  • Hello friends, in this video we have talked about Car Chassis.
    Chassis is a load bearing framework of any car.
    All passenger cars are based upon mainly 2 types of Chassis which are Unibody, and Body on Frame.
    Unibody means Unitized body. In this chassis architecture there is no separate frame and body. Floorpan, side pillars and roofline of the car is welded together into a single unit. This unit becomes a cage like structure on which body panels and other car components are attached to make a complete car.
    Unibody chassis is also called Monocoque chassis.
    The structural integrity of the Unibody or Monocoque chassis is very strong.
    Unibody or Monocoque chassis is used in all the Hatchbacks, Sedans and even in Light Trucks.
    Unibody or Monocoque chassis is lighter as compared to Body on frame chassis, hence greater fuel economy, greater acceleration, greater handling, and pretty much greater everything.
    On the other hand Body-on-Frame as the name suggest is a frame support below car body. In Body on frame chassis, car's body is mounted on a separate chassis.
    Body on frame chassis is built by 2 high strength metal rails which are joint together by lateral support bars. Such structure is look pretty much like a ladder, that's why body on frame chassis is also called Ladder frame.
    In this structure, all the stresses of the vehicle is borne by the metal bars and not the body.
    That's why the Ladder frame is very heavy as compared to Monocoque chassis.
    Advantage of this chassis structure is that it is very simple structure, hence easy and economical to repair. And ground clearance in Ladder frame or Body on frame cars are always high, therefore these vehicles are suitable for off-roading. NVH is also on the lower side in these vehicle as the body and chassis is separate.
    Ladder frame or Body on frame chassis is used in full sized SUVs, Pickup Trucks and full sized trucks.
