If Edu wants to move to a CEO type role, maybe his move (that you say is a downgrade) is to increase his skills in the areas he is deficient in that disqualify him from that sort of role at a large premier league club like Arsenal. It is differently focused to being a Sorting Director/Director of Football, as it will be much more focused on the commercial side of the club. Could be a smart move for him, exposing him to those sort of situations across multiple club environments, if that is what he ultimately wants. Just seeing it as big club/group of smaller clubs is bit narrow minded, and not dis-similar to the player as career/job vs. the fan loyalty perspective. He's not gone to a major rival (unless you consider Forest that!!!) Good luck to the guy.
People like you really can't think in an unbiased, logical way. They haven't just become a bad team overnight lol, that doesn't happen. Deep down everyone knows once ødegaard returns for them, they'll look completely different, unfortunately for rival fans.
We see these blips with Arteta a lot. It’s not always recognised as a disaster when the level of performance drops because Arsenal are the size they are (in recent years under this iteration). I think sometimes Arteta struggles with managing his firm footballing principles and striving to innovate and improve his side to finally get the better of city. Currently, you’ve had a stable CB pairing who are a stone’s throw from warming up to their normal level I feel (natural for the turbulent start of a season (I’d live to see clean sheet stats in the premier league in the 1st half va the 2nd half of seasons - I feel rhythm plays a huge part in that). The Arsenal full-backs have been seriously lacking in fitness and it doesn’t get airtime because the depth is so comprehensive (Zinchenko/Kiwior (not of the level) and Timber/White/Calafiori (only played in around 5 games each as a result of fitness). That doesn’t help. He hasn’t learned from the post-Xhaka experimentation that went to dastardly wrong with Kai, and now we have a player in Merino who is not quite there. As a bigger problem, I think the speculation around Partey (injuries/controversy/age/form/potential buyers (Italy and Dubai)) has really disrupted the midfield. We did see a world where Rice and Partey can play in the same midfield (behind the very creative Odegaard). However, I don’t think that (2 yrs ago) Arteta ever thought Partey would still be here, and moreover be a better player than Rice (just in that 6 position arguably). Rice is Arsenal’s 6 for the future. But u remove Martin and have a double 6 pivot and the team - as your man from the chronicles said - is too physical and too press resistant and comfortable as opposed to expansive and spellbinding. You add to this that Trossard has been filling in in that 10, and Martinelli continues his run of form (characterised by defensive work rate and stretching the pitch) without goals, and you see how badly Arsenal are lacking threat. So, to finish with the midfield, you could say that Chelsea’s midfield, without Palmer, wouldn’t work from a balance point of view, as Lavia and Caicedo represent that Rice and Partey duo but have their usual wizard in front of them. Trossard and Havertz playing playing deeper has exacerbated the tactical issue. This is the point on innovation. Arteta is sometimes so determined to maintain a starting XI of merit, that he changes the individual roles of every player to compensate for say the absence of our captain, rather than throwing one average cog into the machine and hoping it doesn’t get found out. I think this is because his recruitment style is designed to bring in all-encompassing types of players who are adaptive, and he can hide behind his tweaks rather than being criticised for throwing players (like Zinchenko/Kiwior/Smith-Rowe/Vieira/Nwaneri/Nelson/Sterling/Nketiah) who he doesn’t want around into the footballing fray. In reality, the mess Arsenal are in has required the involvement of some of those players who remain. Saka is compensating for the lack of creativity, which means that while the team is in a cold and injury prone phase it calls for games to be won on fine margins rather than probability. We should be going into every game at the moment at a hungry and determined 80%, not at a messy and half-fit 85%. The striker position speaks for itself. Kai has done a brilliant job, but as as football fans know all well that there are 10 strikers at any given time in world football who can win you a domestic title, and they can carry you through all of the above issues. Our xG is terrible right now. Expect a team, as we saw slightly at Inter, who once again for the whole encounter at Stamford bridge will seem in internal cknfcilt with itself - stemming from Arteta - over whether to win this game in a disciplined 1-0 fashion, or throw the kitchen sink for a 3-1. Every game this season has looked like, because we’re not starting games as well as were last season, we’re unsure how the game will play out because we’re conscious that we’re still a team that looks like it is in pres season and is seriously lacking firepower relative to our high bar of quality. Expect a 2-1 Arsenal win, but Chelskea, led by someone I once called Enzo Ma’yes’ca (for how it looked like he a couch made docile by the tyrannical rule of a historical club) are now flying. The full-back issue has been addressed - the problem that Spurs have had throughout their entire history, and with that balanced midfield you really do give the licence for your top performers to go and express themselves. It is lovely to see a team play with such confidence and determination - and in a non-tribal way I have missed the Chelsea of old. Welcome back to the first closely-contested Blue-red London derby since the days of Conte and Wenger, and let us see who wins, the blues with expression and passion, or the reds with precision and desperation. Should be a blockbuster. The 2-2 score of last season looks very likely indeed, as I expect a lot from Chelsea, and I think Arsenal will need the time off during the break to fully manage a reset.
