I taught a self-contained fifth-grade classroom my first year of teaching and my second year moved to teaching fifth and six math science and social studies, and I’m certified through eighth! I absolutely love it! I will say I feel like it is more prep for me on the front end then when I taught ELA along with everything else, but on the back end it is less work.
I will keep brainstorming what tips I have, but I think my major one is to try to make whatever you can come to life a little more! I try to have my students view history as a story and try to put themselves in the shoes of the people they are studying as much as possible, and they love it! Focusing on the people living through events and not just historical events themselves definitely makes a difference especially for this age group.

    soooo excited for you.
I am a math teaching fellow so I do small group math instruction for 6th to 8th grade. Middle schoolers have such big personalities. I mean tons of growing, lots of fun, super nostalgic, and don’t forget about their little attitudes! Love middle school and sooooo excited for you as well as seeing you transition BECAUSE I AM TRANSITIONING TO A FULL TIME 5-8 teacher next school year!

I am about to wrap up my 25th year of teaching middle school. I currently teach 7th grade social studies and absolutely love it. It definitely takes a special person to teach middle school. My advice would be to start strict…you can always lighten up later in the year, but it’s hard to go the other way around. I can wait to see where this road leads you! Congrats on your new position!

soo excited for you!! also its crazy how similar we are. I am in north georgia as well and student taught in fifth, my favorite thing to teach was social studies and i never saw myself wanting to teach middle or high until i was in fifth and i would love to gace up eventually and also just teach social studies! cheer coaching has also been something i’ve always been interested in too so i hope you share more about that next year!

Congrats! I’m a 2nd year middle school teacher and I love middle school. They not only drive me crazy, but are so much fun. The relationships you build are amazing to me! You need just as many routines and expectations as you would in elementary. They need to know how you want them to do everything. I suggest start strict and consistent and you can always ease up later on. They need to know there are consequences for their choices.

Congratulations! I started college as an elementary major, but after a couple years switched to middle grades bc I realized that I loved science and didn't want to teach all the other subjects. I was nervous about teaching older kids, but doing some subbing in elementary schools confirmed that elementary was not for me.
I haven't been able to find many middle school teachers on TH-cam, so I'm excited to see how your journey unfolds! Best wishes!

I taught middle school social studies for a few years before teaching elementary.
Behavior management: middle schoolers pick up on consistency better than even the little ones. Keep your word. If a student is misbehaving, (most times) calling them out in front of the class CAN result in lack of respect and a possible argument. Building relationships, attending their activities, having good rapport, keeping consistency, joking with them, being transparent about your expectations, and protecting student dignity will take you far. Don't be afraid to admit when you're wrong or don't know something but work to make things right. However, if you say you will find an answer, keep your word.
Parent communication/grades: At least in my district, middle school parents aren't as involved as they were when their kids were in elementary. Most still appreciate communication about their child's academic and behavior progress. I would try to send home a progress report every few weeks to keep them updated on their child's academics (especially since some parents don't have good internet access or know how to check their child's grades). Weekly, I sent an email to each child's family of their missing assignments from that week that would count as a zero in the gradebook if they weren't turned in by the following Friday. ALSO, at the beginning of every school year, I taught kids to log on to the student portal to check their grades. Then they had no excuse about knowing their current grades in class.
Curriculum: Finding good social studies resources is DIFFICULT. Of course, use what your school provides you, but if you need something more from TPT, my favorite middle school social studies sellers are History Gal and History with Mr. E. Learning gaps are also a lot bigger in middle school, so it's important to find appropriate-level texts. Readworks has some good social studies articles you can use to differentiate! Social Studies is not just about facts. Make it into a story. Focus on themes and patterns throughout history of various people groups. What made them successful? What caused their downfall? What motivated them? You can easily practice/integrate those reading and writing standards!
There aren't a ton of consequences you can give students (especially since they no longer have recess). Be careful about sending students to detention and the office. By 7th/8th grade, the ones who struggle with behavior in school are used to those. But if you feel like they are affecting the safety of the class, send them. Restorative justice practices and natural consequences are a good idea! Also, maybe you could find a way to have a Fun Friday one class period every month or few months for academic/behavior motivation.
Phone policies....ask your school/other middle school teachers in your building about theirs. My school did not allow phones out unless it was lunch. If they were caught with one out in class, we had to call our secretary and let her know the student was on their way to the office with it (they could pick it up after school). The second time, they had to do the same thing but their parent had to come in to get their phone.
Maybe try Nearpod with them! That's one website I wish I would have tried with my middle schoolers.
P.S. School dances are a hoot to chaperone :)

@@ramloali9913 yeah I didn’t say any middle names cause maybe she might want to go back to elementary or try high school. To prevent constant name changes it’s best to keep elem, middle or high out.

I am training to be a social studies/ History teacher for 7-12. My training has been so amazing. I think that it was a better fit for you. Most junior high kids are really good kids as long as you try to understand them on a personal level you should be fine.
