I believe it's a re-working of an old American Gospel song, or was heavily inspired by it. I could be wrong. But what's funny to me is that if that's true, than this song has been reworked by Spacemen 3, The Brian Jonestown Massacre (Jesus), the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (Screaming Gun), and Kurt Vile (cover of the Spacemen 3 version). It was probably being strummed out and sung in the plains of Africa 1000 years ago, and it'll be interperated and re-interperated forever, because there is something magic in those two chords (E to A). This is soul music.
