Making an early Edwardian corset

  • Hi everyone!
    Welcome to a new project. I am making a new set of early Edwardian undergarments. I have decided to make a new corset and a set of combinations, aiming to place them around 1899-1903. I particularly like this period as the 'pigeon breast' wasn't at its highest yet. My end goal is to make a half-mourning dress, inspired by this time period.
    I have an inspiration Pinterest board here: www.pinterest....
    And here is the link of the pattern I purchased: www.etsy.com/u...
    This pattern is based on an extant corset in Atelier Sylphe's collection. The original is made of one layer of fabric, with only one metal bone, which makes it quite lightweight. However, I flatlined my pale yellow cotton sateen with coutil. I really enjoyed working with this corset, I think the shape is absolutely phenomenal, even without tight lacing. I believe with some padding, it will absolutely give me the silhouette I am after.
    Here are some good resources for corsetry supplies:
    www.venacavade...
    www.sewcurvy.com
    Here is the busk tutorial I mentioned: www.sewcurvy.c...
    Stay tuned for a video about making the combinations!

    when you used fabric clips to help keep the coutille tense over the busk as you sew, i had to step back and blink. its quite ingenious! and yes, that little funny flap below the busk is indeed used for garter clips. the resulting corset is positively darling as well, and id adore it if you were to show us its future ensemble. lovely work!!!!!

    Wow, turned out beautifully! I love the silhouette of this period, but it also terrifies me to attempt creating it...

      Sorry couldn't help it, by most of those inspiration pictures are edited. Also they used a lot of padding in the bust and hips to make the waist look smaller than it actually is. Karolina Zebrowska has a good video on how they edited pictures in the earlier days. After you see the editing there, you can see it everywhere...th-cam.com/video/ZXbcPgfiB0Q/w-d-xo.html

    You did an amazing job Cat!!
    Sewing a similar S bend Atelier Sylphe pattern. The shapes of the panels look so familiar even from sewing, picking and then unpicking the seams many times! - panels # 4 & 5 & the hip gores are especially challenging to get just right even with basting. This is not a corset for beginners, too many curves and the hip gores to contend with. A corset pattern with straight lines is far easier and less stressful if you want to start sewing corsets!!

    I'm going to need to make an early Edwardian corset soon. I just have a chemise so far, I'll probably have combinations done soon. I think I'm going to just go for it and do full-on pigeon breast. I like this pattern a lot, but I'd have to grade it up a lot and I'm not that experienced. Having videos is very helpful when trying to learn, so thank you!

      I completely understand! I picked this pattern because the extant corset had a similar waist measurement so I could avoid having to change it much. I would recommend checking out Truly Victorian and Redthreaded as they both have great corset patterns!

      @serendipidus1 It refers to that floppy shape in general, but of course you need something to create the shape. In my case I ended up putting ruffles on my corset cover, but I've seen an extant garment with some ruffles inside the bodice.

    I too am often betrayed by my bobbin thread. I have a machine that requires manual oiling of the bobbin hook, it's a battle between enough oil and too much. 😭

    • @nicolelcedergren2938
      @nicolelcedergren2938 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can relate. The subtle and unmistakable chatter/ tinkle of the bobbin as it drops back in the bobbin housing as you're happen to be in the middle of sewing a seam... And you know it's just your upper thread that's complying like a faithful, obedient dog while the bobbin is being feline! Yes! That fine balance between just the right amount of oil!

    beautiful! are the channels on the outside of the corset just decorational or do they have boning in them? If they do have boning in them, how does it work in the places they intersect with the straight bones where the casing is sewn on insde? Looking at similar patterns from symington database so no instructions of course, just trying to figure out how to execute certain aspects

    could you please show the finished corset in a short video from all angles and in movement, please?
    I would like to sew a corset myself, but I'm not sure yet, I like the silouett of this particular one. From the front and back it's gorgeous, but I would like to see it from other angles as well.

    Hi! This is super super helpful in understanding the mechanics of it! I need a corset to go with my prom dress (I'm making 2015 Cinderella's dress), and i was wondering if this actually cinches your waist? I'm looking for something that does a little bit and I'm wondering if this pattern is any good for that purpose? Thank you!

    • @CatsCostumery
      @CatsCostumery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Cinching in the waist depends a lot on your body shape! I've found I'm a bit squishy but not too much, so I don't get a lot of reduction with this corset (about 1'' to 2'', comfortably). I will warn though that if you want to wear a corset comfortably that does reduce your waist, it is very very important to wear it in and make sure you become used to it before wearing it for a longer period of time.

    • @charlottecomeau1266
      @charlottecomeau1266 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CatsCostumery thank you! That's pretty much all i want, my waist is naturally ~28 inches but I'd like to be closer to 26 for the ball haha. I definitely will get used to it before wearing it though

    shame at the end where you show the photos of it finsihed there is an annoying pop up video advert thing covering half of the left picture might have ben better if you had, done a twirl around demonstration at the end, rather than a still photo that isn't on very long that we can only partly see, good work though.
