The paradiddlediddle was always one of my favorites. Easy to get up to speed, lots of practical applications. One of the 10 or so rudiments worth remembering.

I like how humble you are bro haha! The fact that your pulling off all the stuff that these great drummers are doing is insane. Its a talent in itself you can even break down half of these! Seriously though bro great lesson.

I agree with this. Doing it is one thing. Being able to break down what the greats are doing and then doing it yourself it next level. Very well done.

I'd like to add that what makes Keith Carlock so great at using this rudiment in his playing, apart from his improvisational genius and phrasing, are his tone, articulation and dynamics. This is evident in the very first segment of this video. Keith is almost always striking the same part of the drum every time, and his doubles are dead even with no pulsation from left hand to right. This makes his rolls silky smooth. He also brings out his accents in prominent fashion so that the emphasis of his phrases are essentially the accents and not the double stroke rolls. The coolest thing by far, in my opinion, is how Keith is able to build and release tension in his rolls with dynamics and well-timed cymbal crashes.

Met him at the 55 bar a few years ago. He was playing with James Genus on bass and Wayne Krantz on guitar (I hope I spelled the name right!)
Carlock told me that he is actively trying to channel a straight up funky feeling in what he does. I think this is part of why his fills and overall technique are so strong. He plays a lot without getting in the way of the other players. Very hard to do. He is an amazing drummer. Good teaching video btw.

So funny because I was just showing someone that Vic Firth video. I got to stand right by his high hat at the 55 bar in NYC several years ago with Wayne Krantz and James Genus. It was raw fusion in every sense of that word. Afterwards I spoke to him. He said that he's always trying to channel that THUMP in what he does. It's like the doubles (diddles) are all connected to that thing too. I will never forget that night because the whole group was KILLING it.

Austin you are flippin' amazing. To break down what others are doing in steps and re-teach is a great skill in itself. I've admired Kieth Carlock for awhile and often refer to the Vic Firth clip to say to my drummer friends, "Yeah, but have you seen this?" I wrote to Kieth awhile back explaining that I had no Idea what he was doing but I was blown away, etc. He was very cool to get back to me with a simple 'thanks!'.

Nice playing and definitely not just jazz fusion as I can't remember the pattern off the top of my head but I remember Randy Castillo using paradiddles to great effect on one of the Lita Ford albums. The fill starts the song and it is really nice. It might even be double paradiddles. The point is a good fill is great to have for when you need it
