one of the greatest songs of the 20th century.
Hearing it for the first time today.
27 years ago..when I was in university..
This is one of the best songs ever written. Richard Ashcroft is always amazing to listen to.
100% live... no miming, no backing track, no cr*ppy vocal autotune.... HUGE Respect!
Exactly pure live
lol bold of you to assume those vocals aren't filtered. they sound great. but that's a highly filtered vocal.
Interesting Geoff...I'd assume some EQ, Compressor (to take out the high end hissy stuff), and a smidge of reverb... I can't hear much else to be honest but you obviously know your stuff @@Geoff-pi3pb
i would be very surprised to learn that among the dozen or so filters it passes through, an autotune isn't one of them. even if 10% auto tune - still auto tune - i'd argue an SM57 running directly into a monitor would sound wildly different than what we get here, and that's not a bad thing@@BobHoopClassic

I'm 84 and I listen to this every night before my bed in case I die in my sleep.

Hey Stuart how you’re doing?

Proud of you brother!
Well done Brandon, massive achievement 👏work it coz your worth it 👍

Top 5 of all time
My brother knew the drugs don't work he stopped taking them telling me to tell no one ,motor neurone disease took him a year later RIP bro this was our song
This song came out as my Mum (only 52 years old ) had been given just a few months to live as cancer ravaged her body and brain, the drugs didn't work and 26 years later I still can't hear this song without crying but this version particularly brings it all home, just superb
Tocante ...
Paix amour bonheur soyez béni au nom de Jésus de Nazareth le Christ rédempteur Amen amen amen.
she lives through you mate ❤
My sincere condolences - but what a wonderful way to bring back the essential memories. I use this song for its angst and positivity to clear my kind of dark thoughts of loss. It's a way to get the demons out into the open. Grieving is good as long as it doesn't take over your life. As you say, superb version.
@@stephenmonaghan6030 thank you and sorry for your losses too, i'm at the age my mum was now and my Father has also passed having spent the last 5 years of his life in a care home with Lewy body dementia, that was actually worse than my mum as he just wasted away over time, however I am actually a positive person because i have a lovely family including two grandchildren which make me laugh and have fun, the circle of life eh, so like you say grieve temember but don't let it take you down.
What a voice, doesn’t get the recognition he deserves, top class musician
Because he puts on this horrific American accent when he sings.
Clearly one of a kind voice! Beautiful.
Was he not voted the best singer in the world a while ago?
I think he does it for the right reasons, never took to much spotlight and came back to it in his prime
Legend
The sound engineer did an amazing job with this mix. Richard's voice is simply amazing. Glad to hear he finally get the royalties for Bittersweet Symphony...
Yeah 20 years later after the stones squeezed every penny out of it. The joke is that they didn’t even compose the piece, but that’s another story
That was all down to Allen Klein their manager, being a greedy so and so. I’m pretty sure if he wasn’t around and instructing The Stones of what to do, they’d have signed over the rights to the song back to Ashcroft much earlier than they did.
I think the expressions on the faces of the other musicians in the room tells you that this is one hell of a performance.
Mate this is real shit, RA underrated af. This song is the purest of pain
Probably the only singer capable of recording a whole album in one take. The man is simply perfection. The best in my lifetime.

Oasis used to open up for 'The Verve' let's not forget that Richard Ashcroft is a fucking legend and one of the best singers in the world.
I went to watch Oasis at Earls Court in 97, just after the release of Be Here Now. The Verve supported them that night and absolutely blew Oasis out of the water! One of the finest live performances I've ever seen from Richard Ashcroft that night
Amen to that..... Timeless.... And you haven't got to be in a pub load of pissed up lads to sing along..... Proper, heartfelt.
The pain in the voice is pure. Love the new song, bring on the lucie

Such an underrated songwriter, singer and performer. His music is from the soul.
Simon thinks everyone should be auto tuned.
Not underrated by people who actually know good music, especially other musicians. I saw him in Boston with Liam, brilliant show.

I don't think Richard is a great songwriter, the songs he did on The Verve (and solo as well) aren't that beautiful or inspired as I used to think. But, his perfomances are absolute soul and passion. That's for sure.
Richard singing this song just actually makes me cry. And think of my parents and now how they’re both gone. A phenomenal creation. Thanks guys. ❤💕❤️💕❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down, my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm coming down
And I hope you're thinking of me
As you lay down on your side
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
But I know I'm on a losing streak
As I pass down by your street
And if you wanna show, then just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
'Cause baby, oh
If heaven falls, I'm coming too
Just like you said
If you leave my life, I'm better off dead
All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down, my Lord
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm coming down
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
'Cause baby, oh
If heaven falls, I'm coming too
Just like you said
If you leave my life, I'm better off dead
But if you wanna show
Then just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again, oh, Lord
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again, oh, Lord
I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more

Saw him live in Athens at Release Festival two.summers ago. Many Greeks actually didn't think to go or didn't really care. After the gig, it was talked about for days. He was amazing live and it was really great to see him performing better than the last time I saw him at V2000. He was simply brilliant.
What a voice!!! Now I got why Chris Martin said about Richard: the best singer in the world!
Never in doubt. Seen Ashcroft live a few times and gets better with age. Last year he supported Liam Gallagher and blew him away in Dublin.
What an era for music, I started the nineties as a 15 year old Mancunian and ended the decade in my mid twenties. Through that time (in no particular order) i enjoyed acid house, old skool raves, nirvana, Madchester, oasis, the verve etc. wow how lucky I was.
The only song that can make me cry. If you've lost a loved one to an illness then it's impossible not to relate to this. Sending out a virtual hug to everyone who has. Keep strong ❤
He wrote this song for his father died by illness
Thanks, Bobby.....Have a beautiful life......😺😺😺

5 years today that my dad has passed away and I'm listening to this song... I means so much. Total respect to Richard for sharing his pain through this lyrics...
@@irenepfister7610my daddy has been gone for 27 years on Aug 28th. Doesn’t seem possible 😢
My heart goes out to the fellow peeps on here cos they miss their parent. Richard ashcroft perfectly describes the horror of seeing a parent going through cancer and not being able to do anything to stop it. When all hope is lost its crushing. I sang this song to my dad and held his hand. I hope more than anything i see him again.
On point, your correct. i'm still suffering 20 years later, i thought thing's got easier but i guess not :-(
My little brother died of an overdose and then this came out soon after... I always come back for a cry session. Miss you Gray xx
Clear Cloud sorry to hear I’m sure his looking down at you 🙏
Sorry to hear about your brother. I know what you mean, not much geta me to show my emotions, but this is one version of a song which is 100% guaranteed, within a couple of minutes will have tears rolling down my cheeks. How artists perform these beauties without themselves welling up remains a mystery to me. But I'm so so grateful the world has such talented people for us all to enjoy.
It's that line "just let me know and I'll sing in your ear again" that gets me every time.
Simply brilliant. The UK knows about him, and those in the know across the world do too, but this guy is, for me, the most underrated singer and writer of songs in the world.
Probably the best version of this song, ever. So glad Richard got the rights back. And what a time to grow up the 90s were.
As a middle age man now, all these songs have so much more meaning; Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Shed Seven, Verve... Damn. What a great time to be alive.
He never lost the rights to this song you doofus- it was bittersweet symphony you’re confusing it with.

This is Ashcroft at his best I am learning this on the guitar at the moment so so good
But that raw emotion, that unleashing of the pain and tears when it does punch you in the guts... That emotion is so pure and addictive. Just like the drugs. (yes I know the song isn't actually about drugs).

Velvet stuff. Boss man status here - this is an incredibly moving song sung not by a person but by a soul.

this is real music. It's like I can observe the aura of him, I can assure you that the boy is pure. Pure like his lyrics, pure like his beautiful music. Can you perceive? In a world of deception and wickedness, where even music no longer has value, it is only produced for careerism, this boy has always made music in an authentic and non-conformist way, reaching the point of touching the soul strings of anyone who has listened to him. Precisely because he himself is a true soul. He is an Azzurra blue soul. These are the angels that God sends to earth, thanks Richard. It's SO GOOD to hear Richard Ashcroft singing live... he's sounding great.
Phenomenal, his voice has actually got better after all these years. Can't help think of my grandparents whenever I hear this song, most of them died after horrid battles with cancer of one form or another. I have only two vivid memories of my dad's dad, one of which is seeing him in his bed hooked up to breathing apparatus, too weak to move, and even as a kid I could see the suffering in his face. I was older when my mum's parents passed a few years apart, both of them suffered terribly and it was so awful to see not only their health declining but their will to live. The song is right, the drugs don't work, they prolong the suffering. One of my favourite.songs.of all time but it always put me in such a rubbish mood after 😅 fuck cancer.
