Interesting choice! I had a ‘72 GT6 which is the slightly more refined version of the spitfire with a hardtop, 2litre straight 6 and 4 on the floor with OVERDRIVE. They do shift given they weigh less than a ton. My GT6 had a few upgrades on it but would easily outpace a standard 1275 Mini Cooper s. There’s a few bits to look for on these, one being the rear suspension. You’ve found the issue with the dampers (fortunately very cheap to replace) just make sure the rotoflex donuts on the rear drive axles are actually intact before doing any spirited driving. Whilst I’m on the subject, there was a problem on the MK1&2 GT6 whereby the rear wheel would tuck under the car under heavy cornering and when back under load again would cause some interesting driving response. This may also be a characterful attribute of the spitfires too. Most of this I’m sure Tom will be aware of, or may have already noticed. However there are two other issues you need to be weary of. I had to replace the front vertical links on mine complete with rose joints as the lower trunnion rotted away and eventually gave way, leading to me bringing Coventry to a standstill after my wheel fell off. -could be funny for a video, but these aren’t the safest of cars. Secondly, and less dangerous, there’s a banjo bolt that if I remember correctly goes into the manifold. Try not to touch this unless you really have to. They’re different metals so they corrode and weld themselves together. Easiest just to get a new manifold (like I did). There’s plenty of following for the spitfire and if I can help at all, reach out to me. No expert but I used mine on the daily for about 3-4 years so I have a fair idea with these. Oh and as for upgrades: just get some twin SU carbs, will go much quicker than the standard strombergs - just make sure Tom gets the correct needles for the jets 😅 Nice work boys. These are tiny tin metal boxes but really good fun. They even kinda drift and the camber is easy to adjust on the front axle too. Have fun chaps, interested to see WHEN it breaks down 😅😮😚
I also had a 72 GT6 which I drove daily for 3/4 summers. Lovely cars and as you say the straight 6 really gives it some umph! add the overdrive in and they're a lovely cruiser too. I got rid of the rotoflex doughnut setup and replaced with CV driveshafts to eliminate the issue, lost that "wind up" feeling when you put your foot down and made it much snappier and gave more overall confidence. That plus the "trunionless" rose joint setup from Canleys, 123 tuned electronic ignition, koni dampers all around and polybushes and the car was truly sorted. Funnily enough now drive a Mini Cooper Sport (MPI later model) daily and as you say GT6 is much faster plus better cruiser, but my kids can fit in the back of the Mini hence the change,
@@jh565bb I get what you’re saying there, but I’m of the opinion that the MX5 is old enough to be a classic now (albeit not 40 years old yet). All three are great cars though
THIS IS ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME AS MY EXPERIENCE!!! I bought a Spitfire MK4 and I came across a whole bunch of issues like this, I have paperclips instead of fuses, a piece of tinted plastic instead of sun visors, missing bolts holding the body to the chassis!! The list goes on... BUT it is balanced out by the fact it is a cheap entry level classic that is simple to work on and fun to drive about in the summer with the roof down! It doesn't have to be a full nut and bolt rebuild job to scratch that itch, It has certainly done that for me, I'm actually selling mine this summer for sub £3k too for the next person to enjoy. Good to see this car on the channel!

The rear wheels on a Spitfire are meant to sit like that when up in the air. Thanks to transverse leaf rear suspension. They all do it. :) I've got a Herald with the same engine, just done a track day at Castle Combe in it, loads of fun!
I have a MGB GT 1979. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. It’s the only car that gives me a damn drivers smile. Just you, the car and the road and like Tyler said. Every drive in it is an adventure. If a classic car doesn’t scare you into getting RAC it’s not a good classic ahahaha.
I restored an MGBGT, but it never gave me the feeling I expected when I drove it. It was okay, but never as special as I thought it would be. So I sold it and bought a Spitfire 1500, which I then also had to repair far more than I really wanted to. But the Spitfire gives me that special experience every time I drive it. Perhaps though, it is something as simple as the roof difference.
Such fun little cars. I had a '79 1500 with overdrive and loved blasting along country lanes. Fit some spax adjustable dampers and it'll help a lot. The O/D box works in 3rd and 4th giving you 6 gears.

I have a 1977 Spitfire 1500, and I can say that the “oil explosion” on the bonnet is oil splatter from the front oil seal around the timing chain. Not that bad of a fix and should be well within the extra budget. Also, new shocks and new bushings on the front anti-roll bar makes that Mark IV a whole new vehicle
I've always heard about the era of the British Leyland cars & how they were as solid as a carrier bag but the first 5 mins of this video has blown me away. I'm surprised the windscreen pillars don't deform from the wind itself at 70mph.
I live in the equivalent of an ULEZ zone in my country. I hated it at the beginning. Now we get way less traffic when I want to use my car, I can breathe out and metros and buses come more frequently so I don't HAVE to use my car. Hang in there, is painful at the start, but it's better later

16:00 ...And that is why you get an MG Midget/ Austin Healey Sprite instead of a Spitfire... No swing axle suspension lol. Speaking as a 1500 Midget owner, see if you can tune up the engine with K&N filters, a sports exhaust and new jets in the carbs, makes all the difference to the way it drives.
If you knew anything about triumph spitfires, you would know the swing axel was a thing for the mk 1/2 and early 3. Later iterations of the car it was changed. Also your midget has a 1500 spitfire engine in it, and because of its design, it can't even have overdrive. Why would they buy an inferior car that not only relies in a triumph engine to run it, but will be screaming down the motorway because it doesn't have overdrive lol. Plus those things they called front bumpers they put on from factory are ugly.
I'd have 'The Spit'... I've ALWAYS loved them. My Uncle had one before buying a Sumbeam Alpine (his fave), but yeah, IF I had the money, I'd buy a good condition1500 w/Overdrive... 😏👍 😎🇬🇧
I owned a Spitfire 1500, great cars! But for certain as a unibody design with that much windscreen movement those sills in that car are not to good. The fact the car sags to that extent is another indication, and the filler on the b pillar. That cars just had filler and paint over the rust for sure, it’s a bodger. If your upgrading start with a uprated aluminium radiator - these things like to go nuclear the minute the suns out and you hit traffic, the original rads were not great, mix that with 40 years of sediment. Make sure you add a fuel filter before the pump, as you’ll have the needle and seat get stuck in both the carbs and you’ll have fuel gushing out the overflows. Check the fuel overflows have their pipes connected as you’ll have a bad day if they aren’t and the fuel goes straight onto the exhaust. Make sure your valve clearances are correct otherwise you’ll burn a valve real easy or run like crap! Honestly get the fundamentals right and these will be very reliable! Look after the old girl and she’ll take care of you Rory!

I think Rory did great! I mean the rusty Mini is cute but the Triumph is actually great looking! Sure in a race that Mini would destroy it probably (and by the looks of it also itself though). This is car worthy of restoration (Mini ofc also though).
I had a 73 and a 72, funnily enough in red. Great cars, good exceleration good handling. Very good cars when well maintained. Also your boot holds your fuel tank, worth remembering that. Also the 1500 was faster but had a weaker bottom end, engine wise, better with the 1300 that came with the mk 4 tbh and yes you could get that with overdrive. Treat her well, I know you lads like to make jokes ect, but those cars are special for many. I'm 30 now and it was my entry level classic, I had a lot of good memories in mine.

As someone who spent a couple years working on a Triumph Herald 13/60 with my dad (unfortunately he gave it up), I'm wanting a spitfire, easy to work on, and a lot of fun to drive, plus there's a company that makes fibreglass body panels, "Honeybourne Mouldings"
I have to say something about the spitfire. There’s been many on our driveway over the years. One thing I’ll never forget is they will unalive you if you’re not a good driver. When it lets go on the road it goes from bad to apocalyptic very quick. Bear that in mind when trying to have fun in that heavy peace of iron. Leisurely slow Sunday drives is where they’re best suited. Please don’t drive them in a sporty manor it will all end in an uncomfortable sudden stop. Good luck boys. Love this channel.
I remember being taken to hospital in one of these as a kid by a neighbour. We were having brick fights (coincidentally in Manchester) and I lost. Got to ride in a spitfire and a couple of days off school though. Not a bad day.
It almost doesn’t matter what Alex buys at this point. For the purchase category of the competition, Rory smashed one out of the park! I had a 1500 when I was a kid. What a machine!
I love that the British are so used to dreary British weather that the moment the sun comes out, they're completely blinded. Top video, lads, truly putting the heart back in TH-cam car programming where it should be.
I've found memories of the Triumph Spitfire as my nan had one when I was a kid, it wasn't on the road and lived in the garage but me and my sister used to love playing in it as kids.
That carb on the mini engine needs to be moved closer to the supercharger if you intend on driving it long distances, the carb will freeze being so far away.

I had one of these as my first car, now sadly rotting round the side of my house after blowing up the 1500 a couple years ago... the 1300 is the better engine, just stick that OD box on the back of it and it'll be perfect. They're fantastic fun when they work, just need some lowering and 6j wheels to make them come alive on the road - it can out-corner an MX5 if you don't value your life.
I’d love to see a crossover with TDC and all the gear along with drive tribe on some classic car adventure through Europe with TopGear style objectives !
Good thing about the spitfire is its a body on chassis, so long as the chassis is solid then you can patch up the body however you like. 😂 I had a MKIV back at the turn of the century, cost me £400 and sold sadly for £1150 on ebay a few months later. Still a bit sad I sold it.
Great little car one of the best cars you can buy for 3k. It's a car that you can still use everyday if you don't mind getting a bit wet when it rains. I've driven my 1500 to France and all over the UK. Good purchase
Haha classic british Leyland 🤣. All the body flex and the roof gap when up is fairly normal. Used to see it all the time when working on old british stuff. TR6 used to do it all the time

With Tom, Alex, Rory and Taylor together, it’s like watching a carry on film😂
Carry on Car-tings
As someone who spent a couple years working on a Triumph Herald 13/60 with my dad (unfortunately he gave it up), I'm wanting a spitfire, easy to work on, and a lot of fun to drive, plus there's a company that makes fibreglass body panels, "Honeybourne Mouldings"
If you get some wheels check out the classic spoked racing wheels with the central locking nut, this style really fits a spitfire
I had a Audi 100 GLS 1972, and it was superb! I highly recommend this .Or a Renault, Citroën or Ford from the 70's are good buys
Loved that eps.. Can't wait to see the third and the upgrade!
I love that the British are so used to dreary British weather that the moment the sun comes out, they're completely blinded. Top video, lads, truly putting the heart back in TH-cam car programming where it should be.
Had two of these, fun cars motors were less than desired went to a midget instead. Much more cramped but feels slightly more reliable.
I've found memories of the Triumph Spitfire as my nan had one when I was a kid, it wasn't on the road and lived in the garage but me and my sister used to love playing in it as kids.
i already love this series! excited to see more
Great series, looking forward to whatever alex has bought.
My dad had a spitfire 1500 in 2010 when I was 13, god I used to love it 😍 this brings back memories
Love the content! Thanks for the awesome Thursday entertainment!
Been waiting for this!
That carb on the mini engine needs to be moved closer to the supercharger if you intend on driving it long distances, the carb will freeze being so far away.
why wouldnt you have a picture of boris behind the ULEZ thing seeing as its his idea and he implemented it
Their argument falls apart if you start using logic
Well khan hasn't scrapped it has he?
That and it's not a scam
@@heyhey3887 go find out why he can't , top tip: it's because the Tories will take lots of money out of TFL if he does , same reason it expanded , wasn't his idea but grant schapps made him in return for more funding
@connortheandroidsentbycybe7740 did I say I disagreed with it? I purely said he didn't scrap it. I don't live in or around London so it makes no difference to me
Had me in stitches this episode.
Nice to see another British classic, and two I’ve got too! Two Spitfires and a classic Mini
Tom needs to join this challenge. Great video lads as always
Thanks for more laughs. There's a warm beer joke in here somewhere. Good ole Lucas Electrics! LOL!
Alex should know that his audience is not only from UK and we are not bored with Rory's car.
Seems like a great project car to have a blast on sunny weekends, I'd probably replace all the bushes
I’d love to see a crossover with TDC and all the gear along with drive tribe on some classic car adventure through Europe with TopGear style objectives !
Love the content, there’s always something different 🎉🎉
Loved the story about the car and rorys history with wanting one!
Great series! Curious to see what Alex will buy!
Good thing about the spitfire is its a body on chassis, so long as the chassis is solid then you can patch up the body however you like. 😂 I had a MKIV back at the turn of the century, cost me £400 and sold sadly for £1150 on ebay a few months later. Still a bit sad I sold it.
The Volvo 740 is 40 years old this year. Was it sold in the UK in 1984?
Yes. The saloon was anyway. The estates came out in October 1985 as a 1986 model.
You could always choose a 760 instead: they came out in 1982
Loving this series!
I love how Alex doesn't wanna own the show, and let Taylor and Rory shine. Which they DO!
Great little car one of the best cars you can buy for 3k. It's a car that you can still use everyday if you don't mind getting a bit wet when it rains. I've driven my 1500 to France and all over the UK. Good purchase
Still got my 1 of 9 1975 Vanden Plas 1500 up for 3k
The advert did not claim the spitfire was not rusty. In fact, it specifically stated the opposite and said that it was not, not rusty.
Yep, double negative there.
I absolutely LOVE my 1967 Triumph Spitfire MkII! It has ben my daily driver for more than 20 years!
The absurd ammount of filler is an upset as its a lovley little car! Really enjoying the series overall so keep it up alex!
You should see the amount of filler found in American classic cars!
I've got a T Bird from Canada and I wish it had that little filler in it
8:45 the mini cooper looks real big near Alex
I don't think there's another car based TH-cam that makes me genuinely laugh out loud so often?
😁👍
Taylor turned into Frankie Howard lol 😂
Great video lads 👏
I had a 1500 '81 registered car in the early '90 (odd it seemed like a classic them) , great fun!
I was listening to an old podcast and heard Alex talking about the Vauxhall Meriva. Please do a Vauxhall challenge lol!
Awesome
Shinanigans with classic cars 🤘
I love your videos, but the constant background music does my head in.
I do enjoy a good laugh and you three are the best very entertaining and a lovely Triumph Spitfire needs some love but looks ok and no rust so far
Haha classic british Leyland 🤣. All the body flex and the roof gap when up is fairly normal. Used to see it all the time when working on old british stuff. TR6 used to do it all the time
Tom is still the legend but Rory & Taylor's laugh had me going!
Good buying of the Spitfire Rory!
