Abenaki Warriors vs. New England Puritans : The Ballad Of Hannah Duston - Volume 1

- March 15, 1697 Haverhill, MA. Thomas Duston is busy at work on a hilltop just a half mile from his home, he is laboring away on the new house he is building for his ever growing family. Just six days prior, Thomas and his wife Hannah welcomed Martha to the clan, their twelfth child, and the ninth that had yet survived.
The Duston family were Puritan’s, a sect of the Church of England that sought to reform the church and dispel the Roman Catholic influence it was increasingly adopting. In the events leading up to the viciously bloody English Civil War, the Puritans endeavored to form their own colony, where they would be free to practice their faith far away from the ruling eye of King Charles and the Bishops.
From 1629 through 1640, over 21,000 Puritans migrated to New England, forming the Massachusetts Bay colony. While their arrival in this new world brought the religious freedom they desired, they had placed themselves in a very precarious position, face to face with the decentralized network of indigenous tribes that populated the northeast .
Adding to this clash of cultures was the leader of New France, just to the north in Quebec. Governor Frontenac instituted policies during King WIlliam’s War that rewarded the killing, capturing and enslavement of the Puritans, all in the service of securing the fertile lands of North America for the French Empire, and its Sun King, Louis XIV.
Caught up in the throes of this developing saga for control of North America, Thomas Duston found himself in the unenviable position of facing down a raiding party of Abenaki Warriors. With a band of bloodthirsty tribesmen zeroing in on his homestead, he must think fast, and attempt to deliver his family from the fires of this oncoming foe.
The story that follows would become the stuff of legend, a tall-tale that needs no exageration, it plays like a colonial version of “Kill Bill”, and the revenge delivered up is served as cold as the late New England winter where it takes place…

Another great story, thanks from South Wales, United Kingdom
Hey- I like that dude from your country - that Josey Wales. Yeah good movie 🎉
@@bold810 one of my favourites actually
Being a direct decent of Hannah and Tomas, I just wanted to say thank you.
Did you play Puritans vs Indians as a kid?
@@The_ZeroLineI did and guess who always won…not the red man
I have heard about 50 different versions of this story. There are many people who believe that she is a mass murderer, I am not one of them. Put bluntly; if you harm a child any child… John Wick ain’t got shit on me or Grandma.
@@igotfriendsinlowplaces2971 Well, duh.

19/20 Americans have no idea how rough life was. Be thankful for what we have!
whats even crazier imo is that this 'rough life' wasnt to far long ago. in the books of history we are really only a the chapter ahead of these times. beautiful
No disrespect but I wouldn't sale short all us Americans on knowing our history! My family & children certainly do & I know plenty of others , we appreciate what our forefathers sacrificed for us!
We are very spoiled we've never put anything on the line for our safety as a whole
19/20 millenials maybe.
19/20 “Americans” had no ancestors here at the time.
I absolutely love learning about the Kings Philips War/King Williams war era. Thank you.
Amazing story. Thank you. Hope to hear the rest of this story soon
Hannah rightly gets a ton of credit/recognition, but Thomas is a hero too. Did literally all he could do to save as many members of his family as possible.
HOKC, your stories are a regular staple to my dog's diet. We both enjoy your channel. Thank you!
Always top tier storytelling, ever story speaks to the human spirit. Thank you!
Thanks for listening!!
Great episode, sir! ❤❤❤ #HOKC
Just came across this painting in the thumbnail recently and I’m glad to have found this to learn about the historical context. So tragic. Such a visceral painting, it says so much without the need for words.
Yet another captivating story ❤
Loved this episode ❤ thank you 💛
Excellent as always 👏👏👏
Enjoyed that . 🤝🇮🇪
Jesus christ what a horrible decision to have to make. What a homage you are doing to a man that deserves to be remembered.
French-Canadians usually went on most raids with Natives into New-England in the 1600s
I knew there was a reason i didn't like French Canadians
True. French Canadians were held in New England when caught as well. Most of the time they were convicted of r*pe and murder. French Canadians had an affinity for prepubescent girls.
Great story telling! I just wish the videos were longer so you could tell the whole thing.
Yes the content is really good , but it's hard to settle in and enjoy it 13 minutes at a time...
This was only part 1
It is free content, well done content. I can wait a bit. I have the patience God gave a piss and my grandpa always said. If I can wait patiently, you can too.
@HistoricallyRomantic I know, that's the problem, I wish it wasn't in parts. Like @-PanzerRabbit- said "it's hard to settle in and really enjoy when its only 13 minutes at a time"
Storytime🤩🤩
but the modern historians tell us that the Natives were always peaceful and that the Europeans would never have survived without the Natives help.
The natives help bit has a little bit of validity but only a little. The rest is bs
No one is innocent here. The Puritan colony had long had a 25 pound bounty on NA scalps and the tribes began demanding payment for injuries real and perceived. And it’s impossible to justify infanticide by either Dustin or the Abenaki.
I'm white/Europen so I'm on that team. It's a bad situation all around
@@deanamodeo4072So am I, but I am on no team. It’s just history. People doing what they did and have always done. The Native Americans operated by the rule of the survival of the fittest and it’s why it’s an insult to them to portray them as naive children who were tricked out of all their land. All that horrible treatment only occurred once they had become too weak to fight back and were at the mercy of state and federal forces.
@@deanamodeo4072"team"?
How very American
The fight between Natives and Europeans generally leaves me feeling a bit ambivalent. The strongest will win, that's human nature. But a story of bravery, regardless of the player's appearance, moves me.
Natives? No. They murdered the tribes that occupied that land before they came and attempted genocide on them. Calling them natives is wrong
@@igotfriendsinlowplaces2971 Eh, semantics. If they beat the people who were there first then they get to write the history. That's how the world works, regardless of later generations' view of things. The best that can be done, after the fact, is to remember and acknowledge those people.
@@igotfriendsinlowplaces2971they sre literally natives.
@@kennybachman35 youre ignorant of their history. Plain and simple.
Years ago, I was teaching in the South and met a teacher from Connecticut. When she learned I was from Vermont, she asked if I knew who Hannah Dustin was. "Of course," I said, "we grew up on that story and that of Susannah Johnson." She told me a funny story of her son who was one of those bright and lively boys who drive teachers crazy, always having something to add to every comment. The son's teacher called her and said this had to stop. That day, she was telling them about Hannah Dustin and the boy had raised his hand and announced that he was a descendant of Hannah. My new friend told her gently that it was true, but she would advise her son to tone down his class participation.
Oh Come on.!! Teasing me like that.. Okay.. I'll be a waitin
While I know the ending to the story, I look forward to you tell the story.
What is the name of your background song sir?
10/10 love the voices
This happened to mu ancestors in cape elizabeth maine. On spurwink farm. Killed the 2 oldest men, then enslaved the rest.
The Indian who asks her “what need have you trouble yourself” when they pray gave me a Judge Holden from Blood Meridian vibe. Very profound, even if negative, words for an unlearned man of the land.
Dang shaggy gog!
watch this story from Atun Shei he explains how the story was shapped thru history and how it most likley actually happened
I keep a tomahawk by my bed
Suddenly I don’t feel so sorry for natives.
You did before?
Oh
Come on finish the story
Bring back Columbus Day...lol
Oh no they didn't 😮
Hav-rill with a long a.
Being from SE MA originally myself I don't think I would have known where he was talking about without the map. I would phonetically say Hay-ver-ill, not Have-her-hill. Not being critical of the pronunciation, just amused...great story...
What did thomas do to deserve this
It’s pronounced heyverill
I had the Natives 6 1/2 points over the New England Puritans on my 16- Bracket. 😐
You may dislike it. But this woman was just a mass murdererer, killing in revenge for minor reasons...
The people she killed bashed her infant daughter against a tree to death do you call that minor reasons?
@@theothompsonhart1698 is this just a story from herself... nobody had seen this kind of killing
Nice try, troll face...
Nice try, trollface...
Minor? The murder of an infant, not knowing if your family is alive or dead. Put your self in her place.
