I believe Loraine is suffering from postpartum depression right after the birth of callum, this explains why she leaves callum alone in the car and why she was so unresponsive to the cop as well. On top of her preexisting mental health issues
Oh most definitely she was suffering from it, since she had no support system it was hard for her to do anything, especially bonding with her son. I think due to her never really bonding with him she grew to dispise him. I theorize that her mom also had postpartum depression, and that's why it was so east for her to leave. Sadly I think that if Loraine left Callum in fostercare I think it may have been better for the both of them
Probably. But iirc, the other games set in this universe confirms that all the supernatural stuff is real and Winter uses the park to siphon emotions in order to give him power and immortality. Some people have their negative emotions amplified and that's what's going on with Lorraine. Winter, as the Bogeyman, drove her to kill Callum so he could further feed off her despair.
@Kirsten Marie I don't think it took much convincing on her part to do so. I felt bad for her up until it seemed like she might kill him. I don't understand how someone isn't able to love their child, it doesn't make sense to me. But I understand her pain and turmoil towards that she doesn't love him, I wish the worse for her. Winter gave her the ice pick and held onto her as it went down, but he never forced her to kill Callum. He moved away and she did it anyway. He did have to nudge her very much, but she still made that choice herself.
I KNOW RIGHT! the casheer knowing Loraine i can accept that, she said she comes back there often, but him saying "you son Just Got in, i'll unlock the door" thats not a red flag, THATS A STOP SIGN
I think this might be obvious but I think callum was the kid found behind the cotton candy machine. With the themes of the games and characters seemingly snapping before the murders I don’t think the boogie man is real I think Lorraine just snapped one day and killed callum which is why she keeps going back to the park and why Hansel and Gretel keep coming up. The story is told through her perspective and her mind is deteriorating, she probably just snapped one day and killed her kid and she’s using the “park curse” to justify losing 2 people to the park
In the universe that The Park is set in, the boogie man does exist and in another game (Secret World Legends) set in the same universe you get to meet him.
I can never say enough how much I love psychologically scary movies or games. This game was so dark but this kind of horror can happen to anyone minus the supernatural aspects and implications. I think I appreciated the fact that not everyone takes to parenthood like it's the best thing ever. Single mothers are often abandoned and neglected by the same system that claims to fight against child neglect and abortion of unwanted pregnancies. Not all children need to be with their mothers. I liked that the game didn't spell out for us Callum's fate. We know something horrible happened. Poor Lorraine was doomed from the start. It doesn't need to be explained but she definitely had severe post partum depression coupled with grief of losing her boyfriend, Don. Everyone that could have helped Lorraine absolutely failed her and some people even abandoned her with full on cruelty. Callum should have never been given back to his mother.
@@lindinle you can still feel bad for her through the failings of the mental health system, PPD is really serious and when left untreated can cause heartbreaking situations, a little empathy can go a long way.
@@appalachiabrauchfrau Yet you continue to pay no thought to her kid Callum while continuing to instead excuse her for everything she probably did (Murdering her child). While heaping blame on anyone and everyone one in an attempt to try and deflect blame off of her. "It wasn't her fault, it was societies!!!!" An excuse and reasoning that would not hold up under other situations and when used with other demographics and which when used also again callously ignores any pain and suffering for anyone and everyone that isn't Lorraine.
This reminds me of the movie The Babadook. Postnatal depression can lead to psychosis and that is a darkness that consume a person’s mind. Most don’t realize that severe instances can of Postnatal depression can show up months after birth and it can last for years especially if untreated.
You realised that too? I thought the exact same thing when Lorraine started talking about how much she detested her son. The Bogeyman even reminded me of the Babadook in nature. A supernatural entity that forces its way into the mind of its mentally unstable prey and forces them to commit heinous acts. Expect mind you, I find The Park considerably creepier. No hate to The Babadook, it’s one of my favourite horror movies, but I think The Park is considerably creepier in both narrative and environment. It’s also WAYYY more messed up than the movie.
I saw the thumbnail of the video and even though I didn't watch it yet, I did see Daz check the game out last year. I remember seeing his reaction after seeing the park's mascot.
Thank you for covering this game. I played this a couple years ago. I was severely depressed and unemployed. I felt like I was alone, with nothing to my name. It was like a wake up call. The Park, and Getting Over It were both games that I guess inspired me to get my life together. Proud to say I’m in a better place. Thanks to games like this .
Callum should have stayed in foster care. Then he'd be safe and happy. Poor kid😥. Lorraine doesn't deserve her son. Im sorry for her, but to abuse her son is disgusting. I have a theory that she killed Callum like the witch in the Hansel and Gretel story. Maybe this was her way of saving him.
It’s funny how that’s how it is in real life, if a woman has obvious mental illnesses then the courts would still give the child to her but if a man has it then they have to jump through hoops just to see the child
@@biggiecheez4203 That's so messed up. So if the mom is a drug addict and abuses the kid, the courts will give them back with a smile on their faces but not the other more responsible parent? That makes no sense what so ever.
@@amterasutenma2547 I don’t know what they said because the comment is gone but it’s not like the kid had another parent to go to in this story. And irl the kid goes to the parent the court easily can prove is not on drugs and can provide for them and/or who the child wants to go with
@@Spooky_Platypus Oh. I don't know, jack, about the court process. I thought it was crooked and one-sided. Thank you for informing me on this mistake. Also BiggieCheez said it was that way.
Loraine has not had the best life, being left by her mom and somewhat neglected as a kid, her husband had passed away during her pregnancy, and having a pretty bad money situation after the birth of her child. She also didn't get any help she need, leading her to do actions that are emphasized but not confirmed. Truly a sad and sympathetic character.
not really. Lorraine despair would led to the boogeyman getting empowered by it, the Park is a supernatural location tied to the "Dreamers", beings who are trapped in a another dimension of sorts, the filth is the "Creep" that won't go away
It's worth keeping in mind that the Atlantic Island Park in which the game takes place is a dungeon in the Secret World MMORPG, with the Bogeyman as a boss fight in that park. So even if a lot of the specific imagery and sequencing can be attributed to her deteriorating me talk state or hallucinations, the Bogeyman and the other stories about the supernatural at the park like the Crows and Mascot are actually true things that occured, as well as the story of Nathaniel Winters.
There's this book called "Regret maternel" or maternal regret written by a French woman. Basically, it describes how she experienced maternity and how if she were to get a do-over, she wouldn't have kids. She says she loves her child more than her own life and makes the distinction between not liking being a mother yet still love her child. Maternal regret is rather taboo. Being a mother and finding that well, you don't like it and that it wasn't for you after having a child is hard to talk about. Women who experience such emotions are shamed into silence. This game's protagonist, Lorraine, not only experiences post-partum depression (and maybe even post-partum psychosis) but maybe also maternal regret. It's not that she hates her son, she just doesn't like being a mother. The hypocrisy of western society in that regard is limitless and cruel. Motherhood is glorified to an unhealthy degree and rarely described for what it truly is. It is full of joys yes; but also sacrifices, compromises and constant giving while getting very little in return. Just like being a father is not for every man, being a mother is not for every woman. Yet we accept more readily that some men are not made for fatherhood and expect that all women are made for motherhood at the same time. I am the grandchild of a woman who definitively should *NOT* have had children. Of course it is because she did that I am here but I can still acknowledge that she was so not made for motherhood and how she screwed up her children mentally and emotionally. This game is genius in how it addresses those taboo issues of maternity, depression and regret. The cannibal metaphor I think can be interpreted in many ways. The one I favour is how Lorraine felt she was "devoured" by her role as a mother, devoured by her child and all the expectations laid on her. Expectations she was not ready for and never wanted in the first place. Motherhood really needs to be redefined, or rather just parenthood in general. The emotional charge on women's mind is just so heavy... The role and place of the father figure too needs to be re-thinked. Space for dialogue, emotional acknowledgment and validation is much needed. If only to spare future generation from experiencing the same traumas all over again.
That was a very insightful comment. As a man I have to admit everything you say is true, and since it doesnt really directly concern me or affect me (not being a woman and therefore not being able to be a mother) I have never thought about it before. But this helped me understand the pressure some women go through better. For the "modern" world we live in there is still way too much stigmata, stereotypes and social pressure in our society. For women and men alike. These bullshit hundreds of years old expectations and views we hold towards men and women are very toxic.
@@HalloTschuesspeople like you are so gullible These “traditions” aka practices are tried and tested methods which helped us to overcome and sometimes even subdue another group Of course some things may need to be changed but calling things that helped my group a toxic you are nothing but a vile venom

For me, I believe the boogie man and other stories is not real and is a urban legends where Lorrine lives. Lorrine's severe depression and mental instability had lead her to killing her own son and leaving him at the park. In her guilt, Lorrine imagined the boogie man was manipulating her. But she finally accepts the truth if her crimes and turned herself in
@@Genesiscoupe3000 Pointing out a character is canon as existing in a long-standing mmo in the same setting, in no way is trying to excuse real life violently ill people?
All theories are valid. But I also want to point out that This game along with another called Moons of madness. Are tied to another MMO game called the Secret World. As the Bogy man and the park are part of the first "Issues" (Think comics) of the game. Which deals in the occult. I don't remember much of the lore for that area. But the Owner of the park and the Bogy Man are one in the same. Using the children to basically live forever and corrupting others. But obviously its easier to target those who already have their own demons. So Loraine is dealing with Depression and the like with the demonic Bogy man using it so he can get Callum's soul.
The Park makes more sense if you play the game it originated from: The Secret World/Secret World Legends. Although in Secret World, you aren't some hapless victim in Atlantic Island Park, you deliberately go there and fight the Bogeyman with all the firepower you have. It also confirms that the Park was not some hallucination or it was all in Lorraine's head. The Bogeyman is very much real and it's probably implied that Nathaniel Winters is the Bogeyman itself.
Nathaniel Winter is The Bogey Man. I think the beginning was the detective asking Lorraine where the last place she saw Callum was, but she was in a deluded state, so in her mind she saw the detective as the ticket taker asking where her son's teddy bear was.
I honestly believe that Loraine imagined this all. That the whole park is just a representation of her mind. That her son was taken away because she did something bad, something very bad and the game is her broken mind trying to understand it all.
Actually Solomon Island where this park is located has a lot of streets named after horror writers, horror movies and horror literature. The name of a school is Innsmouth Academy , like the story of Shadow over Innsmouth
I had only ever watched markiplier play through of this game so I had a very take on this game. I thought that Lorraine with all her trauma killed callum but was actually chad herself and was killing people in the park. I’m glad to have watched this to get the full story and the bits that were missed
The story of this game is more satisfying when taken as a stand alone and read as an allegory for mental illness, addiction, trauma, post-partum psychosis, grief, etc. But "The Secret World" and "Carnival of Souls" confirm that the Bogeyman and curse are real and the amusement park is used to amplify and siphon emotions from visitors, allowing Winter to access some sort of dark power as said Bogeyman and grants him immortality. The illuminati even come into play at some point. I mean, holy cliché tropes Batman!
Yeah, I'd say that's the older method of electroconvulsive therapy as modern version of it are 1. only used as a last resort and 2. done on unconscious patients.
To get the full picture you need to look into the original horror MMO this game split off from, the park area and the boogey man are both in the game with the Boogey Man acting as a boss enemy, you can even find a note from Loraine somewhere in the game.
shes a good example of those parents who dont realize that they decided to have a kid, or keep one. it bugs me how parents become parents without knowing what it takes. parents who been thru it know. she is a great example of a villain in a game. she had motives against a child bc of how much work it was, and she blamed the kid instead of blaming herself for her own ignorance and ultimate violence.
I get what you mean, but there is also things like post partum depression and psychosis are things that can't always be predicted and getting proper help for them is a difficult task even when you do have money, which Lorraine clearly did not have. Obviously her actions are not excused by this explanation, but it is something to consider.
For those who don’t know the boogie man is from the secret world rpg he was killed by the players so atleast he never got away with his crimes he is also a man who became a monster feeding off the fear of children to stay immortal
I think it is important to know that this game ties in with "The Secret World" an mmo where you revisit the park and there actually is a demon haunting the place.
so we know the witch is her mental health. she cares about calem, she talks about how she feels like they are hansel and grettle. she feels like it’s them against the world. but there money and mental state kept getting in her way. (in her mind) she became abusive and abrasive at times, and that part of her was the witch. which she also directly states but it is also heavily implied it’s also implied her parents are abusive, part of the boogeyman is torturing kids into good behavior. i think she becomes even more guilty of her being voilent to her kid, because it happens to her. she felt weak. she killed her son, ate him and then said he went missing. the boogeyman did haunt the place, i do believe that. i think she also started drinking i don’t think she remembers the killing part. JUST that his son got lost. i think she keeps coming back to the park even years later (why the park is now abandoned and we see the first time she lost her son vs now. plus the context clue line about her always coming back to the park. i think this is years later the ordeal and she forgets and remembers things until during this visit, she remembers everything and relieves what she did
I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not, but the fact that the the mention of Dunwich in the medical services implies a possible Lovecraft/cosmic horror implications to the story. While this isn't in the same universe, in Fallout 3 and 4 there are two locations with some supernatural things going on that have the name Dunwich in them (Dunwich Building in FO3 and Dunwich Quarry in FO4), the fact that name shows up here is something. Also the fact that the Dunwich emergency services seemed to let a mentally unstable person out and get their kid back seems suspicious, like they were working with the monster/Nathan, or at the very least inflenced by something greater. Also the shirt that Calum is wearing at the end has Cthulu on it for fucks sake. Basically there's a real possibility that there's elements of H.P. Lovecraft/cosmic horror responsible for the events of the game and what happened at the park itself.
i have two theorys 1. was that she murdered callum and because of her loose grip on reality it came up with that whole story 2. is that the boogey-man is actully mr winters cause just look at the way hes dressed
Boogeyman is MR Winters transformed by absorbing the negative emotions of the visitors of the park and the laughter of children. The park is in fact a machine to keep Winters immortalized as the boogeyman
I saw Markiplier played this years ago and I assumed that she blamed Callum for all misfortunes that happened to her ever since he was born. Everything was a retelling of how it all started up until the point she couldn't take it and took matters to her own hands. After that, she filed a missing persons report and started recalling the events right from the beginning (with details she left out, of course).
Interesting how when she discovers the replica of the house her and Don lived in, she refers to Callum as "his" [Don's] son. Not "our" son. This pretty clearly reflects her detachment from Callum. That he isn't part of her. That he isn't something she feels innate desire to care for. It oddly paralleled the note Loraine's mother wrote to her. About Loraine being more "his" daughter than hers.
While the theories about this being grief/all in her mind, there is the Dev's other game The Secret World, in which The Boogeyman is a real being. So all of her hallucinations are true/based on her reality, but made even more vivid by the actual monster. Which is even more terrifying, dealing with an actual monster while being someone with serious mental issues.
Something that took me a while to notice is how the person that is interrogating Lorraine at the end had a bee on a bottle. This was in order to confirm if Lorraine had the blessing of the bees and had acquired demi god like powers, Similar to how your character on The Secret World / Secret World Legends gets their powers. Which could mean he is a recruiter for one of the 3 organizations… The Illuminati, The Templars or The Dragons

The part where he explains about Loraine (I think that's her name, I already forgot after 5 seconds of hearing it) thinking about her thinking of Calum and her as Hansel and Grettle felt like what I do when I have to write a 5 paragraph essay. Kind of
The game itself was a good watch. Next to the horror aspects, I actually got creeped out by certain details I connected that may provide a further backstory to the Park founder Nathaniel Winter. First, he was adamant on building the Park on apparantly cursed grounds, which already is strange. Then we learned he kidnapped kids from the Park and "extracted" their emotions, seemingly feeding off of their energy. Since he purposely chose a cursed place and used children, my mind immediately went to rituals regarding black magic. Another hint was the mention of "immortality" which can be interpreted from an entity perspective (food from negativity/strong emotions) or a person (I rather not go into too much detail here because it is f*cked up enough), it was then mentioned that a "mob" hunted down Nathaniel Winter. If we consider the possibility of his crimes against children, this reaction makes sense enough for people seeking justice, especially if the owner was most likely a powerful and influential individual who was protected by the state despite his crimes. Otherwise the Justice system would have dealt with him, not regular people. After he died, his evil deeds turned him into an evil entity himself who, in order to keep existing, relied on people like Laurene with strong negativity (food) and children (to continue with his sick desires).
I did a playthrough of this, and after I got to the end, I logged into The Secret World, the MMO this spun off from and beat the crap out of the Bogeyman for catharsis. He's not so tough when you have a shotgun.
Bought this on my nintendo switch last night didn't take long to beat but was a very eerie intriguing story. Half of the time it feels like your on Lorraines drugs walking around an abandoned park falling apart. I think Lorraine quit taking her pills and was growing very irritated with her son having mental health issues and just wanting to get rid of him. I think he ran away from home(to get away from his abusive mother) to the place his dad was last at before he died( the park) or Lorraine was playing hide and seek with him at the abandoned park(hence why Callum kept saying come find me) and the chipmunk dude was still living there in the house of horrors. Having read the newspaper articles and concluded that a lot of tragedies have happened here, Lorraine takes this into consideration. The chipmunk dude killed him and Lorraine knows it so she goes to the cops and is having mixed feelings about it somewhat feeling guilty and trying to plant false memories to help her feel better and cope with it hence why she stabs him in her recollected memory because she feels like a bad mother.
I have played this game completely few years ago. I'm glad you covered this especially those articles that I just picked up to tl;dr out of it. Thank you, I felt that sadness on how it end all over again
Lorraine would be a great killer in dead by daylight Her whole gimmick could be having slabs in the basement that sacrifice survivors automatically after like a minute or two when they’re placed upon them and not rescued within the time limit Her weapon is obviously an icepick and her personal ability makes nearby survivors scream or something She could be called the bogeyman And she could have like a scarecrow motif Another idea for her ability would grabbing people somehow slowing them down and bringing them towards her similar to death slinger but a little bit of cenobite mixed in
The ending being left ambiguous is an excellent statement, because it truly doesn't matter whether or not the factors were Supernatural. At the end of the day, there's a child gone, a mother grieving, and anyone who hears the story will form their own opinions in lieu of facts.
Dunwich... Nothing good ever comes from being tied to the Lovecraft universe of eldritch abominations, cosmic horror gods, and insanity inducing scenarios.
I think Lorraine abused and killed her son. There are somany references to Hansl&Gretl, the mother in that story is not kind and does not want her children. Also, in the end she says that in the original story the mother and the witch are both the same person 🤷♀️ With all the references to canibalism too I wonder if she actuallly ate him too 😅 Since she says her heart and head go to the park, I imagine she went to the park after she had already killed her son where she came accross the bogeyman/Mr Winters and she was chasing her son’s ghost. Not accepting that he was already gone by her own hand. Even the bogeyman says that Callum had fallen in the hands of the witch (=the mother) 🤔
I think Nathaniel is the bogeyman. The land corrupting him, making him do things and turning him in what he is today. It explains a lot and in this shot right here, you can see the bogeyman has the same hair has Nathaniel 26:22
So, I agree that she suffered from postnatal depression. However, I don't believe the memory loss was from possession or manipulation by the boogeyman. Memory loss is a well established side effect of electroconvulsive therapy...
Lorraine is a character i can't be sympathetic towards, she's resentful towards her son, who is the ONLY remaining memory of her husband. And at some point in the game, you find a dead body of a man behind a building with a axe on the wall. I think it's implied she killed this employee who wanted to check on her since she's been in there for a while, she's also wearing a hatchet necklace, which i think is a implication that she is the one who killed her own son, everything we see was in her mind, she snapped.
I hate to break it to you buddy but unfortunately due to what's happening in the United States certain states have ban abortion completely. To the point where you can go to jail even if you have a miscarriage. Also I know you mean well but this kind of spits in the face of certain victims of abuse.

So I’m guessing that this was one big allegory for her killing her son, stylized in a way where she tried to justify her murder by a supernatural entity forcing her to. The police interrogation we see at the end likely ended with her being arrested for murdering her son.
Havent watched the video all the way yet but I remember watching either markiplier or jacksepticeye play this and the ending confused me. An excuse and reasoning that would not hold up under other situations and when used with other demographics and which when used also again callously ignores any pain and suffering for anyone and everyone that isn't Lorraine.

You realised that too? I thought the exact same thing when Lorraine started talking about how much she detested her son. The Bogeyman even reminded me of the Babadook in nature. Yea, he loved his mom even after all she did
The voice acting for Lorraine is very well done

??? Nah we good on that lil bro

I have to say, as a medical-type, the doctors note at 24:50 is the funniest thing I've seen in a while.
*Dr. Malpractice AWAY*
My thoughts exactly.💭🧸🍾🍷
She didn’t. This is part of the Secret World game universe, she was being manipulated by Winters and his negative enegery
Just want to point out the doctor's note said Dunwich, as in Dunwich Horror H.P Lovecraft. The son is wearing a Cathulu shirt. There's your spirits.

(in her mind) she became abusive and abrasive at times, and that part of her was the witch. which she also directly states but it is also heavily implied
it’s also implied her parents are abusive, part of the boogeyman is torturing kids into good behavior. i think she becomes even more guilty of her being voilent to her kid, because it happens to her. she felt weak.
she killed her son, ate him and then said he went missing.
the boogeyman did haunt the place, i do believe that.
i think she also started drinking
i don’t think she remembers the killing part. JUST that his son got lost. i think she keeps coming back to the park even years later (why the park is now abandoned and we see the first time she lost her son vs now. plus the context clue line about her always coming back to the park. i think this is years later the ordeal and she forgets and remembers things until during this visit, she remembers everything and relieves what she did
Indeed.🧸🍾👩👦🤰🤱🫄
Actually this is a tie-in game with The Secret World, in which the Lovecraft mythos is canon.
i have two theorys 1. was that she murdered callum and because of her loose grip on reality it came up with that whole story 2. is that the boogey-man is actully mr winters cause just look at the way hes dressed
The 2nd one is correct
Boogeyman is MR Winters transformed by absorbing the negative emotions of the visitors of the park and the laughter of children.
The park is in fact a machine to keep Winters immortalized as the boogeyman
Nice to see you still being great!
My thoughts exactly.💭🧸🍾🍷

He's not so tough when you have a shotgun.
a mom will never think about her child like that
sure they will, PPD is not uncommon.
Lorraine would be a great killer in dead by daylight
Her whole gimmick could be having slabs in the basement that sacrifice survivors automatically after like a minute or two when they’re placed upon them and not rescued within the time limit
Her weapon is obviously an icepick and her personal ability makes nearby survivors scream or something
She could be called the bogeyman
And she could have like a scarecrow motif
Another idea for her ability would grabbing people somehow slowing them down and bringing them towards her similar to death slinger but a little bit of cenobite mixed in
This feels like an even darker version of the Babadook. I love it
The ending being left ambiguous is an excellent statement, because it truly doesn't matter whether or not the factors were Supernatural. At the end of the day, there's a child gone, a mother grieving, and anyone who hears the story will form their own opinions in lieu of facts.
WOW this is old. I think this is one of the first videos I saw from Markiplier

Lorraine is a character i can't be sympathetic towards, she's resentful towards her son, who is the ONLY remaining memory of her husband.
