She was so "on" that entire evening! With her accompanist, Martin Katz conducting, Marilyn had something special during that performance!

It doesn't get any better than this does it. What an amazing voice

All the recordings of Mrs Horne are so useful for my teaching to illustrate what very bad singing is!!! They show perfectly what masky, nasal, muffled and over-covered singing is… the opposite of free, healthy and good voice production.

To Kasha1932: I am one of those in the camp of those who think she is the greatest Mezzo ever! As far as this aria needing tenderness, you have to remember that she is a he in the opera and he is desparate as to what he will do without his Euridice. Also, she is probably thinking that her voice needs to be stronger to sound more masculine as a counter-tenor might. Thanks for the post!

I think more of a contralto would be more like it.

Sorry, but I believe I said something like ,"whom do we have today who can come close to Kathleen Ferrier and Dame Janet Baker?".Well...here she is...THE FINEST MEZZO SOPRANO in the world according to some. I do love "Jackie" very much, but the only negative thing I've ever said about her is that I like this very tender aria sung a bit more slowly...considering that she is
singing about the death of a beloved...just MHO,Jackie. Thank you so very much...all who contibuted to this posting.

Nathalie Stutzmann, Ferrier also and Janet Baker are my favourites. I like Horne but the tempo was not slow enough.

ma che sono questi staccati??? le frasi devono essere legate e il tempo (non è certo colpa della Horne ma di quella specie di direttore)

Yesterday while surfing the web I came across a Horne performance of this aria but the French version the Berlioz version?)
The tempo was very fast almost superficial and it was conducted by Henry Lewis. This version is more nuanced but veers radically between tempi. I wonder when this was recorded as the vibrations are becoming loose. I would opt for her complete performance con-
ducted by Solti even though the conductor picks and chooses from the various versions. Horne is in prime voice and is more successful in conveying Orfeo's great lament.

Schrecklich gesungen. Viel zu schnell und temperamentvoll. Marilyn Horne ist wundervoll in anderen Arien. Aber bei diesem Stück höre ich Jane Baker lieber.
