🧡⚾🟣

I think Todd Z., Jerry B., and Steve G. could also be an unruly great bunch, but nothing like having two 86 dudes and an experienced radio guy.
As a 62 year old Mets, Jets and Knicks fan you have decades left of frustration, anguish, suffering, occasionally interjected with joy, as Mets fans.

I think the Mets need a clear cut #1 starting pitcher. Don't really know what Senga can do, he's been injured most of the season.
