  • Mandolin Orange are a band of extremes. Musically, the North Carolina duo produce music that is pure and calming. Lyrically, their topics take a stand on human rights, environment and other pieces plucked from today's news. Andrew Marlin (guitar) met Emily Frantz (fiddle) in 2009 at a bluegrass jam in Durham, NC. Andrew had played guitar since he was fourteen, Emily has been in various bluegass bands around North Carolina. The duo came to Alternate Root TV studios in Boston in May to record The Extended Play Sessions.
    Mandolin Orange added players for 'This Side of Jordan,' their label debut album for North Carolina based Yep Roc records. The album was recorded at the Fideltorium in Kernersville, North Carolina with bassist Jeff Crawford and a backing band, Religious faith and fable thread throughout the record with Biblical references that Emily Frantz sees as a way to "convey a different point. In the south especially, we hear the Bible construed in any and every way to justify people's comforts and discomforts. Here band mate, and group lyricist , Andrew Marlin added, "and it's so frustrating to watch those stories be used to limit people's happiness." This sentiment inspired "Hey Adam," where Marlin and Frantz urge in unison during the chorus, "Our Father loves you all ways."

    I have followed these young people for soooo long. They constantly challenge me too new ideas and stirring melodies. I doubt I’ll be around to see their career reach it’s pinnacle (I’m 80 now) but I love what they’re doing today.

    This really does show me how different my worldview is from theirs-though I don’t listen to their music for anything Christian etc, it is still interesting how much I can disagree with them and still listen. In my opinion it doesn’t get in the way of their music, perhaps only because I love their music so much.

    Here’s the issue I see. Marriage has a religious connotation to it. They should have just called gay marriage as a civil union or something and few people would have cared. Look at Idaho when a preacher got sued for not wanting to preside over two gay people getting married. Like sure love is love and whoever wants to be sexually engaged with another adult should be allowed to do so.
    What irks me is the hypocrisy of the lgbtq community. 75% of the gay people I talked to told me they didn’t believe that polygamy deserved equal rights as gay marriage. Like here’s gay people saying they deserve the same treatment as heterosexuals but then in the same breath saying they’re better then others. Like the the US Supreme Court judge said it right in the gay marriage court case when he said gay marriage is essentially opening the door to let any consenting adults get married. If four lawyers wanted to get married together then those four people should be allowed to get married. That’s what irks me. Gay marriage should be legal, but so shouldn’t polygamy, polyamory, bigamy, etc. everything should be legal as long as it’s between consenting adults. The hypocrisy of the US and the lgbtq community is just shocking.

  • @koltoncrane3099
    @koltoncrane3099 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Think of it this way. Few people today would care if the president of the US had a gay marriage. But imagine if the president of the US had ten wives people would lose their shit or marbles and go nuts. Socially and politically gay marriage is promoted the crap out of and all other forms of love is spat on.

    • @ronbrown2016

      So all of the music from the 60 and 70s are garbage. A political moment has shaped most of music we listen to......at least the music worth listening to.

    For this reason shall a man leave his mother and his father and CLEAVE ONLY unto his WIFE. So... if folks want to call the other thing "Marriage". Then maybe we should just call the biblical union "CLEAVAGE" ???
