    Vulcanizing is a chemical process done on latex; it's how natural rubber is made. What you're doing is not vulcanizing, but plastic welding. TPU is a thermoplastic. There's actually TPU filament for 3D printing.

    I know is not vulcanizing but it doesn’t matter what it’s called., Im thank full you shared this video and I have learned something new

    Love that stuff. I used a lot of it in a mail factory on graveyard shift. No night time mechanic so when a machine broke down we had to try and get it back up ourselves. We used to have these hinged aluminum sleeves the same diameter as the tubing. Then we didnt have to cut away as much mushroom. Worked like a charm.

    I would like you know why you call this vulcanizing? vulcanizing is the curing of rubber. this isn't that.

      Maybe you are wright.

      Vulcanizing is cross-linking of rubbers by heat and/or chemical processes. Silicone rubber, sometimes called RTV, where RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing. Heat only can be used as shown in this video. Cold (room temp) vulcanizing patches are also used for repairing inner tube punctures.

      @@RichardFallstich The material shown is not a vulcanised rubber, it's a thermoplastic elastomer, so what Russ Gries (rwg42985) is doing is that he's welding two ends together by melting them.

    • @wwindsunrain
      @wwindsunrain 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichardFallstich I'm not sure that's correct. I was under the impression that when a thermoplastic melts, it's not the polymer crosslinks that break, but the van der waals forces. It's a physical process, whereas vulcanization of rubber is a chemical process.

    I've used that same material to fix some of our machines at work. I've also did some actual vulcanizing back in the day at a tire shop. Really sorry to see so many folks bashing your efforts,but I thought it was a cool video. I can see your invention vision and what it could accomplish. Interesting idea.

    This is not vulcanizing.

    • @howto_ua
      @howto_ua  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why do you think so?

    • @tartredarrow
      @tartredarrow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1) Vulcanized rubber doesn't melt, it burns
      2) Vulcanized rubber holds it's shape, like a tire or a radiator hose
      3) Vulcanizing is done with chemicals under pressure.
      You are demonstrating thermoplastic melt/freeze of a synthetic polymer. It's a completely different process.

      @@howto_ua He's perfectly correct. What you are doing is nothing to do with vulcanization at all.

    Awesome video, bro. If I wanted to puncture/cut a slit in a tennis ball so that I could shove other bits of a second tennis ball into the first tennis ball, do you think that I could then melt the punctured seam of the tennis ball back together by heating it up like you did? If so, is there anything I should know before trying it?

    Interesting to see the technique for heat-joining urethane O-belt. BUT the term 'Vulcanizing' actually means something entirely different. It refers to the process of using sulfur to form cross-bonds between the carbon chains of latex rubber, to form tough durable cured rubber, like in tires. Google it. I'm curious to know where you picked up such a misuse of the word, why you didn't check it, and why over a year later (despite being told) you still didn't fix the title. Nothing to do with clickbaiting, surely?
